Definitely much prefer this type of behind the scenes / story telling vibe of vlogs instead of the more techy stuff as I'm not so much into the specific aspects of video making. I found this video much more entertaining. Keep up the good work, you're great at what you do!
Glad to hear it! I'm having a lot of fun with vlogs and have plans to make a ton of them, but I'm passionate about sharing knowledge in the world of cameras too. Thanks for the support!
I love what you’ve got going on with your channel Jackson!!! You have a very unique and upbeat vlog style that’s not only entertaining, but it also keeps me totally engaged from start to finish! You’re a talented, hardworking, and unpretentious young man with a great deal of wisdom that’s well beyond your years!! So, keep on keeping it real Jackson and I’ll keep on enjoying the ride!! 😎 🏄♂️🤙
It's a great lesson, regardless of surfing or life. You already knew you took a risk choosing the path you chose. If it didn't work out you might have some catching up to do, but it seems to be working so far. I manage a team of younger folks I've frequently said the same to: don't be afraid to make mistakes or take chances. I'm recognized as an expert in my field and have publicly said, "it's because I've f'ed up so much that I've learned so much." The key is learning from it - kudos to you for risking the beat-down to get to the root of the concern. (And for the record, I've had beat-downs in Santa Cruz and Maui around similar discussions... years before your time, admittedly).
Dude, this might sound weird but I'm proud of you. It's hard to not beat ourselves up but it's so pointless to do so. My mentor always told me "Pay attention to detail, do the work and learn from the experience"
I think one big difference between HI and the mainland is that in Hawaii its more about being conscious about the group rather than just focusing on your own experience or what you trying to do. Every place, every spot has its own hierarchy, pecking order or whatever you wanna call it. i think as long as you stay aware of that you should be fine~ and of course you'll probably run into some grumpy uncles that are just mad at whatevers and alittle unreasonable lol. at any rate just keep plugging on, you'll be fine~ mahalo for the great content~
I haven't ever surfed enough to even earn "Kook" status yet but I have learned a great lesson myself. Wise words from such a young dude, love it man, keep it up!!
Amazing story and thank you foe sharing, learning to surf is extremely intimidating, especially trying to the learn the rules of the ocean out there. Instead of taking the tough guy approach you sat back and learned and personally I just learned to try that approach now
It’s like we’re a little family living on the beach. No it’s more like; it’s like we’re a little family living on the beach in paradise. Hope we realize how lucky we are? Enjoy your day Jackson, lovin the videos.
Started following you from Jamie's channel. Your skiing edits are amazing. Don't worry, I've gotten chewed out surfing multiple times and I'm local lol. For someone your age, you having a very positive way of looking at situations... very inspirational. Keep up the good work in and out of the water bruddah!
Geese Jackson your vlogs just get better and better every time I watch a new one ! You handled that situation perfectly Hawaiians don’t mess around when it comes to surfing especially when the waves are good and there’s a bunch of hualey’s in the water so yeah good job for staying calm asking what you did wrong that was key. Back in the day when the hui was in full force you would have probably got slapped and your camera would have been gone but times change and its a lot mellower now. Keep doing your thing brother keep surfing as much as you can pretty soon your surfing will talk for you and then you wont ever have to hear beat it again Aloha !
Had a similar experience in the lineup earlier this year not as aggressive hahah. But better to see their point, hopefully you learn something which is much better than just leaving and not knowing. Recently subscribed looking forward to more 🤙
I wish my job was sitting under an umbrella at back door on the Northshore of Oahu, and flying a drone while filming a legend pro surfer. Dude! I am a fan for life after that story at the end. I loved the lesson and it really showed the one thing we all knew-.you are human. I love the example you set, because I think you had losing options (you coulda quit and never went back, you coulda got punched, you coulda fought him...etc) to take as well. You took the winning way and learned. I’ll implement that life experience any day. The surfing stuff doesn’t make sense to me, because I am from Montana. I have seen movies about the line-up. I wish that could be explained. You should narrate it too, haha.
1) Always study the lineup before you paddle out. If the conditions are beyond your abilities, go somewhere else or surf another day. 2) Whenever possible, paddle around the lineup, not through it. 3) Beginners/novices should stay off-to-the-side of the crowd, observe, and only attempt to catch waves that pass through unridden. 4) If a collision between a paddler and a rider looks imminent, paddlers should “keep their line” and let the rider be the one to take evasive action. 5) Try your best not to be a wave hog - wait your turn, and avoid the temptation to back paddle (‘cutting in line’ by paddling around a surfer and dropping in behind). 6) Unless the threat of injury is a distinct possibility, never ditch (abandon) your board. 7) Unless previously agreed to, it’s one surfer per wave, or two surfers per two-way peak. 8) In general, first surfer up, closest to the curl, has the right of way. 9) If you inadvertently drop-in on someone, immediately and safely exit the wave. 10) If you lose your board, you are responsible for it. This includes any surfboard damage or injury that may result. 11) Don’t be a dick. Apologize if you drop-in on someone. Explain firmly yet kindly when an unknowing novice breaches etiquette. Do your best to share. Help other surfers in trouble. Always pick up your trash.
Hey Jackson No worries it is local guys There are rules in the water, just stay on the line and then you need to learn jiu-jitsu defend yourself. That is a nice vlog 🏄🇧🇷
This is an Excellent Video! Started a couple months ago watching Jamie O'Brien's Videos and subscribed. Always like your comments in his vids. Then the Cohen Sisters and then saw that you had your channel. Had to go and see your past videos and history. Awesome, amazing and inspirational. Watched it with the family and Looking forward to the next one.
Hey Jackson I love your aspect in the solo vlog arena cause I’ve really enjoyed all of your production tricks and the family things all of you do for JOB keep it up cause it’s all good, thanks.

As a complete kook who hasn't yet mastered the pop up, the video spoke to me. The locals at a Santa Cruz break weren't so mellow when I kept getting in their way. Like you said, a lesson learned and future conflicts averted.
Jackson, great videos dude. Really love your narrative and totally enjoy listening to your views.... Glad I found your channel, I always saw you on JOB vlogs and thought, he's a good dude that Jackson 🤙

Hey Jackson, Just subscribed thanks to the girls. Or as Gru would call them, “Gorls.” Great point about learning from your mistakes. But most importantly , you shared your mistake. This is something I live by. I’m always sharing with my daughter and my colleagues, my mistakes. Not only did you learn, we all learned. Thanks for sharing this very important lesson. Ps. The go pro still makes you a kook. Although it takes one to know one. Hee hee!!! Glad I subscribed.
Hey Jackson, always been a fan of you on the Jamie vlogs - I really admire your positivity. Didn’t realize you had a channel as well but already subscribed. I was actually going to comment and ask about how you’ve experienced localism in the water and sure enough there it was haha. Regardless, all part of the learning process and I really appreciate how down to earth and understanding you are. It will definitely take you far, looking forward to following your progress on that journey. Keep living the life man, cheers!
Can‘t believe you‘re only 21. How you reflect on life is amazing. Already legend...incredible filmmaker!
