Mike Nichols winning the Oscar® for Directing "The Graduate" at the 40th Academy Awards® in 1968. Presented by Leslie Caron and introduced by Bob Hope.
RIP Mike Nichols. You were one of my top favorite filmmakers. When I heard the news, I was in a complete state of shock. You will be greatly and dearly missed.
I had no idea that The Graduate was up against such stiff competition that year- an INCREDIBLE lineup of Pictures, so a VERY Impressive Win for Mike Nichols
just watched this for the first time last night. resonated as strong in 2015 as it did in 67! very well deserved award, I wish the movie would've won Best Picture!
Mike was a Brilliant Director, so deserved (and also the year before for Woolf) and you gotta love the glamour of 1967, the Apex of the 60’s before things went bad.
Mr. Mike Nichols , R.I.P. I deeply appreciated all your great works : Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf , The Graduate , Silkwood , Working Girl , The Birdcage , Closer and Angels in America......
Mr Brightside I think Angel's in America was his best and most memorable work. Roots and Angel's in America won more Emmys then any other Minister Series in History. In my opinion it was Mike's "Titanic".
RIP Mike your resting with God. Peace be with you. , My heart goes out to Diane, as many others I know your pain and wish I could tell you it gets better but somehow you just learn how to live with it. I think the peace comes to your heart knowing you have your personal angle watching over you and waiting until your together again. GOD Bless you ;-(
I was served with a heavy dose of sadness with I heard Mike Nichols had died quite suddenly. The true blue lovers of film will mourn his passing. What more can I say?
Completely off topic observation: When the orchestra started playing The Sounds of Silence after Nichols was announced the winner,it dawned on me for the first time that those opening 7 notes of the melody are identical to the first 7 notes to Sealed With A Kiss,in fact at first I thought that was the song they were playing.
It really could have went either way. So many great films nominated that year. Not just great, but they are the films that we still watch and discuss about it today. The Graduate and Bonnie & Clyde are definitely timeless classics.
In the heat of the night too-more than just a classic, a milestone, as also Guess who's coming to dinner was, although that film is more conventional in structure - but both are made so relevant and iincisive and touching mainly thanks to the great Sidney Poitier❤
The graduate only won one oscar? Only one? That's sad. At least it was given to the great Mike Nichols (Virginia woolf,Silkwood, working girl, closer,Charlie Wilson's war)
Angels in America won the MOST Emmy Awards(tied with Roots) Ever of any made for television(HBO) mini-series which I personally think is the equavilant of an Academy Award. Angels in America id by far my favorite Mike Nichols work...it is SO GOOD... followed by Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolf.
Great director more known for his work on stage but the films of his were amazing. The Graduate, Whos Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Closer, Silkwood and Charlie Wilsons War are my favourites
Aw, Mike Nichols was simply brilliant! On another note, Leslie Caron was so pretty and cute here. I recently re-watched "Daddy Long Legs," with the great Fred Astaire - along with a very young Leslie Caron. Leslie's hair was very short in 1954 when the film was made (the style then) so it took me a few seconds to recognize her here. ("Daddy Long Legs" was "released" in 1955). During this time, Mr. Astaire had recently lost his beloved wife Phyllis (to cancer) and decided to keep himself busy while he worked through his grief. For those who might be interested, there is a great dance number between Astaire and Caron from this film (out here on RUclips) called "Sluefoot." Fred Astaire (in his later years) mentioned (to interviewers) this particular dance number more than once, so he clearly thought it was special. (It was!) At this writing our Leslie is 91, and by all accounts still going strong. Cheers to all!
Super classy, and that was an amazing slate of films to go against, but if you had asked me which had the strongest directorial vision despite it's flaws, The Graduate would be the winner. Well played Mr. Nichols.
I told a friend that the The Graduate was one of those movies I could watch over and over. He laughed at teased me saying how I could like that kind of movie. Its okay, We're not friends anymore.
Thanks to the Academy (wink wink) for posting this video. I have been looking for this clip for years and yes, Mike Nichols was incredibly young at the time (36 upon receiving the award). Navid
Wow! All the nominees were deserving of this Academy Award!!- He should've honored all of them!! Also, he should've told us more about the Actors/Actresses in this superb movie!!!
Gotta wonder how the after party was (this was pre Governor's Ball in The Daisy days). Wonder if Warren and Julie ever crossed paths with Leslie and/or Natalie... It surely would have made for some great repartee.
Wow, Leslie Caron is stunning! I've never see her have such big hair. She's now close to 80 and still quite beautiful. Holy cow! Mike Nichols never looked better. Heck, he's almost HOT!
Did not enjoy The Graduate or ...Virginia Woolf, but did enjoy Mike Nichols' later work particularly the films he made with Meryl Streep. I felt Norman Jewison or Arthur Penn could easily have deserved this Best Director Oscar.
I love Nichols work, on The Graduate or elsewhere but one must admit that he had an easy shot and votes with this one, his very 2nd film - not just because of great storytelling, excellent cast and all but here's facts as for the directors nominations: two films dealing with racism; two films dealing with real criminal pairs and then his movie: unconventional love story and the more of acceptable of the bunch in the New Hollywood terms - except Brooks and Kramer weren't exactly part of the group. Look ahead and see that no film after this one was awarded just Best Direction.
FierceONeill you judge it off everything in the movies the camera shots the acting ad the editing as well as the score the director is the person who makes the visual aspect of the movie wonderful he is the vision itself
Five fantastic films in one year. That’s something we will never see again. The directors, actors , screenwriters are all shit today compared to 50 years ago.
I just loved the ultra kitschy sets! But Arthur Penn ("Bonnie & Clyde") should have won!!! Mike's victory clearly was a consolation prize for the year before!!! Well, at least Stanley Kramer and Norman Jewison didn't win for their now heavily dated films!!!
Love the band's version of "Sound of Silence."
But how did Simon & Garfunkel feel about it?
@@DTD110865 You can hear what they had to say about it. Did you hear that sound? It's the sound of
Leslie Caron looks GORGEOUS and Very Classy!
One of the greatest movies I've ever seen in my life. So deserved.

