- Jack Ronald Jones and Jerry Lee Beatty stopped to help a stranded motorist, but their intentions were far from selfless. Instead of giving Stephanie Roper a ride, they took her to an abandon house where they tortured and killed her.

I can’t believe the awful way her family was treated during the aftermath of her murder and throughout the trial. Reprehensible decisions by the judge!

It happens a lot more than people would like to believe
People still use the word awful? Hmmm interesting

The good old days.
Her poor family! They endured absolute hell in the loss of their daughter and then were betrayed by the authorities afterwards. I’m so disgusted by how badly they were all let down, including Stephanie’s siblings.
I cried so hard when I heard that Stephanie's mother waited that whole trial to say a few words for her baby and the judge denied her even that small mercy. Sickening.
Really...? You cried over a yt video?

Those murderers felt the same way that you appear to feel; Nothing! The making of a monster step 1: Don’t care about anything
This is absolutely terrible. The poor girl was tortured and then the law tortured her parents. I’m in total disbelief at the attitude of the judge and the lawyers. Disgraceful and very upsetting.
I cannot BELIEVE they wouldn’t allow Stephanie’s mother to make an impact statement. Truly disgusting I feel so sorry for her family!!!!!
Well, at least the one guy died in prison and the other is still in after 40 + years
Ditto.
"No one would have imagined that a broken down car would be the catalyst for her death". That line gave me chills. It is fu***ng INSANE to think that, maybe, had she not driven into that ditch, she could have possibly still been alive today. Probably with a husband, children & grandchildren & had a normal life. So scary how a single moment in time can change life forever.
She was wasted. Drink drivers cause crashes.
@@johnstory2996 Yeah she was clearly trashed. 3-4 drinks is more than enough to do it.
Same I got goosebumps down my back!
She was so responsible; she wouldn't think of sleeping it off at her friend's house. One decision changes everything.
And literally one suburb away!
This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard. The idea that the judicial system so obviously and unapologetically gave more credence to the disgusting men who took this beautiful girl's life than they gave to her heartbroken family should infuriate any decent human being. Thank you for showing so much respect to the victim and her family.
This happened in my home town. I was only 7 years old, but I remember it well. It was a very small town at the time, and every parent was shocked and terrified. When they those animals came up for parole, we were shocked and terrified again. They didn’t get it, but the fact that it was possible was insane after what they did to her.
Wow, this is enraging!! Hope the judges and the defense lawyer met with a lot of misfortune later in their lives. So sad for Stephanie and her family.
Yes. I thought the same thing! Sorry, NOT sorry.
I do not wish misfortunes on them! I hope and pray 🙏 that they realized their horrible decisions..and the effect it had on this poor family..and they change their ways....if not I'm sure God will explain it to them!!!
Not sure. Jack's defender is still alive and can probably be written to, emailed or fucked with somehow. His name is Gary E. Bair and he retired from law in 2020. His website sings of his praises. Disgusting
@@Ihuicatl yeah, probably from all the scumbags he did such a great job of defending. Luckily they're not all this cunning and effective. Damn.
Dare to dream. Im a cop & i no longer believe in karma. Seen too many bad people live nice long lives
I hope all the jurors and the judge and anybody who is a part of this case on court, feels shame every time their head hits that pillow. Thanks to the community that roasted that sentence.
The treatment of Stephanie's family prior to the trial, during and afterwards, was absolutely despicable.
If that Judge wasn't held accountable for his actions, then I hope his life was filled with immense pain.
I agree this is horrendous!! That judge is a heartless! GOD BLESS Stephanie's family💜
Always remember karma is a kick ass reality and it comes with a CAPITAL K!
I agree ..
Totally disgusting
I don’t wish pain on anyone - that’s was these two monsters did to Stephanie. But I agree that this judge was not wise and, for whatever reason, failed the victim and her family over and over and on so many levels.
He deserves to be removed from his position.
I don’t wish pain upon anyone because I am a decent person and I live with pain every single hour of every single day! Unless of course I could pass my pain to both the judge and defense attorney 😂
It’s hard to be a good person in a country that doesn’t value good people. I can totally identify with the victims’ siblings. I feel for the whole family.
You just condemned the entire country. But I'm sure that doesnt include you because you're a "good" person.
@JustADawg did you watch the video? Lol
@@SpicyTexan64 imagines himself bringing subtle and nuanced discourse to RUclips comments 🤡
This country is trash. The medical system told me I was going to die and literally was just going to let it happen. Like in those movies and shows. All I needed was a kidney stone blasted and the stent they stuck in my kidney removed. Almost a year and me going septic I almost went to jail because it took me literally being the most evil and hateful person to get that surgery. I almost went to jail right from that hospital bed. So yeah. The country is crap. It might not use to be I don't know I am only 27 but now it's bad. I went through dystopia. The medical system showed me that. They said my urine was clean. It was black and smelled like a dead animal.
I can’t imagine the unending torment it must be for family and friends, especially parents, to have to live with the knowledge of the suffering their loved one went through before their death. These types of horrific crimes create pain and trauma far beyond just the victim. What incredible people Stephanie’s family are to fight for future victims families despite their pain.
My story is extremely mild compared to the suffering in this case. My son committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt from the spindles on the stairwell leading up to his bedroom. He had just turned 15 a few days earlier. I only read the autopsy report once . No alcohol or drugs in his system. I can’t even write about how long it took for him to ….I just can’t. I try not to think about it.
This is so much worse, I don’t know how family and friends survive such horrific information their loved one suffered.
Therapists tell us to focus on the fact they are no longer suffering .
@Just Another Smith I'm so very sorry for your loss!! I cannot imagine but have friends who have lost son to suicide and other friends lost brother. Peace unto you on this journey.

