A lot of gen 3 sprites are brighter due to the fact gen 3 was on the gba. Which didn't have a backlight. So most games would make the sprites using brighter colors to try and help a bit with the issue.
And the back ones used for the gen 1 and 2 Pokémon in RSE are just the gen 2 back sprites but expanded at the bottom.
Y'see, does that explain why trapinch's sprite in the box was pink? I don't know, but I do know it throws me off every time
Couldnt they have rectified that in Emerald though since the GBA SP was long out by then? At least FR/LG had good sprites

@@Jabloon Apparently the GBA will catch on fire for the very, very tasking job of changing the colors to not look washed out
The coloring of gen 3 sprites were often brighter than official art because the original model GBA had a notoriously very dark screen. A lot of GBA games have this attribute actually, if you don't have that context it makes some games look weird on whatever more modern display you're playing on.

I actually love the gen 3 sprites, they've got desaturated colors and a more pixelated look. Makes me wish more romhacks would use them instead of the gen 4 ones, and that someone would make some gen 3 style sprite sheets for the gen 4 and beyond Pokemon
Something cool is that the Gen 4 prototypes had a closer artstyle to Gen 3, so some of its sprites could be used if someone wanted to spice things up in a ROM hack using the vanilla artstyles :v
Gen 3's sprites were so awesome. I loved Salamence's colors in gen 3 compared to the later generations

How did GameFreak not expect anyone to think Feraligatr’s back sprite to be anything BUT a butt?
The feraligatr bumps aren’t it’s leg and tail. They are actually just ridges on its back. It has two more over its shoulders. It’s much more clear in its gen 5 sprites and 3D model

Scizor's wings have always been able to fold up into those sheaths. Just look at the opening movie for Pokemon Stadium 2.
And besides that, his wings will block his face in the backsprite. It looks better without the wings folded out.

Nah, a lot of gba games used brighter colors because the original gba doesn’t have a backlight.
Tbf the official artwork he referenced was made around the time of Gen 4, so majority of Gen 3 sprites went from "warm" color to slightly "cool" colors.

Also keep in mind that the gba uses a color palette system, so they may have been limited by the color palettes
@@ConnerTurmon not by the colors they could chose for each sprite, they probably just left in a beta design for some Pokemon, and some other were definitely because of the GBA lacking a backlight

Most if not all of the gen 3 backsprites are actually ripped straight from gen 2, which explains a lot of seemingly random design decisions for some of them, ie Scizor. I assume they didn’t bother to change this since you’d likely never use him in the gen 3 games. Doesn’t explain why he doesn’t have wings in gen 4 though :(

I don't know about that, but this just makes me think of how with ladybugs, their spotted "shell" is actually wings.
If i have to, I will die alone on the hill saying that gen 3 Swampert and Feraligatr sprites are when their designs peaked.
The bulky look always fit them more in my eyes.

Gen 3 sprites colors are a bit off and more on the lighter side because they were made to be accurate on the original gba's reflective screen, which was darker and gave off more saturated colors. On digital screens the colors are accurate to the original, so they look washed out, and it's why they got changed in gen 4, since the DS had digital backlit screens. Emerald came out when the gbaSP was out, but by that point they had to reuse assets from ruby/sapphire and fire red leaf freen

Nospass is fine, you can still tell the easter island reference clearly and obviously a render is gonna have better detail than a Sprite with not many pixels.
Same regarding Luvdisc, looks fine and again # of pixels.
Scizor can hide its wings...
Also the color variation is likely do to the GBA design/limitation. Nospass was always blue on the physical cartridge.
Yeah, the original GBA displays colors a little darker and more saturated than what the code calls for. It doesn't have a backlight. The developers knew that, and made sure their imagination displayed properly on the GBA screen.
Yeah, I’m not really seeing any issue here, they look good for the technical limitations. Gen 3 overall just really nailed the whole visual style IMO.

Yeah I agree, it looks bad in its original Gen 3 sprite and looks smaller as well compared to its pre evo Shuppet.
When I saw it for the first time in Sapphire I didn't even recognize the zipper mouth and thought it was sewed shut with string, which still makes sense for the whole creepy doll schtick but I was still surprised by how vastly different I interpreted Banette the whole time when I came across official artwork. At least gen 4 made it clearer what its supposed to be.

Scizor def has retractable wings, literally can see it in the anime (or the bulbapedia page). Not an error its back sprite is intentional
Liking for the nostalgic music
Not really depicted in the 2d games that I know of, but in the 3D games scizor is shown to be able to withdrawn the wings, sort of like a switch blade. Usually seen when it attacks or faints.
You get your explanation for the scizor back sprite with the gen 5 dynamic animations those are his wings at rest and the clear part sputters out of them as he lifts up and buzzes around.❤
the colors looks off because those sprites werent meant to be seen on modern lcd screens. when viewed on a gba or with a filter made to emulate the gba screen they look much closer to pallets used in official artwork.

Scizor’s Gen3 back sprite was really just a high-color version of the Gen2 sprite, as was the case for almost all of the previously existing Pokémon (with some exceptions)

Gameboy advance rendering these things was like a cancer patient trying to play Major League Baseball in a wheelchair. It was too hard on the performance so they went with some different sprites. They apparently answered this in a QNA and when technology evolved to better host them, they replaced them
Scyther is a praying mantis Pokémon, able to put its wings away or keep them out. Scizor is the exact same except it’s a steel type (made of metal) so it’s wings go into those “nubs”
