The best question a doctor ever asked me was, "do you have sex with men, women, or a little of both?" I hadn't come out yet, but that question let me know it was safe to do so. And then we didn't waste time with discussions about pregnancy tests and condom use with men. My care was tailored to ME. You would not believe how many doctors discriminate against LGBTQ people, and if you live in an area where you don't have a lot of choice in who your doctor is, it can be scary and dangerous to come out to a doctor.
@@thewriter2634 You know it's not an "argument" right. These reasons are only given because close minded people force lgbtq+ people to legitimize their existence. Guess what, their existence is valid no matter what and not something to be argued about or to be justified.
It's sad that it's rare. My sister is married to a woman and it happened several times that doctors asked her if she was sexually active (she said yes,) ask her what birth control method she was using (none) and if she actually want to conceive right now (no at the time - her wife is currently pregnant though) and then was lectured for it!

I accidentally came out as trans to my doc. She's helped me with getting blood draws, called me by my name, her nurses have helped me with my shots... I really appreciate her.
@Hazy trans: likely referring to transgender: “denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.” (Copied off safari)
Telling your doc you're asexual is usually a fun trip through a physical investigation of what's wrong with you to blood tests to find out why you don't want to bone people to a Very Serious conversation about how you need to see a therapist because sex is vital to a healthy life. Just... love it so much.
this is exactly why I'm afraid to tell my docter that I'm ace :/ i haven't had them ask me anything related to that so far though.... but I'm turning 18 next year so they may bring it up. I don't know what I'll say.
@@warriorcatkitty You're in a good place in a sense, because you know you're ace and that there's nothing wrong with you (I didn't have this knowledge back in the day, because no one knew what an asexual was.) It sucks to get pathologized--it's embarassing and uncomfortable and it takes up time you could be using to address your actual medical concerns--but you'll ultimately be okay. Just tell your doc and see how they react. The worst case is that you'll find out your doctor isn't the right fit for you. Best case is they'll be great about it. Probably they'll be somewhere between. ♥ Hang in there.
Refuse the tests. Don't let ANYONE discriminate you. Granted, the first time I heard about asexuality, I was confused too. It was as if someone had told me they don't like food. No sweets, okay. Dislike spicy foods, sure. But... generally don't enjoy eating? However, sex is NOT vital, so your doctor has no right to "investigate" unless you explicitly ask them to do so. I have long since come to realize that asexuality is just as natural, though maybe not as common a variation as homo- and bisexuality. Just tell your doc to pretty please educate themselves first and then start taking care of what parts of your health may be of real concern.

I know it's a joke but asking a doctor like a random one can tell you the problem and when he says go to your doctor he means the doctor who treats you since he dosen't have an appointment to you

I'm glad that you're so open and fine with patients being a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It's so nerve-racking and scary coming out to people, and you always have to make sure that it's safe to come out, so when someone's supportive it's really heartwarming and a lot more comfortable being around them. I hate how we have to be so wary. I hate how people despise us.
I wish every doctor was as cool as you, I'd feel totally comfortable coming out to you. It's truly shocking how many people nowadays, including some doctors, still judge people's sexuality or gender.
I remember the first time a doctor asked me about my sexuality. I told them I am bi, and I automatically got a super judgy conversation about how they weren’t sure if I was being honest about only having one partner. “We’ve just seen so much crazy stuff with bisexuals.” Then they made me pay $400 for “mandatory STD screening”. When I asked why, they said it was company policy for bisexual people (or basically anyone who wasn’t straight). Of course, this wasn’t disclosed before my exam with a doctor who was way too rapey to be working with people with vaginas. Since then, I’ve made sure to screen my medical team members before I even set up the first appointment.

