I knew there was something off about Altered Carbon aside from the bad acting and silly dialogue, and you pretty much nailed it. There's an increase in vapid pop-culture referencing media, and by now it's getting pretty tedious. I think there's something to be said about a lost generation of perpetual adolescents, forced to live at home because of the recession, faced with such immense alienation from modern capitalism that they cling on to nostalgia for an imagined collective childhood from the 80s and 90s from which to draw comfort and solace in an increasingly unstable world.

also on the comment about "reaching back into the 80s to comment on the future".. it reminds me of an article i read called the death of reality which discusses the rise of nostalgia in relation to fukuyama's the end of history.. primarily the idea that "In the post-historical period there will be neither art nor philosophy, just the perpetual caretaking of the museum of human history"

"This obsession with the past is spreading faster. And without credible alternatives, it will chase us into the future." - I liked this and agree with it. A lot of movies and tv shows focus directly on the past, and I mostly think that it's because most people want to go back to when it all started, to feel how it felt when it came into existence. But they also want to invent the future to see the perception of both existing at the same time, we can't let go of what happened, but because of the experience, we also know it could happen in the future. Some ideas are however are over exaggerated, but others are fixated on what could be without it being explicitly revealed.

I think Westworld did a better job (I'm a little biased, since its my favorite movie) in portraying a "tamer" future.

Bravo! Very insightful. I still haven't gotten around to watching Altered Carbon. I seem to be the only person who didn't care for the novel, not least because the violence was a turnoff.
