  • Rocky Mountain National Park has multiple species of cutthroat trout. Ben and I set out to complete the cutthroat slam by catching a Greenback, Yellowstone, and Colorado River cutthroat trout all in a single day in three separate alpine lakes found in the park. We caught Greenbacks in Dream Lake, Yellowstone in Lake Haiyaha, and Colorado River in the Loch. The Loch was a pretty simple lake to fish with fish rising everywhere and super clear water. These fish tended to be 10 inches or less and were eating small midges. We caught all of our fish in this lake near where the lake outflow is. We then hiked to lake Haiyaha and were met with tougher conditions. There were less fish, the water was chalkier, and the fish were very smart. Luckily we were able to figure them out. I had great success fishing a tiny midge emerger behind a bead head nymph. The technique was to spot a cruising fish, cast well ahead, and let the flies sink into their vision. Very simple presentation. Ben and I both caught our biggest fish in this lake. I caught a 16" and a 15", and Ben caught a 15". This lake was extremely hard to navigate with no real trail and massive boulder fields. We then hiked to dream lake and started off by catching a few smaller greenbacks in the outflow creek. We then moved up to the lake and were able to easily sight cast to feeding fish. The midge emerger once again shined in this lake and all but one fish ate the midge. We hiked about 10 miles on the day. I would definitely recommend getting into the park before 6am so that you can beat traffic and find parking. It was super busy on the weekend. Also, make sure you bring bug spray. The mosquitos were terrible at times.
I hope this was helpful and can give people some information about the park and how to fish it. Good luck!

I liked the video, but the quiet dialog mixed with blaring music made me stop before the end.

The Loch is on Icy Brook, a tributary of Glacier Creek. The Colorado River is on the western side of the continental divide.

Great video. I am approaching 60. Which of the lakes that are under 2 miles from the trailhead do you recommend for a disabled veteran? You can delete your answer after I give a thumbs up. Thanks, Gary R.

Its hard to say. The fires have caused changes throughout the park and I havent fished the park in a while. I also tend to fish further lakes to avoid crowds. Dream lake is pretty accessible. No clue how the fishing would be right now.

@@patrickrowell1856 Thank you. Praying the ash and sludge runoff (which follow a massive forest fire) doesn't kill too many fish in the next three years. Blessings
