  • Lighting terms can be confusing. In this video, David Geldart of Lumicrest Lighting Solutions demystifies the terms "PAR" and "MR" and explains the numbers behind the names "PAR 38" and "MR16".

    Thank you!!
Your video is the only good thing that has happened so far today, in my search for Halogen PAR 20 50 W Range Hood Lights...seems they don't make them anymore!
At least now, I know what the terms mean!

Great concise and to the point. But note that PAR alean means Photosynthetic Active Range (400-700nm)

PAR is also "Photosynthetically active radiation". These PAR values give you a general idea of how much light can actually be used by a plant

That measuring system is probably no more obscure than saying my sister lives "2 tenths of a mile" down the street from me.
    .
I think that particular measuring of 8ths, may have been a feature of an ancient patent; something left over from days of light bulb development and the secrets associated with product development.
    .
You could look it up, David Geldart; get your secretary to find out for you on her weekend.
Thanks for posting this interesting video.
    .
0:15 eveything is just a light bulb: I had forgotten that there are still folk around like that, very funny !

    Thanks. 1 par = 1/8 in. Each inch is 8 pars. 4-3/4 in = 38 pars

Well, "par" means Parabolic Anodized Reflector actually ... The dimensions are not pars.
