At 74 I am a bare bones beginner. Your tips have really helped me to let go and just have fun. I was getting hung up on trying to learn how to sketch an image, color theory and mixing, painting techniques, etc., when all I really want to do is relax and have fun. Thank you.
Amen I totally agree. Let’s have fun and bring out our creativity. ❤❤❤. I am 73 years old and started 2 years ago and loving this so much and so surprised to see what I have created and so is my husband amazed. It is never too late.
I really needed to hear that. I'm older and retired and just getting started with art I tried many times in the past but gave up because I was trying to follow the rules. Some people are not meant to be teachers of art. You are a very inspiring person you have that natural ability to give people courage and inspire them. Thank you so much I'll keep watching.
Sooooooo spot on Krista!!! I'm 100% self taught in music & art, and as a guitarist, I get work playing what I actually love, not what the people want to hear as they try to preach. Likewise with art, there's a whole world out there, so many people with different interestes, you can't please them all, but you can please those who like what you also like. And for all those "nay" Sayers out there preaching what people want & judging your art I can say this, my wife & I survived 2 major hurricanes in 2 years down here in the Ft. Myers area, and all the artists down here really don't care about negative judgement, they just want to bring joy to everyone's life no matter what their skill is, beauty truly does lay in the eyes of the beholder, thanks for sharing this video, you are AWESOME!!! Keep On Creating, Rock On & God Bless.
I'm 36 and started my art journey during Covid, just picking up a sketchbook and a set of pencils for something to do at home. 5 years later I'm into charcoal, pastels, acrylics, pen and ink, I've even got a gel plate I like to experiment with. Exploring possibilities is what art is all about. You are truly beautiful btw and I love your videos 😁
Totally agree, I'm 77 and still being inspired by many people and their process. My biggest tip is relax and have fun, and definitely pay no attention to the critics and naysayers. They're usually frustrated because they are afraid of being criticized themselves.
I have aphantasia so I have no visual imagination, little hard to draw out of your head when you can’t visualise it. Yes there are some things I can make up once I start drawing but I love reference photos. Helps that I love photography so I can mostly use my own photos. I tried watching tutorials but I don’t find them great. I couldn’t draw faces then I found you and your style helped me start on them, I no longer do them in your style but before I found you I couldn’t do faces at all. So big thanks ❤
Thank you for this video, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you raised. I'm mostly self-taught and I get many positive comments on my pieces. I create art primarily for myself because it brings me joy and allows me to have meaningful moments. ❤
Aloha Kirsta, yay, bravo! Really love your sharing, tips and clear, calm passionate way of expressing your unique take on art and creativity. Yes I wholeheartedly agree, there is a bold creative spark in all of us, which can seem to be covered up by conventional education/teaching, but it can never be put out and is always ever ready to be reignited when we follow our natural Heart creative impulses. This applies to any type of creativity from painting, drawing, crafting, cooking , gardening, knitting, music, photography etc...Endless creative expressions. lol....Mainstream teaching/ education has its place, and for some it works, but not when individual expression is termed wrong, dismissed or not allowed. True art is the freedom of individual expression, in whichever genre and makes the artist Hearts sing, simply creating for the love and joy of it. Shine on beautiful. creatives. Thank you Kirsta.💯💛👏
Such wonderful advice! Your video on faces for beginners was the first time I ever drew a face. And now I can't stop! And yes, it's never too late to start. I've been working on my art since I was 65 and that was 10 years ago! Thank you for all your videos, which I am watching one by one since I discovered you recently.
Hi Krista, I can thank you enough for doing this video. It truly speaks to me and helps me out a lot. A couple of the things like “being born with a talent” and starting out later in life” has really been keeping me from doing my art. I have been struggling with these two myths about “talent born” and “age” for awhile now and it really depresses me. I am 53 and I think I am too old to start my art journey which has always been my passion. You are truly the best and again Thank you!
I am so happy to hear my video makes a difference!! You are not alone at alll❤️ I think if you have a desire to create art (at any age or stage of life) then create it with joy and have fun! Thank you! ✨✨✨
I just started water colouring a couple of months ago at 54 and now also have oil pastels, I’ve been playing with lots of styles and I’m sure eventually my own style will come out. I love drawing but hadn’t done any since I was about 15 so it was lovely to get back into it. Oh I’ve also ended up with acrylic markers, watercolour pencils, gel pens, pastel pencils 😱 I just bought stuff off Temu to get started with and some of it is actually great quality. Just have fun, no one else needs to even see it unless you want them to. 😁👍 Have fun, get messy and try everything until you find what you really enjoy, don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t do it. Art is for you not other people. ❤
@@Amanda-uc5jq I love this comment!! I think you have to try all the art supplies before you can decide what your favourites are. I’ve always wondered if Temu was worth it. Thanks so much for your comment and happy sketching! 🤗✨
I'm 62 and have been "arting" since my kids were little. We did nature journals then and I've just continued with various kinds of art. Now with the grandkids, I've been arting with them -- just having fun -- and they love it! I've been breaking the "realistic art" rule and lean into a more graphic, loose art. I do copy people's ideas sometimes, but put a little of my own spin on it. Question: Do you mostly sit at an easel to draw/paint? I've been struggling with some neck pain and I think it's from looking down when I sketch and paint. I noticed you use an easel. Any tips on easels? I'm going to tape a big piece of paper on my wall tonight and try sketching standing up.
