When I was a teenager in the 60s, I had a friend who was an exceptional drummer, the best drummer in the circle of bands I was in and he said Ringo was the best drummer in the world.

Agreed. I've listened to plenty of out-takes of the Beatles and while John, Paul, and George often make mistakes, Ringo is RIGHT THERE. Perfect every time...no matter how high he might have been.

According to Rolling Stone magazine he is the 14th best rock drummer in the world. Only being beat out by drummers such as Charlie Watts (former jazz drummer), Stewart Copeland (grew up in the Middle East and brought that influence), Mitch Michell (of Jimi Hendrix Experience), Gene Krupa (jazz/rock drummer), Hal Blaine (recorded for the Beach Boys), Keith Moon The Who), and John Bonham (Led Zep). Pretty damn good company to be in.

Ringo played from the heart. As a musician for years, I can appreciate having a drummer that cannot only play with his heart but fill in as a member of the band, rather than playing with/behind/under the rest of the band. Ringo is literally the greatest drummer in the world.
Music is experienced through percussion, it is what gives weight and daint to a song. Ringo could express anything, and gave the songs the magic they had. Paul John and George are the worlds greatest songwriters

Ringo was so bad George Martin hired Benard purty to re record the drums because of Ringo not keeping the timing down. Bernard is a great drummer Back in the 60s the beach boys the stones and yes even the beatles has studio musician recording the albums Paul and John sang but that's not them on the records playing. John lennon said the Beatles were a myth what he meant was they were beginner level musicians so song writers wrote music for the Beatles. I honestly believe they only started writing there own stuff after revolver
They only got better music wise when Paul was replaced by Billy Shears. Billy was a trained studio musician plays horns piano learned to play left handed Billy is by far my favorite beatle

@@joeymorvant161 well think about it dude.. the elements of the Beatles’ music all consisted of their own individual sound, and when combined, it created what is known and beloved by many as “The Beatles” sound. Ringo wasn’t very technical, and that was the point. He did not care to be excessive and do things such as drum soloing. Out of all Beatles songs, the only one where he did a drum solo was the last Beatles song ever recorded, “The End”, off the Abbey Road album. The funny thing is, he was TRICKED into doing it by the others, he did NOT want to. He did not like to show off even though he for sure could hold his own.. not to mention the sheer simplicity of his drumming in most all Beatles songs, which made them relatively easy to play on drums, which in turn, inspired many people for generations to pick up the drums, because like I said, the songs weren’t too hard to play. Many drummers who are successful nowadays, and even long ago, had their start because Ringo inspired them to pick up the sticks, and usually kept a 4 to the floor type beat that was steady but effective, making it easier for beginners, and giving The Beatles the “Beat” factor in their music, also giving them their overall
sound. But don’t get me wrong, some songs can be difficult to play.. So like I said before, each Beatle had their own role in the band. John Lennon, with his rhythm guitar playing that always had that background supporting factor in their music. Paul McCartney with his melodic bass lines that added a lot of heart, soul, and warmth to their songs, George Harrison with his lead guitar playing that added all of the extra elements to their music, and finally, Ringo who blended all the individual elements together, keeping it simple, But NEVER missing a beat, keeping them in sync, providing THE BACKBONE.

I've met John Lennon and spent 3 hours performing on stage while he watched. His image is what he wanted it to be. My synopsis is that he was a super inquisitive observer of the world. Everything interested and intrigued him. He was watching my band and it was obvious that music was his life. Technically a nervous perpetual nicotine and caffeine addict. Yoko said he was in the best mood she'd ever seen him in. One thing he said was "All musicians are my friends" then he bowed, said he come back but never did. This was in Tokyo. Aug 6, 1979

You should listen to Donovan's interpretation of the song. Paul came to his house one time asking for help with one line. Donovan walked off into his room and came up with the line "Sky of blue and sea of green". Donovan claims that this song isn't just a kid's song, but a story of a Beatle's life as they were constantly under the heat of public exposure, in which they would often see themselves metaphorically together alone in a submarine. Keep in mind this song was written during the times they decided to stop touring.
Ringo brought so much to the Beatles. I can’t imagine anyone else as unique, spot on and dynamic. He brought out such a great beat to everything. Very versatile yet stable. It’s hard to explain. He knew when to kick back and he knew when to blow everyone away. It wasn’t about speed, it was more subtle, yet powerful like a famous lead guitar solo drenched in character that all the other members had as well. To me, no one member was any better than the other. It had to be just them as a unit or it wouldn’t have been as great.
Ringo was lucky. He blew nobody away, except me. I'm blown away by the fact that he played basic, yet people treat him like he was Keith Moon, John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Ian Pace. The Beatles were great, but Ringo stunk.
I love the way John praises Ringo at the beginning, it should be enough to some idiots who think Ringo is a bad drummer and was just lucky to make them change their minds. Ringo is the best!!! And if John was still around he would have praised him even more that Ringo is the best.

