@@yank3305 Damn near everything since Free Riders/Colors. He's not boring in the sense that he's super stoic and serious and whatnot. He's boring in that he feels like a shallow version of Sonic. The jokes and quips are too constant and overly juvenile, his cockiness has been turned up to the point of sheer recklessness (Lost World), his heroic nature has been turned up to the point where he comes of as the embodiment of "And the Moral of the Story is" and is giving fairly lengthy speeches that sound REALLY forced. He feels, as I said, shallow, lacking the bits of depth and genuineness his character had back in the Adventure Era and even the Dark Ages at points.

What she doesn't understand is that everyone expresses emotions differently, not everyone cries, shows that they're sad through their body language or facial expressions, people grieve and process emotions differently than others. You and your friends compared Call Of Duty a good bit, but if the video she made used any character from Black Ops 2, her argument would completely fall flat. If she said Farid was boring, he's an Arabic agent that's being used by the government who was going to be forgotten either way, whether you try to shoot Menendez as Farid, or shoot Harper, and Farid sacrifices himself to save Chloe. Naked Snake did show emotion after he shot his mentor, you even see the white flowers turn red as he looks up into the sky, probably trying to process the emotions he's currently feeling in that situation. I could go all day, but that's enough from me.
I love Aiden Pierce, not just for his character but from my perspective his story of revenge is the only story (besides kratos) where he got his revenge and didn't think he shouldn't have not it or revenge wasn't the way to get justice for his niece's death. And he says word for word that "I actually real relieved like a ton of weight has been finally lifted off my shoulders. Like, I actually can breathe again." And that's why I love his character the most. (I may be slightly off on what Aiden said but close to it.)
Aiden's always been a weird character to me, never thought he was a bad character but there's some issue I have that I've never quite been able to put my finger on.
You can make any character funny,tragic or well developed in you care enough. Man, woman, cat, dog even aliens like in Mass Effect are amazingly well written. A character is only ever boring if you write them that way. Kratos at first glance appears to be boring but his characterisation doesn’t come from being vocal or expression it comes from his intention, his actions and how he approaches a situation.
4:17 Hot take, but I don't think Eve's character from Stellar Blade is really boring (at least to me). One thing I love in the game is that whenever she picks up a body core she normally always prays for their "soul" to return to mother sphere. But at a certain point in the game after you uncover the truth about what the androids really are, if you picking up body core she says something on the line that she doesn't feel like praying anymore, showing she starting to doubt mother sphere which leads to the final choice of the game.
She has a character arc of becoming more human and accepting the truth about Mother Sphere. It’s just that well fleshed out imo, it’s still decent tho.
Taking advantage of the fact that one of the examples of "bad protagonists" was Luke, I take the opportunity to say, I hate how the Internet flanderized Luke Skywalker as the protagonist, many believe that he is a character without personality or defects when, a large part of his history is full of defects and I think that he has a very good character arc and a very defined personality, he is not perfect.

Well yeah. Because usually with female characters the physical appearance is prioritized over their writing. "Is she hot? Yes? Then done, she's completed". Also it would seem that literally no one knows how the fuck to write women. Any character can be written good if you have passionate writters/team. example: stray. Its a cat game but you feel bad for the animal and its companion because its written good. Gender or race has nothing to do with it. You can make a game where you play as a pile of sh!t but if the writting is good then people will like the game. I think this relates to a video called "why you suck at writing men". It goes into detail about how some women struggle to understand how men tend to emote. The fact she sees the men mentioned as boring to her seems to lean into this.
Any character can be boring, their gender is irrelevant. It all comes down to writing. This is such a stupid take. Joel's and Kratos's stoicism adds to their characters. Joel literally carried the proof of his grief around with him for 20+ years in the form of the watch his daughter had fixed for him, which later marked her time of death. Kratos destroyed all of Greece and its pantheon because of how overcome he was by his anger and need for vengeance. Both did fucked up shit because they weren't in positions to properly handle their grief. Anakin was manipulated into killing his own wife, and almost his unborn children, because he was quick to get angry and he felt cheated (rightfully in my opinion, but I digress) by the Jedi council and Palpatine saw easy prey. Then, as Darth Vader, he killed his ex-master and brother, only to then turn on Palpatine for the sake of his son, finally fulfilling the prophecy that he would put an end to the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the force instead of leaving it in darkness. How is any of that boring? These are characters whose emotions lead to them going on insane rampages (Joel for the twenty years between the prologue and main plotline of TLOU, and even into the main game, Kratos decimating all of Greece and killing several Norse gods, and Anakin killing the sandpeople, and not just the men, but the women, and the children two. They were animals, and he slaughtered them like animals. HE HATED THEM!) But in all seriousness, I don't understand how anyone could look at male characters like the three examples above and think of them as anything other than morally gray complex characters created by their circumstances.

