I think it's one of the things that makes Ben Solo/Kylo Ren an interesting and unique character especially compared to Anakin/Darth Vader, which is that he's trying so hard to embrace the dark side but the light within him just keeping shining brighter and brighter, Adam Driver did an amazing job at showing that in the sequels!
Couldn’t agree more! So many characters are fighting to keep their darkness at bay. Ben is the exact opposite, chasing darkness because his past experiences have convinced him that that is his destiny. He is fighting to fill the shoes he was never meant to fill. Luckily, he had just enough of his father’s heart in him...
very well said. But I think also that his destiny was more tragic than Anakin's because Anakin chose the dark side. Ben fought it for 23 years even if it was not only his own darkness.
To be honest, I'm kinda glad that DLF is still reminding fans that Ben is a victim who was dragged to the Dark Side kicking and screaming. I'm still of the opinion that Ben will be back, and things like this help to lay the groundwork.

Grogu sleeps in front of the TV and Rey says this... Rey: Papa? Ben: Huh? Me? Papa? Rey: Isn't it way past Grogu's bed time since the TV has been keeping him busy all this time. Ben: I believe so and... Rey: Let's put him to bed. So we can practice for when we...hopefully have our baby. Ben: No we will have our baby. Rey: Hope gives options. Ben: No hope gives us an image of what we want. Rey: Isn't it enough? Ben: Yes but it's not enough to just hope and say it in words, you have to believe in it not just say it. And I believe that you will be conceive a child. We'll go through that journey together hearing it's heartbeat, feeling the kick, hearing her cry and then giggle and see her grow up. The force is on our side, and there is a higher power that is watching you and me. Ok Mama. Rey: (Chuckles) Let's put Grogu to bed Papa. Ben: (Chuckles) Papa.
Yes! It's in the novel Bloodlines by Claudia Gray as well. Ben didn't know Vader was his grandfather until the information was outed publicly at a Senate gathering on Hosnian Prime. Leia was forced to admit her true parentage, and afterward she went to her private quarters and recorded a message for him, explaining why she never told him. It must have been a heartbreaking thing to hear at age 23. Great video, man, as usual! Love your analyis and insight.
Even despite everything he went through Ben is a pretty strong guy. He's a tough cookie. He's a lot more smarter and clever and self sufficient then he even gives himself credit for. Maybe someday he'll have another chance to bring out the best of himself.
In my head, Ben idolized Vader because Luke saw good in Vader, but not in Ben. Maybe becoming like Vader presented Ben with a false sense of control? Ben's got such an interesting mind, I don't even know where to start X)
I don’t know that it makes sense for that to be the root of his admiration, but it certainly could have played a role in deepening Ben’s frustration and anger toward Luke during and/or after his turn!
You know I always saw Ben's idolizing Vader his version of sticking two middle fingers to his family. Outside of Grey's Bloodline book. It's been implied that Ben was more or less abandoned by his parents who were too busy and impatient to deal with a (difficult) child. They couldn't bother to deal with him and passed him onto Luke, who has himself been temperamental and cranky at times. Ben's acting out was just a reaction to being rejected and having a heavy burden on him and yes Palpy filling his head with poison. So if he is told he is bad (or a monster like in TLJ) then he might as well go whole hog and emulate his grandfather one of the biggest monsters the galaxy ever produced.

Off topic but kind of relevant: I currently have a new scrapbook and one of the things I’ll be doing is putting together half a section dedicated to Ben Solo and his Grandpapa Anakin. Now yes we are being given information that many of us already know but it still needs to be said and not every understands what he’s really gone through growing up.
