“If there’s anything I know about Gaelic, it’s that the letters do not correspond to the sounds”
Well actually, they do, the letters just make different sounds in Irish than in English.
It’s almost like looking at a Korean character and saying “That looks like an S, therefore it must make that sound.”
No it doesn’t, it’s a different language so it makes an R or an L sound.

Most of the time when immigrants would come to the US in the 1800s, which if your ancestors are from Ireland is most likely because of the 1840 great famine, they would often settle in certan regions based on cultural groups. for me 3 of my grandparents are German decent from the midwest centered on Iowa and my grandfather on my moms side is from Boston entirely Irish decent based on dna.

When people from certain parts of the Americas say they are *insert other nationality,* it often only means that they descended from people of that nationality. They don’t mean that they are the same as you. Simple linguistic difference, but I see why it might be confusing/ offensive.

Also drinking beer is not an "Irish" thing, the Brits are far more partial to the bit of alcoholism than us Irish (according to alcohol consumption world statistics, actual evidence-based studies), don't worry, it's not like racial stereotyping is in any way insulting, demeanour or you know, racist.
"If I know anything about Gaelic" - My boy, it is safe to say you don't, Gaelic usually refers to Scot's Gael, so you know, not applicable to here at all, and if you knew anything about Irish/GAEILGE, you'd know it is not called Gaelic.
"Who's right?" - eh, we are, love.
The girl apologising, at least she has the decency to acknowledge that that was almost as cruel an act against Ireland as the British forcibly dividing the country into two States in 1917! I'll give her that.
Look, Irish accents are hard, I have not seen more than 2-3 people EVER pull off an Irish accent from outside of Ireland. It's not something that can be pulled off. It's too complex, even Irish people cannot pull off other Irish accents.
The dancing leprechaun BS was the most insulting part.
Having Irish roots is one thing, we can't choose where or what we are descended from, just PLEASE, Americans, don't make it your bragging point if you cannot even do basic things like understand why we historically dislike (i'm being polite) Britain, why the famine is such an angering subject, why The Troubles were NOT about religion and knowing the damn language is called GAEILGE and not Gaelic, I mean, that last one alone....that would be enough really. That and, repeat after me, "Ar-lind" "Together not, "Ar-Lind" not "Eye-er-laand"

Well, that's mostly because of assimilation and race issues, since this is the United States we're talking about. People used to be so horribly racist to those of Irish descent that many simply decided it would be easier to just give in and accept "American" (which was an largely still is just "white") culture than to deal with anti-Irish discrimination. Many former Black slaves who had been freed even described their treatment as something akin to "My master is a great tyrant, he treats me like a common Irishman." That's part of the reason that Americans from the Irish diaspora are so far removed from Irish culture--they traded it for one of a collective whiteness that still remains today. And then, once Irish = white, _then_ that's when it was decided that being Irish is a good thing, actually, so now we can get drunk and party and pretend to know about our history! While ethnically they may be Irish, realistically they don't have a claim to the label any much more than someone born and raised in Vietnam would lol. Also, nationality itself plays a much different role in the United States than in other countries since it's used more to describe ancestry, as the only actual Americans are this land's indigenous populations while everyone else is a mix. That's why I wouldn't get weird looks for calling myself an Irish-American here, but I would if I were actually in Ireland. Just a very weird American quirk that doesn't really hold water anywhere else in the world. Trust me, I'm just as annoyed with these kinds of hypocritical motherfuckers who sing about being Irish but have no idea the history or issues of the motherland or Irish people as y'all are. Sorry for the essay! Bíodh lá maith agat!