Thank you for sharing this video essay. All of your hard work, is very much appreciated. ❤
The way Stephanie’s family was treated is shameful, absolutely shameful.
I think that this case should have be re-heard. The family impact statements should be heard.
It should not have been up to a victim’s family to fight for victims rights.
What the feck is wrong with people.
Shame on the judge/s, and that lawyer for what they did to Stephanie’s parents, extended family and her friends.
There were more than 2 monsters involved in this crime.

Shameful
This video infuriated me. What kind of judge jury and prosecuter was that??? Just disgusting.
And once again you handled this story with grace.
This is absolutely tragic 😥 and the way the parents were treated was absurd...that being said I must tell you how much I love the way you narrate your stories your dark humor is not lost on me
I remember this story from a crime doc some years ago. The lovely Mother said she felt as though she'd been disemboweled when she learned what her daughter went through. As a Mother myself, I can relate.❤
Me too, when I listen to these I wonder if I would want to know if my kid was tortured...IDK I'm sure it would ruin whatever semblance of a life I'd have left
💔
one of the most horrific examples of "justice" I have ever heard. the "Justices" were obviously the stock those monsters were bred from. I suspect family/political ties between the two we are not aware of. absolutely a dishonor of human beings
yes the judge in this case was awful.

I thought I had heard it all until I heard he asked on his blog 'I need finances for art supplies'. How gross can you be. She was an artist. I am one myself and it is one of the only things that gives me joy and beaty. If my murderer said something like that, let alone if my family had to hear it... after 25 years he is still bullying them. This is so vile I honestly have no words. I am a hardened true crime fanatic, I even did my thesis and art (yes, art) project when I graduated in a museum about people like this, this monster asking for art supplies really hit me the wrong way.
This has to be one of those case that gets me so angry at the system.
The victim and the family were treated like they were the killers
They were legit treated even worse than the killers...
This trial really shows history that the 80s were otherworldly in so many ways. The judge in the first trial must've owed a favor to the defense attorney. They probably thought they could just do whatever they wanted and no one would pay more attention. But look out for Mr and Mrs Roper! Their actions turning their lives into advocacy are so brave and dedicated. They were truly a "force to be reckoned with." They still hold 5k races to raise funds and awareness. My heart goes out to this beautiful family and my prayers for their traumatized adult children.
Thank you for being these cases to our attention. You've focused on so many cases I have never heard of and I appreciate that very much. I feel like, when we hear of these cases, the victims and the crimes against them aren't forgotten.

Stephanie went through so much pain. The parents went through so much mental anguish. Imagine not being able to attend your daughter's killers trial, disgusting! The justice system let them down.
I lost my older sister to getting murdered. She was murdered by being shot just like Stephanie. And I can confirm what her mom said about her other siblings, losing an older sibling is gut wrenching; I’m 24 and I’m still lost and find myself wondering why god would let something happen to such a good soul like her. I can't believe the awful way her family was treated during the aftermath of her muder and throughout the trail. The way the judge acted was truly disgusting. RIP Stephanie.🙏🕊❤🙏🕊❤🙏🕊❤
I am so happy that the family and the greater part of the community fought and successfully changed the laws that so disgracefully protected the wrong people. Thank you ❤️
The defense attorney, the prosecutor and the judge should sit on the bench right next to these monsters and await their well deserved DS.
You do an amazing job on this channel. The way you give your honest opinion and the way you make the victims the real focus is great. As sad as these cases are it gives me hope for the world with people like you in it!
Thanks for this story, it is very important. I am left very disturbed by the treatment of the victims, by the judge, and by the prosecution. The only positive from this is the changes that were made to the system. Ms. Roper left a legacy that cost her her life and her family's dignity during the proceedings. I had hoped to hear that the judges had been fired.
I live near a highway named after her and was waiting to hear the story behind it...thank you for being so insightful
The way her family was treated by the judicial system is so disgusting, words fail me. Having had the misfortune of being in a position where I gave a victim impact statement before a court, I can honestly say it never once occurred to me that someone would EVER say I didn't have that right. I am eternally grateful to this brave family for fighting for what's right, it's so easy to see where Stephanie got her fighting spirit. I don't have to hope she's resting in peace, I know she is resting easily with a beautiful family honoring her memory in the most commendable way.
In a sad case, this was beautiful narration. Thank you for caring about a victim in the way you did.
Holy fuck! The prosecutors totally dropped the ball on this case 🤬
What a huge failure of the legal system. And Roberta Roper taking her pain and channeling it into protecting other victims and their families...that is grace under pressure, strength in the face of adversity, and a human being that truly wanted to make lasting changes. Victim advocacy is important, especially with the corruption within our court rooms and prison systems.
Enraging episode, but also an unintentional call for us to protect one another. Very well done, thank you!!
That was intense. I got so angry for her parents. Thank you for her story.
God forbid something so evil happen to the judge presiding over the first trail, the defense attorneys, all the ploticians and everyone that was against this amazing family, I guarantee you every single one of them would feel exactly the way Stephanie's family and friends felt!
Stephanie's parents are some amazingly resilient people! God Bless them for all their hard work to help others and strive for change. It takes a huge heart to turn a tragedy into a force for good in this world. 💖💖💖
This entire story is horrendous.

