Super excited for this year. Planted 10 lbs in 10-15 foot wide rows around food plots and to hide our access. Sprayed simazine last week (Southern Illinois). Just hoping seed does not wash away. Thank you WHS, you guys are great! Most of my leisure time is spent trying to follow your principles.
My switchgrass is coming today. I think I'll need to spray, disc/till spray again at planting. It seems that I can't get liquid simazine here in Michigan but I have my 24D and glyphosate. I have been telling all the fellow hunters I know about your videos. Thank you
Thanks a lot! I hope this one made a lot of sense...I know Dylan tried to make sure to illustrate a lot better to help show how the switch relates to the overall strategy.
Jeff:20+ inches snow in northern WI. Very much looking forward to getting started on the lan you designed for us. Thanks for the specific steps in planting the SG.
Jeff, I purchased the same spreader for this year’s seeding and fertilizing. Can’t wait to see how it performs. Sure will beat casting seed by hand lol.
I had great success last year frost seeding in DEC, good application of simozine in spring and mowed 3x. From late july after last mowing until 1st frost came back to 2ft tall 1st year. Impressed myself. Thanks for all the tips Jeff.
Great video. I follow all of your videos and was familiar with everything except wether or not i could frost seed into an existing field with vegetation. Looks like it's a go as long as I follow up with spraying.
Jeff I really hope you can answer this for me. If I circle my field corn food plot 1/2 acre with 10 foot swath of switch grass will the deer walk through the switch grass to get to the corn and feel safe or will they feel confined?? Thanks for any help.
Hi Vince really appreciate you watching! Alfalfa isn't a very high value for plot. Begins late in the spring and dies back early in the Fall. Really not s good Fall food source. For similar use clover is almost always a better choice with the exception of some of the more arid areas out West....Montana for example.
Just waiting for things to dry out so I don’t get stuck! Just 2 1/2 hours straight west of you (Mankato area)…. We got roughly 2” of rain and 3” of snow that last couple days. Thanks again!!! I think I have all of your videos on repeat!
Jeff, I have a question. In this video you said you can mix your 24D and glyphosate. But, do you run all your chemicals through the same sprayer? Pre-and post-emergent, glyphosate, plot start, and plot boost? Do you run them all through throughout the year and do you ever flush your sprayer out before using the next. I know you spray certain stuff at different times of the year, but I’m hesitant to run my glyphosate in the same sprayer as my plot booster. Just looking for some wisdom in this to ease concerns. Thankful for you and love your channel.
Josh - You Need/Must/Should thoroughly rinse your sprayer, boom, nozzles out after every use. We usually run about 5-10 gallons but simazine is chalky mix and takes about twice that to get a good cleaning.
i frost seeded my switch at thanksgiving and now that its march and the sandhill cranes are back they are feeding in that area all day i hope they arent able to eat all that little tiny seed
I drill seeded switchgrass last summer, I am looking to spray Simazine on it this march yet. How long after or before a rain should that be sprayed? Love your videos!
Hi Alex! It really depends on Spring greenup but we just had a couple inches of snow today in SE MN....I would think 4/1 would be OK? Hard to say tho. Something to consider is that you have more time for frostseeding switch than applying Simazine...
TEMP QUESTION- When you say switch grass germinates in the mid to high 50’s, is that both morning and night time soil temperatures or just day time? Thank you.
Hi Isaac it sure us ok! You have to make sure that you hit it with 2-4D and Glyphosate when the weeds are several inches tall and in a good growing phase. Then plan on mowing...
Having trouble finding simazine with all of the shortages. You mention its not as essential as the other sprayings. To compensate I am considering 3 rounds of gly/24d, gly/24d and gly. Would broadcast the seed at time of the third and final spraying. Would you foresee any issues with this altered schedule? (pure gly no 2,4,D on third spraying). Thank you
Using an Earthway 2750 to frost seed switchgrass. I defintely am having issues with finding the proper setting for the 2750. Can someone please tell me what setting I should use?
Hey Jeff, with this years unusual spring in MN/WI (from cold to summer), does the 2 spray plan into frost seeded switch (gly/2-4d and then gly) need to change with soil temps being much higher earlier than normal?
Hey Jeff, frost seeded cave in rock today. Getting my boom sprayer (9 ft) ready. What number tee jets do I need for spraying simazine? Thanks for all the great strategy 👍🏻
Hi Fred that sounds great! We have such high winds here today I can't spray or seed. I may brushhog tho! I used the same setup that I do for spraying Glyphosate and 2-4D.
@@whitetailhabitatandhunting That was a joke. Of course they bed in switch. Why would people plant all this switch with pockets and not have deer bed in it? I've jumped huge bucks in switch fields on public land while pheasant hunting and I already have them bedding in mine after one year. Have a great day.
Thanks Jeff. What are your thoughts on using RC Tecumseh over CIR/RC Big Rock for drier/sandier soils? Sounds like John Komp is supposed to be getting it in April - just didn't want to be broadcasting it too late.
Hey Jeff, I have been watching for a year and half and did very basic brassica plot added winter rye to it as a cover because the dear destroyed it. Anyways I was able to able to spray plant the edges of the woods and a few open areas inside the parcel. Should I be concerned about the leafs blocking some of the soil or should I just frost seed and go. Worst case I can blow the leaves out and seed on top of the soil. I am not allowed to plant to agg field so I cleared out the sunniest portion of the woods and will be using the no till method. Hoping this works as it’s not an open agg field but grassy knoll with some browse. Have you done anything similar?
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I'm headed over to Richland center Thursday and guessing there may be a little green up. It was an old farm field I frost seeded
Can't you frost seed soft seed or does it need to be hard seed. I ask because I prepped my areas last summer and fall and fall planted them with beans and peas. Now it's ready for frost seeding....I think, lol.
Well, I frost seeded last week into a prepared area from last fall. My only issue was that I set my Earthway spreader on 1.5, walked pretty fast and turned the spreader fairly slow and was out of 4 lbs of seed in less than a quarter acre. What did I do wrong?
I’m planting Real World switchgrass this weekend. They recommend 5-6 lbs per acre and say that seeding heavier will not be helpful. Do you think I should plant at 8-10 lbs instead?
Hi Dan! You should definitely plant more like 8 to 10. The deer will not bed in it unless it's their only option...which isn't a good thing. So the switch us largely for screening, a downwind blocker for stand locations, access, adjacent to actual bedding cover, etc. Also, most of those "proprietary" blends have short and tall varieties. When they are planted light the stand becomes very thin and we have had to replace very large, 15 to 18 acre fields of those mixes. 5 to 6 pounds in theory sounds good because you don't have to spend as much money when instead you will end up with a thin stand that likely won't accomplish your needs.
I really appreciate you wanting me to come! As of right now I don't see getting down to MO any time soon. BUT, Dylan, Kevan or Joe can make plans to fly to you. I don't fly to anymore clients. Dylan is booked for the year but Joe and Kevan still have openings...