Doctor Mike I came out to my Primary Care as genderqueer/nonbinary and asked for a breast reduction. He’s been incredibly supportive and referred me to a local and well respected plastic surgeon. 😊
@@sandyg4646 Please consider that cis people (not trans) also request and are given breast reductions, without seeing a doctor for an incredibly long time (as many people imply that trans individuals need to). If someone wants a change to their body because it's causing pain or discomfort, I do not particularily see the reason its so bad.
@@ev_rlasting There is a thing called Body integrity disorder in which a person can have a strange fixation on wanting a missing limb. Should we then just cut of their arm and leg to alleviate their discomfort? There is a difference between reducing someone breast / cutting them off due to a physical medical problem, - such as tumours, or spinal cord issues - vs cutting them off due to a mental condition that was likely not extensively explored OR could very well debilitate over time. I read a story of someone who knew a 16 year old girl who was convinced she was trans. She was approved for a mastectomy after 1-2 visits to the doctor. Weeks after her breasts were removed, she came back to said clinic begging for her breasts back as she realized she wasn't trans. And you REALLY think approving a surgery to take away breast tissue for a mental condition not properly explored is ethical?
@@sandyg4646 I didn't say that at all, I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth. Cosmetic breast reductions exist and are accepted in society. Gender criticals only take issue when it involves trans people having autonomy over their own bodies. For the record your argument's logic implies you don't believe any cosmetic surgery or permanent cosmetic treatment should exist, along with tattoos and other body mods. You could argue all are caused by body dysmorphia, other self image issues or self harm. But nobody argued that. Because our autonomy is only questioned when we are trans. Additionally, if you don't have a doctorate yourself (or even if you do- you've never MET this person) I'm confused as to why you immediately assume to "know better" about a patient than their own doctor
@@ev_rlasting "I didn't say that at all, I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth." I didn't say you did. I said it to illustrate a point. As to the rest of your comment: First of all if you're referring to the cutting off of breasts as "cosmetic" , you're only further invalidating it as a medical need. Nice going. Second, in no way did my comment argue against tattoos or any cosmetic alteration. What I argued against is the practice of mutilating someone's body after they've had only ONE visit to the doctor and no extensive history of therapeutic counseling to support that getting a breast reduction or mastectomy is the best course of action for that individual. Same as you wouldn't cut off a person's arm just cause they asked for it, you don't cut off a person's breasts just cus they asked for it. " I'm confused as to why you immediately assume to "know better" about a patient than their own doctor" It doesn't take a being a doctor to know what is ethical and what isn't. The practice of cutting off breasts or doing bottom surgery on someone who had only ONE or TWO visits to the doctor about their GD, is WHOLY unethical.

As a gay man (in a rural area), I've found it can be a challenge to navigate healthcare providers. Years ago I had a doctor ask if I was married. I told him no (marriage equality wasn't law yet), and he told me I should consider it because married men live longer, healthier lives. I think I blinked hard a couple of times before responding, "well, as soon as it's legal for me to marry my boyfriend of ten years, I'll fill that prescription." Then he blinked hard a few times and asked me when I had my last HIV test. He started by making an assumption about my sexual orientation and then he made an assumption about my sex life. I never went back.
@steven milstead He was offended because when he told the doctor that he was gay his first reaction was that he certainly have a dangerous sexual life. Its wrong and a mindset from the past.
@steven milstead They do it like heterosexual guys And the fact that the doc automatiquely think that he's gay he's having unprotected sex he's homophobic.
@steven milstead Imagine being offended because someone told you that he's offended... Not everything is "phobic" or "ism" if you're not stupid. @Rexxy Actually that’s completely wrong, as a medical student myself, doctors are not interested in normalcy, we’re interested in maintaining optimal health for our patients. The question of your personal needs is irrelevant because in medicine it’s not like retail work, that patient is not always right, in fact most times they’re wrong hence the reason why we’re the doctors and your not. Also psychology is literally a discipline that investigates the human psyche and simultaneously plays a role in treating disorders of the mind. The amount of irrationality in this comment on staggering. Also to yourself and the original comment, I feel you should do some actual reading into polyamory, because if you did you would realise that from an evolutionary biological standpoint, polyamory is an inherently unstable form of relationships, so much to the point that in every biological system they exist in, all of those systems have incredibly high levels of ultra violence which all stems from these types relationships, and there’s plenty of biological literature on this topic for you to see for yourself. There’s a reason why natural selection favoured monogamous relationship types because the are completely compatible and suitable in evolutionary terms. It’s the primary reason why polyamory feels unnatural and wrong, because it’s not beneficial to society. It’s just a silly trend today from people simply afraid of committment

He saw on my file that I had been taking the pill for about 8 years and asked me if I needed a refill or if I wanted to wait for "the next boyfriend". I completely froze and just blurred "Ahem no thanks. Let's just say I don't need it with girls." And that's the story of how I came out to my doctor.
Step 1: Be 5'10'' or 5'11'' tall
Step 2: Say you're 6 foot tall.
Step 3: Repeat until you believe it yourself and get it printed in your passport/visa.

