  • This is a series of video clips I recorded on April 1, 2012 during a photography run to McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. These were recorded between the hours of 6:30am through 8:30am.
While photographing McWay Falls this past weekend, I thought I'd try the video capability of my camera for the first time. While I'm not very adept at post production, I think these clips give a fair indication as to the power of the Pacific Ocean along the California Coast. I check the swell reports on a regular basis and this day appeared almost "magically" out of nowhere, so it was a last minute decision to make the four hour drive.
McWay Falls has an 80 foot drop (upper left). I couldn't believe the height of these breaks. The entire show lasted just over two hours before the swells disappeared. I once saw a film print of a break pushing over the tops of the trees on Saddle Rock. This was about three years ago. It really grabbed my attention and I was nearly in a state of disbelief. I thought then, "That's the shot I want to get at McWay Falls!" Timing is everything. The air was full of salt spray and the light was early morning behind the mountains and trees, mostly. I tried my best. I'm hoping someday the swells will push in during the evening hours. They have to reach a height of at least 30 feet to compete with what we saw this day. High tide helps as well. I felt lucky to have witnessed this magnificent event.

Wow, the waves smash the waterfall and make it tiny, waves are very powerful, beautiful part of the day between 6 and 8
