The lyrics are mega important for Sober. It's a masterclass in performance art, and plays really well into the lyrics and intention of the song. Absolute monster performance.

Many have said Maynard’s posture was completely anathema to singing well, but obviously he did. But no one else has said they expected such a physical performance from him, so, that’s good foresight. I think this shows he is just such a total performer that he can nearly be an actor onstage.

I'd argue his posture elevated his voice and singing in this particular song, and resulted in a better song than if he were to sing it with proper posture, because at the end of the day songs convey emotion, and with the topic of the song; addiction, sobriety and the pain accompanying, the posture helps him convey perfectly that raw emotion.

I don’t disagree with that. I was only referring to numerous vocal coaches who pointed out his posture should have hampered his singing. Personally, I would prefer this stance over some type of posture that adhered to the standard rules.

I've seen Tool over twenty times...I really miss Maynard being out front like this...he was so mesmerizing. But I guess that's the point of singing in the shadows...it forces you to focus on the band as a single entity as opposed to a group of individuals. Still miss those stares, though...

It's not easy to find good quality live videos of Tool. This live performance It's from 1993 if I'm not mistaken, with their first bassist Paul D'Amour, in 1995 he is replaced by Justin Chancellor. Their presence in live performances changed since this era. I had the opportunity to see them live 3 times, and it's my favorite band. And yes, listen to the studio version of this song. Tool have so many good songs it's difficult to make a suggestion, but try Lateralus, or Schism, Vicarious, The Pot, 7empest, just to name a few😉
Indeed, it is very hard to find older good copies of Tool live. Even some of the best bootlegs I have seen from the 90's of them, including the one I had were pretty bad

A good friend of mine while we were on a road trip wanted to stop at a music store, (remember those?) While browsing he say Tool's new album, Lateralus. He bought it. When back in my car he opened it and handed it to me. I said, oh, you want to listen to this one? He said, yes and no. Yes he wanted to listen to it but he bought it for me. He wasn't sure I would like it thanks to Tool's complex rhythms. I stuck it in the stereo and we jammed to it. Coming from some heavy music training in school I really appreciated the constantly changing rhythm structure in their music.

Maynard is so prolific, and you can see him do a gorgeous live version of Orestes with another of his bands, A Perfect Circle, if you try the version Stone and Echo live from Red Rocks.

Maynard really is a freak of nature.
3:00 - Well you can see everyone in the Pneuma drum cam as well. At the beginning Adam Jones (guitar) can be seen on the middle/top right and Justin Chansellro (bass) can be seen front left from Danny and Maynard is behind right to Danny. And can alos be seen walking behind him mid song and then he comes back at the end. :)
Also bass player here is Paul D'Amour, not Justin Chansellor.
But yeah, I know what you mean, just had to nitpick. ;)
Growing up i didn't have the lyrics to the songs and it was hard to understand, for tool its about feeling and then diving deeper into their music. lots of fun

There is a live version of “push it” and “third eye” that was released on their Salival album 💿 the live performance from the recording is on RUclips. Decent quality, it’s from 1998 show. If you search tool live in 98 you will most likely find it. I highly recommend it!! Also there is a live performance of “H” in 2002 in NY that’s awesome as well.
This is early Tool live in 1993 when they only had 1 EP ('Opiate') and 1 album ('Undertow')... and they were not very serious about their performances, since they had started as a 'joke band'... And this was the 90's... all the bands looked like grunge bands - they all dressed casually and looked like kids on the street... No one in 1993 wanted to see bands w/ big hair, costumes and makeup like most of the 80's bands... Tool still dresses casually on stage today, but their stage show is now an extravagant display of lasers, lights and visuals; they have come a long way since the 90's 😂
In fact, Maynard James Keenan (vocals) never sings in front of the stage like he did in the video... He's usually this figure standing behind the drums in the shadows, belting out his vocals while Adam Jones (guitar) and Justin Chancellor (bass) play up front w/ Danny Carey on drums... In this performance, the bassist was Paul D'Amour (who left the band around 1995).

The song is about addiction and the control it has over you. It says about wanting to start over again and the vicious cycle that it creates. Maynard James Keenan was in the group A Perfect Circle before Tool which was also a great rock band. He also is a song writer and record producer and wine maker. He is an astute businessman who has vineyards in Arizona. And believe it or not sometimes wearer's a suite and tie for business!
This performance is from the a early to mid 90's. Song is from thier 1st album undertow.

When I saw them he was wearing a pink freagn tutu and knee highs. I was high as hell and didn’t care because the music was great.
I had a bootleg VHS tape of Tool from '98 where Maynard was dressed like a televangelist with a bull horn and I have seen them live and he played the entire show without a light on him and his back turned to the crowd the entire show. Never know what you're gonna get from him live, just that its gonna sound good. This is a remastered rip of a very old VHS rip from a shitty copy in the first place

Damn, this was one of the first metal bands I've started listening in 1994. Tool, Metallica and Sepultura. But it was difficult to appreciate the lyrics without understanding the language lol.

To think this masterpiece isn’t even as deep as TooL digs into our souls, chews them up, shits them out and yet still they come out cleaner and more sober.

His friend is a rock star that couldn't be sober, couldn't perform sober. He made this song to show his friend that he understands to try and save his friend. Money wouldn't help and no one could force it so he reached out through art.