The fact that this is such a rare case is saddening🥺

Telling your doc you're asexual is usually a fun trip through a physical investigation of what's wrong with you to blood tests to find out why you don't want to bone people to a Very Serious conversation about how you need to see a therapist because sex is vital to a healthy life. Just... love it so much.
I had a very similar experience, my doctor also told me “you’ll grow out of it”….
Oh my god that sounds awful

this is exactly why I'm afraid to tell my docter that I'm ace :/
i haven't had them ask me anything related to that so far though.... but I'm turning 18 next year so they may bring it up.

Oh, my God. That's horrible. I hope you have a different doctor now. NO doctor should ever treat a patient that way.

I've always heard that it's called "Chicken pox" because it looks like a chicken pecked at you thus pocking(pitting) your skin. This explanation may or may not be accurate but it sounds plausible.
I heard it was because when you pluck a chicken's feathers, it raises the skin, thus looking like pox.
in THE NETHERLANDS we actually say chicken skin, because of that (instead of goose bumps) :)
I heard it was because of chicken feather bumps

I wish mike was my doctor, I love his personality, he’s respectful, kind, and seems like a really good person, it’s a shame I can’t have him for my appointments and such, he deserves his place in this world, he’s earned it.
Doctor Mike I came out to my Primary Care as genderqueer/nonbinary and asked for a breast reduction. He’s been incredibly supportive and referred me to a local and well respected plastic surgeon. 😊
wait....a breast reduction? he gave you a recommendation for a breast reduction after how many visits?
And you REALLY think approving a surgery to take
away breast tissue for a mental condition not properly explored is ethical?
@@ev_rlasting "I didn't say that at all, I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth."
I didn't say you did. I said it to illustrate a point.
As to the rest of your comment:
First of all if you're referring to the cutting off of breasts as "cosmetic" , you're only further invalidating it as a medical need.
" I'm confused as to why you immediately assume to "know better" about a patient than their own doctor"
It doesn't take a being a doctor to know what is ethical and what isn't.

@steven milstead They do it like heterosexual guys
And the fact that the doc automatiquely think that he's gay he's having unprotected sex he's homophobic.
@steven milstead Imagine being offended because someone told you that he's offended...
Not everything is "phobic" or "ism" if you're not stupid. If the first thing you say to someone who told you is gay is "I think you have a dangerous sexuality" its homophobic.
He didn't even explain to him why he think that or else..
My mom (gynecologist/sexologist) and i (just her lgbtq+ kid lmao) were talking about respectful ways to approach the subject of sexuality, and we came up with "do you have penetrative sex or not?", and then asking them to elaborate if necessary. It is the best way we came up with without immediately assuming someone's sexual orientation or gender identity!
this is a great idea! as a medical student i've been thinking about this so thank you for bringing this up
"what is your sexuality?"- also a viable option
yeah, but then you still don't know if the person could be pregnant, rule out certain STDs or whatever. Just straight up ask: What's your sexuality?
Or just ask them what they're sexual preference is. Seems kind of a roundabout way to get to the same answer.

I'm polyamorous and I got so many jugment out of that from healthcare professionnal. Everyone consents, everyone stays protected, what more do you want?
They want "nOrMaLcY"
Seriously: the amount of Doctors I have met who believe it is their job to make their patients normal (physically and behaviourally) is soulcrushing.
Most don't care about your personal needs, what is right for you and that you (and your partners) aren't harming anyone.
It's what kept me from going into psychology, because I didn't want to be beholden to a bunch of old farts who think psychology is about "fixing" everything that is unusual about a person.
@@amandaforrester7636 No pressure Luv, but would you be willing to say more on what happened to you? I've never heard anything like that before about the poly community, and I'm interested.
@@sophiarobbins7602 Neither of your statements are true. Many doctors do take it upon themselves to make their patients "normal" even if you haven't seen it that doesn't make it untrue. Your other statement is just so wrong evolution clearly supports polyamory in most animal species(or at least mammals) because it has the highest chance of success in yielding offspring and furthering the species. If you don't believe me just look up "What percentage of animals are polyamorous" or something similar and I'm sure you'll get results.