I love me my FromSoftware, but when the hell are going to play a character that has actual backstory, personality, and motives? Closest we got was Sekiro, but even then he is so held back by how toned down his personality, motives, and agency in the story is. He's basically no different from the blank slate MCs from the other FromSoftware games (Ashen ones, Tarnished, etc.) Lies of P and a lot Soulslikes also have this issue too. Pinnichio is so supposed to be an eccentric, youthful piece of crap, but in Lies of P his personality is toned down to non-existence. He doesn't even talk. I have no problem with stoicism (heck, Kratos is my favorite videogame MC) and blank slates, but these "characters" are getting way too prolific within the scene. Like, it's getting everywhere. It's no longer in shitty isekai slop, but also in my prestige FromSoftware games. I recommend playing "En Garde!" and "Hades" (1 & 2) because the MCs are actually a fun and charismatic characters for once.

41:26 the craziest part about bringing geralt into discussion is that in the books and games geralt is a character that feels a lot, and everytime he tries to shut himself off he literally becomes more involved. It's the first fucking thing in the books when he chooses lesser evil. The whole point is, that due to the fact that mutation changed him so much he's percived differently by the commoners and being called a mutant and hated everywhere he goes plus the fact that he encounters death everywhere amde him grow thick skin. It's not that the mutation made him unable to cry, but rather his experience shaped him to be who he is. It's commentery on sexism/general bigotry. It's crazy she run face first into deep writing about sexism in a male character and completly failed to understand any of it.
I feel both sides are giving extremely disingenuous arguments here, as much as "I cannot connect to the emotions of men who don't cry" is a dumb argument, I think the question of "Name 5 games with great stories that have a female protagonist" is an equally unfair argument to make especially when the notion that "it's probably a product of us not playing enough games" is dismissed or games like Detroit Become Human being considered cheating because theres multiple protagonists.
(Heres my 5 examples, Signalis, Silent Hill 3, The Last of Us 2, Celeste,Final Fantasy VI) it really felt as though both parties here weren't being fair to the other as to make their narrative right

Also it would seem that literally no one knows how the fuck to write women. Men don't know how to write women for obvious reasons, and women either write a self insert character, write a Mary Su, or they write a character that only women would be able to relate to, and since the majority of gamers are men, that means almost no one is going to like the character.

Any character can be written good if you have passionate writters/team. example: stray. Its a cat game but you feel bad for the animal and its companion because its written good. Gender or race has nothing to do with it. You can make a game where you play as a pile of sh!t but if the writting is good then people will like the game. (Intermission/Side note: this woman is just another woke goofy who only dislikes games with straight male characters) I think games with female protagonist are equally as fun if written correctly.

It goes into detail about how some women struggle to understand how men tend to emote. The fact she sees the men mentioned as boring to her seems to lean into this.
Any character can be boring, their gender is irrelevant. It all comes down to writing. This is such a stupid take. Joel's and Kratos's stoicism adds to their characters. Joel literally carried the proof of his grief around with him for 20+ years in the form of the watch his daughter had fixed for him, which later marked her time of death. Kratos destroyed all of Greece and its pantheon because of how overcome he was by his anger and need for vengeance. Both did fucked up shit because they weren't in positions to properly handle their grief. Anakin was manipulated into killing his own wife, and almost his unborn children, because he was quick to get angry and he felt cheated (rightfully in my opinion, but I digress) by the Jedi council and Palpatine saw easy prey. Then, as Darth Vader, he killed his ex-master and brother, only to then turn on Palpatine for the sake of his son, finally fulfilling the prophecy that he would put an end to the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the force instead of leaving it in darkness. How is any of that boring? These are characters whose emotions lead to them going on insane rampages (Joel for the twenty years between the prologue and main plotline of TLOU, and even into the main game, Kratos decimating all of Greece and killing several Norse gods, and Anakin killing the sandpeople, and not just the men, but the women, and the children two. They were animals, and he slaughtered them like animals. HE HATED THEM!) But in all seriousness, I don't understand how anyone could look at male characters like the three examples above and think of them as anything other than morally gray complex characters created by their circumstances.
I love Life is Strange but it's because of people like this that makes feel bad for liking it

I rly only play mortal kombat consistently and while I do find some of the guys kinda boring most are hella cool same with the girls, although I normally lead to characters who aren’t the main ones, for instance I am more of a fan of baraka and havik compared to scorpion and subzero

I love me my FromSoftware, but when the hell are going to play a character that has actual backstory, personality, and motives?
Closest we got was Sekiro, but even then he is so held back by how toned down his personality, motives, and agency in the story is. He's basically no different from the blank slate MCs from the other FromSoftware games (Ashen ones, Tarnished, etc.)
Lies of P and a lot Soulslikes also have this issue too.
Pinnichio is so supposed to be an eccentric, youthful piece of crap, but in Lies of P his personality is toned down to non-existence. He doesn't even talk.
I have no problem with stoicism (heck, Kratos is my favorite videogame MC) and blank slates, but these "characters" are getting way too prolific within the scene. Like, it's getting everywhere. It's no longer in shitty isekai slop, but also in my prestige FromSoftware games.
I recommend playing "En Garde!" and "Hades" (1 & 2) because the MCs are actually a fun and charismatic characters for once.
Rpgs dont need that and the lore is well established for the most part