Here I am thinking "oh cool an episode from Maryland" without processing that it could be again one of the WORST things humans can do to another human being. Great episode as always.
Im not suprised how poorly the system failed her family, it honestly so upsetting that her family found out the way they did and had to go through so much struggle to see even a smidgen of justice. This genuinely broke my heart and wish the best for her family. Im not a religious person but i hope her father was able to reunite with Stephanie.
Accolades to Roberta for her voice and creating changes! Her statements were so very true and powerful! 👏
Entirely infuriating, I have to assume that the judge and the lawyer are criminals. Despicable, disgusting, feral, all them! Prayers for this young lady and her family 🙏
Reasons why I'm skeptical about the judicial system. This case was ridiculous to say the least. I am so sorry this beautiful woman and her loving family had to go through this.
Our judicial system is a joke. First you've got the jury, a bunch of people don't want to be there and are probably pretty stupid like most of the general public. Then all the withholding of information during a trial. Nothing should be help back from the idiot jurors. Too many times important stuff about the criminal's record is kept out of the courts. The jury should know everything about the person on trial. It will usually speak volumes about the person overall character. Things need to change!
Such an unbelievable case! Not only the crime, but the way the family was treated throughout the trial process!! Thanks for covering!!
The treatment of the Roper family was unreal. That shouldn't have been legal, it's so shocking that victim statements weren't required and were allowed to be turned down.
Thank you for this! Your videos are so informative 👏 this was a heart-wrenching story... the way the courts sided with the murderers... sick...

I pretty much expect such reprehensible behavior from defense attorneys, especially when they KNOW their clients are drenched in blood and KNOWN to be guilty, but the fact the judge went along with that and betrayed Stephanie's family is even worse!
the poor thing could've walked a mile back to her friend, all to not miss an opportunity to go shopping with her mother. so sad

I remember Foggy Bottoms. The Bayou was also a great hang out for live music. It can be very creepy leaving Georgetown as a young female alone. I got stranded down there. It was one of THE most terrifying nights of my life for sure. What Stephanie's family went through with this judicial system is horrific.

I feel you. I should be asleep too but can't
This case still haunts me. I was 21 years old and lived in NOVA and it was all over the local news and papers. I can still see her anguished mother on TV and it was heartbreaking. Not only did the Ropers lose their beloved daughter, they also had to fight for justice. Her murder was savage and it should have been much easier to convict those MONSTERS. Roberta Roper was the ultimate mama bear. Through her pain and anguish she got justice, changed laws and kept Stephanie’s memory alive.
My heart goes out to the Ropers! I'm glad they found a voice and put forth such awesome laws! It's just sad it had to be at their daughters death.
30:51 I started to cry. What she wrote in her journal broke me. 🥺 I'm proud of her family for not giving up, they helped give a sense of justice to many with their daughters committee.
You always do a fantastic job in centring the victim and their family but you really outdid yourself on this one 👏
The judge and the defence were an absolute disgrace in this case. Judge especially since they're supposed to be impartial. This whole thing seemed to be entirely focused on the perpetrators and what they wanted, as if they were somehow the victims. I can't understand the logic. The worthless judge was ignoring the victim and her family, it's so disgusting it doesn't even feel real. He really should have been fired and thank god they managed to get the further sentences for these monsters as well as getting the laws changed.
Poor Stephanie may she rest in peace. The judge and defense seem more than shady, how awful it's infuriating how the family was treated. 11 years im sorry, pardon? I'm proud they kept fighting it shouldn't have been that way. My heart hurts right now.
Thank God the laws have changed. My son was murdered in 2011. The laws still need work, but we had a victim advocate and were always informed about court dates being rescheduled. God bless her family and all families that have lost a family member to murder. It is not something any person should go through.
This one is so haunting. Stephanie looks just like this woman I know.
This was infuriating to listen to, I'm just appalled. Her parents endured absolute hell, yet still pursued so that other victims families would fare better in our criminal justice system. This whole debacle seems typical in some states, that care more about the criminals than the victims.
I feel the Justice system in this story are also monsters. So sorry for her family.