Your art sounds like fun! I almost always stand when painting and drawing and usually it is in my kitchen, I also tape paper on the wall! I do that for painting and sketching. Usually I tape a roll of kraft paper first to protect my wall then I tape the paper on top because I have gotten paint on my walls. I also have a standing easel for canvas paintings. The little easel on my desk is specifically for online teaching so I can zoom right into the artwork and overall it looks better when I am doing a video. ❤️ Thank you so much for watching!
@@KristaIreneArt Thank you so much for responding to my question. So... I'm on track with taping paper to the wall! Yessss! I also decided to put some paper behind to protect my wall. I appreciate how REAL and practical you are. I'm also working on faces along with you. Thanks for that.
Hi again I guess I'm watching the videos out of order, but that's okay! I just wanted to say, Van Gogh has long been my favorite artist, but I came to his art through Doctor Who! There's a whole episode Doctor Who that is all about Vincent, and it's such an amazing homage to that amazing artist. Anyway I said that because I thought your cat picture behind you was giving off huge Van Gogh vibes which I REALLY dig, then I looked up a little, and there was the art of the great man himself! ❤ I just had to comment and tell you that I love that picture of the cats so much and that I share your love for Van Gogh and I'm also a big fan of yours nowadays, too! Looking forward to being able to share some of my stuff with you! Thanks for the beautiful videos!
100% agreed Krista ❤ this is so important, we need to demystify all these ideas that teachers and society imput us! I started my art journey in my thirties as self taught and all that matters to me is if I'm enjoying making art. P.S.- can I ask which mic do you use for your videos? I'm looking for options at the moment. 🙏
Thank you! The microphone I use in the video is not very good because every time I move it makes a noise, if I move my hands when I talk it makes a static noise it also cuts off at random times so I had to redo certain parts of the video. I will be getting a new one soon and will let you know what that is when I test it out but this one I would not recommend just due to all the issues I have with it. When I do my drawing videos I just talk into the phone closely and I avoid using my microphone.
If someone is just doing art for fun, they can throw out all the rules. Just have fun. If someone is trying to be an artist who sells their work, especially if they’re doing representative art, at some point they might want to learn basic art skills, like how to draw, how colors interact, composition, etc. Without basic skills, people are going to run into roadblocks translating their vision into reality. Artists who make a ton of money and break the rules still know the rules so they know how to break the rules in a way that seems intentional, not amateurish. The artists you mentioned are skilled artists with large followings so they broke the rules in a way that aligned with their style and their portfolio of work. An unknown artist wouldn’t get $1 for a taped banana on the wall. Art for art’s sake is a joy and everyone could benefit from it. However what professional artists do is not art for art’s sake; they’re professionals who have learned the skills needed to translate their vision into reality.
Trying to follow all the rules when learning art is exhausting. My video is for beginners who are getting into art and feeling stuck and defeated because of rules. Sometimes we have to just get started and have fun while trying to learn a new skill. ❤️
@@KristaIreneArt Agreed 100%. I think, for whatever it’s worth which isn’t much, that beginners should focus on finding their joy and doing all the things that make their souls sing.
hi. i think you are great. i am an older artist, who did not go to art school. i have been learning my art in a vacuum; through books and youtube only. you see, i am also chronically ill, so i never go out and i am stuck indside my house, alone. i do have a wonderful husband who cares for me but he is a man; kind of old school, if you get my meaning. not much talk. but he is fantastic in every other way. almost. hehe. so, i have been teaching myself lots of things, ending up now, as a mixed media artist. very loose painting and i combine all sorts of things. i am 66 now, and i desperately need help. i am not learning fast enough . i can't walk or see well or go anywhere, so i feel a bit stuck. can you advise me atall krista? beautiful videos, my friend. you are a lovely girl. i have a niece a lot like you. love from michele (south australia). ps: i just found you yesterday.

Hi! I honestly think that you are doing great, that is part of the process! Sometimes you go through a little phase of trying to use all the supplies, keep going and soon you will discover which supplies you like the most. There was a time when I put EVERYTHING on the paper and I would be so frustrated but I think that is a part of the process we all go through. Keep going, enjoy the process and most of all HAVE FUN!! ✨✨✨
I’ve just started and have ended up with watercolour, oil pastels, gouache, acrylic markers, gel pens, pastel pencils and someone is about to send me acrylic paints as well. I’ve found different things suit different moods, I love oil pastels when I’m cranky or upset as to me they don’t need the same delicate touch as watercolour. I love the acrylic markers when I just want to sit on the lounge and fiddle around with something other than drawing, I also use the markers to add some detail to oil pastels and sometimes watercolour paintings. I’ve now also started putting a watercolour wash down before using the oil pastels so I’m not worried about filling all the white. I bought pastel pencils to add details to loose watercolour paintings. I figured I’d try a bunch of things and just see what I go back to the most but I’m definitely finding different mediums suit different moods. ❤ Not sure if any of my rambling will help 😁
