    I've had to do them as a student - and I've assigned them as a professor. I find value in both experiences. I suppose if you have an instructor who gives way too many assignments - the discussion board may be overboard! It's important to hear from varied lenses on topics. Learning should be more than just checking boxes - but - it has become that in many ways. And yes - you can tell which students have original thoughts and have interesting perspectives on the material -- and which students haven't read much of anything and are simple in thought on the topic. I teach Biology - the discussion board is where I can bring "real life" into the chapter topics -- such as looking into HeLa cells and The Right to Try per medical treatments...topics interesting to students but not necessarily mentioned (at least in detail) in a textbook. Annnnnyway...

    Replies are the worst 🤣 I have the same strategy: pick a sentence or point and focus on that. Like you said, no matter how jumbled a response, it’s a fool proof method! My only issue with discussion posts/replies is how long it takes me - I have a strategy, but it’s hard to walk away when I feel like my point isn’t crystal clear. In my first year of grad school and know I’ll have to get over that soon bc burnout is a thing! Tips for how to avoid grad school burnout? Just a thought. Thanks for the advice!🙋🏽‍♀️

      Yes. Burnout is real. I tried to remember the goal was passing and not getting a 4.0. Making time for myself helped too. Good luck out there!!

      Wow, I’m definitely in the same place! I have trouble with the not over thinking it part. I’m such a slow reader and a slow writer. It takes time for me to just absorb the information, then figuring out how to translate my thoughts into writing in some coherent way is a whole other process. Not sure how anyone does grad school while working full time!!

    One of the craziest things I've encountered in a discussion board post was someone responding to a post and asking me how old I was. She then proceeded to answer my post as if I was "too young to understand." Turns out, she's 54 and I am turning 56. If she thought I was a "yung'in" she was sadly mistaken.

    Great video not just for online classes, but for those classes where students sit like Easter Island statues, hoping they won't get called on. Also, in a classroom, those students who like to talk can take over a discussion; introverts (like me) find it exhausting to try to add their thoughts. They're much more likely to contribute to an online discussion where they have time to consider their responses.

    Royce, thanks for the video! I also pull out a sentence or thought to focus my replies on, it helps to keep from just repeating things back to the original author. I am sad to say that I haven't come across any super crazy stuff, but I have certainly had fellow students completely misinterpret a prompt or assignment. I guess the ones I see the most often are the logical fallacies that some people append to historical events or make wild conjectures as to motivations, especially in my Asia or China-focused classes.

    Hey thanks so much. I'm gonna do a search on your page - but wanted to flag : do you have something talking about how to cite in the discussion post? I've been pulling from different resources but hope you have one - your point of view really helps me on this particular topic. Would love your input on discussion post citing and how you go about doing your citations for your weekly assignments. Thanks for being awesome.

    • @RoyceMorris
      @RoyceMorris  4 года назад

      Every class usually has a citation style that you are supposed to use. APA, MLA, Chicago are all examples. My school uses Turabian, which is a form of Chicago style. Every style should have a style manual. In the manual it tells you how to cite almost anything. Universities will also usually have resources for their preferred style of citation available online. As for citing in a discussion board, it's pretty much the same as writing a paper. If you are doing the citations in parenthesis than it would be exactly the same as a paper. If you are doing footnotes it just takes a little formatting, but you can use those too.
      Does that answer your question?