The line-up of nominated movies is amazing.
Yes it was the turn away from old Hollywood
@@JohnC-er3rg And now new-Old Hollywood is REALLY REALLY old.
just watched this for the first time last night. resonated as strong in 2015 as it did in 67! very well deserved award, I wish the movie would've won Best Picture!
@Diego Pisfil I wish I could block you. I'm tired of seeing your comments.
1:50 Anne Bancroft looks like a million bucks!
absolutely stunning.more beautiful than Woman in red carpet todays
Leslie Caron was breathtaking here.
Mike was a Brilliant Director, so deserved (and also the year before for Woolf) and you gotta love the glamour of 1967, the Apex of the 60’s before things went bad.
Mr. Mike Nichols , R.I.P.

What a moment.. also Anne's look omg!! She is an angel, i miss and love her so much!
Leslie Caron looks phenomenal! What elegance, and without the whole "whose-gown-stole-the-Oscars" superficiality so apparent in todays Oscars.
Ann Bancroft looks stunning!!
Leslie’s Ensemble DID steal the show 👍
Today's Oscars is just a cesspool. Corrupted by too much ego, money and politics
Along some serious hair, too!
Leslie Carol is breathtaking.
Caron...
I noticed that as well but Ms. Caron looks absolutely in that gown and the fabulous hairstyle she has!
Wow, what a competitive field that year!
Rest In Peace to a true artist and visionary. You may be gone but your art and films will live on forever
His work in The Graduate was magnificent, but his best will always be Woolf. But hey, at least he won.
Mr Brightside I think Angel's in America was his best and most memorable work. Roots and Angel's in America won more Emmys then any other Minister Series in History. In my opinion it was Mike's "Titanic".
patr70 Did Mike direct Roots??
mike856ms Read it again.
What about working girl?
Right, Graduate was great, but Virginia Woolf was the bigger challenge for a first time film director only associated with comedy at the time
RIP Mike your resting with God. Peace be with you. , My heart goes out to Diane, as many others I know your pain and wish I could tell you it gets better but somehow you just learn how to live with it. I remember watching this broadcast. His win was actually a surprise. It came from left field. Jewison and Penn were the favorites.
I was served with a heavy dose of sadness with I heard Mike Nichols had died quite suddenly. The true blue lovers of film will mourn his passing. What more can I say?
If I could gibe you another "thumbs up", I would. The movie biz and world at large a lesser place without him.
Leslie Caron was really adorable as Lili and Gigi, but here a good ten-ish years later she's looking even finer
Completely off topic observation:
When the orchestra started playing The Sounds of Silence after Nichols was announced the winner,it dawned on me for the first time that those opening 7 notes of the melody are identical to the first 7 notes to Sealed With A Kiss,in fact at first I thought that was the song they were playing.
You’re right, it is a completely off topic observation
I watched "In Cold Blood" today. Amazing work!
good speech. perfectly thankful and succinct
Rest in Heaven, Mr. Nichols
Love Caron's French accent.
little known fact Bob Hope given name was Leslie Towne
So it was two Leslies on stage
This man will be miss yes indeed but there will never be any one like him
Miss you Mike.