Hey, speaking about the expiration date on food (I have a degree on food science), as long as the food smells, tastes, and looks good, you can have it.
Expiration dates are for guaranteeing nutrient content and that they probably won’t spoil before that date.
But if after that date, it’s still good, then you can surely have it and it won’t represent any greater risk for your health than it did before the exp. date. :)

I came out to my doctor as trans because my family hasn't been great (been 8 years since I came out to them and they haven't come around despite years of several different medical professionals' diagnoses of me having gender dysphoria and validating my lived experience). She said "Yeah, I had an inkling" and asked me what name and pronouns I preferred to go by, as well as told me it would only take a minute after the checkup if I wanted to change my name and recognized gender (separate from where they need to indicate sex, like an additional thing). She was so great about it that I think I might go back to her when I plan to start HRT and surgery.

Like yea I hug my mom, dad and sister, but everyone is so stressed these days! It almost feels like there is no time anymore for real, long, loving and comforting hugs. I feel you bro...my country is also not very tolerant with LGBT ppl and it's always struggle to be around ppl like this...
As a Hungarian (I don’t live there anymore) I can only imagine the pain my fellow LGBT people feel, but in the UK it’s a bit better, but recently there’s been a comeback of conversion therapy for transgender people only which sets us back so many years and I just don’t understand why the UK is doing this, so idiotic
@@pannajohns5255 Perhaps they want to treat Gender Dysphoria... then maybe "trans" and "non-binary" people etc will feel a lot better about themselves. Not tryna be transphobic or anything but a lot of them do suffer from this and I feel like it goes so unrecognised.
@@circusmice No they don’t, the UK bringing back conversion therapy has no good intentions other than erasing transgender people and dehumanising them. Boris Johnson since March has been very outspoken about his outrage towards transgender people in the Olympics, JK Rowling, a very famous UK author, is transphobic and has a lot of influence in the public, and the news (especially tabloids) have also been spreading transphobic and transgender related news in which trans people are purposely put in a bad light, further negatively stereotyping transgender people and spreading misinformation about them. If they actually had any intentions of helping transgender people in making them feel more comfortable in their body they would set up and provide them a reliable and safe system that protects their rights and make them feel welcomed, they wouldn’t bring back conversion therapy, which in history as many people know has destroyed and broke many innocent lives. But he asked for my new name, he asked pronouns, he wanted to know what I wanted to do, if anything, for transition. I was so relieved
How wonderful for you to have an accepting doctor!
Coming out to your doctor can be difficult when you live in a conservative state, and especially if you aren't out to your family. I've told my OBGYN that I'm bisexual because I trusted her and it was important info for something. But most of my other doctors I just wouldn't feel safe telling here in Texas. It is hard to know what your doctor's views are on LGBTQ issues, and even just asking what they think makes it clear that there is a reason you want to know.
Same, I live in Texas and I’m also bi, and I feel uncomfortable talking about it because of how people react.
I have started telling doctors I'm straight because every time I was honest about my sexuality, I was discriminated against.
I told a Dr. he immediately started telling me I probably had HIV or AIDS. I was like “whoa whoa… I told you I’m practically zero active.” He was like. “You can get it even kissing. I feel like we need to do a full STI panel and HIV test”. He was physically bothered by my answer to him. He even kept his hand over his mouth. I was like. Fine. But you are not listening to me. He did an insane battery of tests, blood panels etc etc. everything came back negative of course. And he never called me back to work on my sinus infection. Needless to say. Fk that dude. Yes I’m here in Texas. Sad to see such a young Dr. not know how HIV works. Does he accuse all his patients of HIV when they come in for a bad sinus infection? They all kiss someone, they all have sex. I bet not.