It's a very competetive year, Bonnie and Clyde, Cool hand luke, damn, too many great films!
It's a classic!! Deserved many more accolades than it received.
Angels in America won the MOST Emmy Awards(tied with Roots) Ever of any made for television(HBO) mini-series which I personally think is the equavilant of an Academy Award.

He was quite handsome.
Gabriel Millines Oh Hun.. I am sure he was a Total Stud. ✨
thank you
so many great directors
A brilliant director!!!!!!!
Anne Bancroft looked marvelous.
HE WAS SOOOO YOUNG! GREAT PICTURE
the graduate is my second favourite film of all time so i agree obviously with the academy
And your first is....?

wow i love the stage, so classy

he should have won the previous year for 'who's afraid of virginia woolf' too
Best Oscar ever.
for me the graduate is the best directed film of all time, it's just beautiful how he did it
Leslie Caron Looks very hot here.
MrBaddel77 But a very wooden presenter.
The only one who should have had a chance to beat him is Richard Brooks for In Cold Blood, which was amazing.
It was-- and so-o-oo depressing (as it should be)
NO. He deserved the Oscar for The Graduate completely.
How sweetly nervous was Leslie Caron here!
Thanks to the Academy (wink wink) for posting this video. I have been looking for this clip for years and yes, Mike Nichols was incredibly young at the time (36 upon receiving the award).

He was hotter than you realize (his sex life) not Diane Sawyer either....
Mike = really nice person and very talented.
She's gorgeous 🥰
She's such a great actress that most people under 50 have never heard of her.
When was the last time five great movies like these were released in the same year,
Wow. Totally agree.
SEE Leslie's movie "Who Killed Teddy Bear" (1965) ...a real weird one. All filmed on location in NYC.
Did not enjoy The Graduate or ...Virginia Woolf, but did enjoy Mike Nichols' later
work particularly the films he made with Meryl Streep. I felt Norman Jewison or

RIP, Mike.
The one day I Google Leslie Caron, she shows up in this video on my subscriptions. The world is too freaky.
We’re is such elegance today ... I can only think of few like Angelina Jolie .. but Hollywood was very special in classic days
It wasn't until 54 years later that a movie's solo Oscar win was for Best Director.
FierceONeill you judge it off everything in the movies the camera shots the acting ad the editing as well as the score the director is the person who makes the visual aspect of the movie wonderful he is the vision itself
I think a combination of both.
All nominated movies are modern day classics
I'm so glad Nichols won for this film than his previous work.
I'd have walked slower towards the stage so the music could play longer. It's a lovely version of "Sound of Silence"
I agree.
This back when there were great movie stars.......no more.
God... Leslie Caron looks a lot like Kylie Minogue
wow, very tough competition in this category.
Because the Academy voters has different opinions.
A time when people would "lose" with grace and dignity. Instead of ranting on social media the next day.
I'm confused....how does one judge great directing? Is it the way the actors move or interact with each other or is it something more?
Norman Jewinson or Penn deserved this award
The Academy voters has different opinions.
Five fantastic films in one year. That’s something we will never see again. The directors, actors , screenwriters are all shit today compared to 50 years ago.
And yet... it's still "THE GRADUATE" :)
Kramer’s film is kinda dated, yes, but I look at Jewison’s film now as a solid mystery/detective story that just happened to have racial overtones
I can't see how Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf has aged better....
I think graduate should of won best picture as well
An Oscar was well deserved for Mike Nichols. A win by Stanley Kramer would have been abysmal.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a terrific movie.
She should get an Oscar for that hairdo!😂
Luv the big hair
For me, it should be a tie between Nichols and Brooks.
yeah, only 36 when he won
I would have put Nichols 5th on this list.
Angelina to play Caron?
Diva
Wait, Mike Nichols was young?
totally agree