I had always heard growing up...(mid to late 70's), that 'Yellow Submarine', had to do with barbiturates. Downers as they called them back in the day. Of course...absolutely no source for this, other than word of mouth when I was a kid. But yeah...that is what I had always heard. Great song. Love Ringo. Love The Beatles. 👍☀️👍
The first time I encountered Yellow Submarine was when I was in grade school. I was looking through my music book and saw Yellow Submarine and under it was "Folk Song". I was baffled for I have never heard of this "folk song" before. I learned it and kept singing it for a few years until I got into the Beatles. Then I was so surprised that the Beatles sang that song, I felt like my whole life was a lie. DAMN THAT MUSIC BOOK.
We love Ringo, he was talented. People say he was lucky when the Beatles themselves asked him to be in the band. That says a lot. Sir Paul has always stated how brilliant he thinks Ringo is.

Firstly, as a uniquely-identifiable drummer, Ringo has a style that brilliantly balances accompanist and commanding beat-master. Secondly, on the subject of "Yellow Submarine", I think it may have originated as "Yell out something mean" with Paul playing to John's cruel streak. Anyone here agree? Either way, it was a children's song perfectly suited to Ringo's cultivated image.

I once asked a fellow Beatles fan, out of the blue really, why a yellow submarine anyway.So I Wiki`d it and come to find out, they did try different colors for the song but just decided yellow fit in the best for whatever reason. When I hear the song now I sing, a red submarine, a green submarine, a purple submarine. The French version is a green submarine, according to Wikipedia.
Many thanks for this lovely video giving a well deserved hats-off to the talented Ringo. Yellow Submarine was the first Beatles song I heard as a child. My dad would play music on the old 1970s record player living in the basement while my brother and I roller-skated around like maniacs. Needless to say, the song (and Ringo) have fond places in my heart.
Ringo totally made me become a drummer, before I got super into the Beatles I was only into mallet percussion, always finding drums to just be noise. When I got super into The Beatles a few years back, he totally changed the way I saw them. I don’t even play mallets anymore, just drumming. The way he grooved, and drew everyone to him when he was in the back sitting rather than standing and shaking with a guitar. The way he flicked his wrist to player the hi-hat always made me want to be him. I can’t even hit a hi-hat straight on anymore, I have to flick my wrist and groove it it feels wrong.
Yellow is the stage of evolution that our planet is currently at which is 3rd density. The yellow submarine is under the sea of "green". Green is the color of 4th density which is the next stage of evolution of our planet. The sky of "blue" is above the green sea which means "blue" is 5th density. Planets throughout the universe will illuminate a specific color which signals the stage of evolution that it's currently at and we're at yellow thus we all live in a "yellow" submarine. Coldplay has a song called "yellow" so they understand what yellow means like the Beatles did.

As far as I'm concerned, Ringo being the Drummer God of rock is an indisputable fact. Beyond that he's an amazing human being. Paul and George were understandably devastated when John was taken from us but it was Ringo who rushed to be there for John's family.

Great stuff Holly Hobs! Keep it up. I see/hear what you mean about Ringo and "A Day In The Life". Ringo's drumming sometimes plays counterpoint and sometimes plays *with* John's singing-- accompanying and emphasizing.
At the time of the opening clip with John, Ringo was more popular (in the middle of a streak of 7 consecutive top tens). His only problem was that he was never a prolific writer & dependent on (to paraphrase) help from his friends. That’s why “Ringo” is such a perfect pop-rock LP.

Redo your research, Yellow Submarine was written by five people: John, Paul, George, Ringo and Donovan. Paul McCartney always gets stuck on lyrics and asks others for help. Mal Evans helped Paul write "Fixing A Hole".
Also, Brian Jones was the only Rolling Stone on Yellow Submarine.

John said, "Pete was a beter drummer. Ringo was a better Beatle." i think John underestimated Ringo. I am a percussionist myself and Ringo's drumming has always been outstanding. It took me awhile to learn his drum solo from Abbey Road, and if you listen to the remastered CD's - or even the regular CD's - you'll realize what a great drummer he is.

Many years ago a friend was telling me that he walked into the Grapes pub in Mathew Street in Liverpool. I'm sure you're aware that the famous Cavern Club was in Mathew Street. Anyway, this was during the Mathew Street Festival (which sadly is no more). He walked into the pub to find about 30 Japanese people all singing "Yellow Submarine". Just a tad surreal!
John is totally right, just because Ringo wasn’t a songwriter(he had several #1 hits that he wrote or co-wrote) he was thought of as less of a contributor. The only people who think Ringo is lesser Beatle are those who are too stupid to understand how much he contributed on the fly, mind you, Ringo and George had about 1/2 of an hour to create the drum and guitar parts-fills and solos- when they went to record.

Once again you nailed it...the detractors are just repeating what they’ve heard & they think it makes them sound cool. Ringo didn’t like flashy solos. George felt the same way about over the top guitar solos. All the truly great musicians respect him. Paul consistently names him as his all time favorite drummer.

Before I started listening to the Beatles I had the misconception that he was the ‘bad one’, then when I heard them properly I realised how amazingly creative and influential he is!
Ringo was just the drummer in the most popular band of all time. His playing was perfect for all the songs. What make the Beatles so great is how well they play together. They are not as technically great as Led, but no band made a better sound than the fab four, and Ringo was an important part of that. The others knew him, and asked him to join.
It's not about The Beatles - Yellow Submarine. It's a guy - who talks of Ringo. I've never thought that Ringo needed it.
Ringo's beats are as intrinsic to the Beatles magic as were the others' contributions. His creativity across the different modes and styles the
Beatles gave birth too is amazing. When I play a Beatles song in my mind the beat anchors the memory and that's unique and is true for almost all of their music.

I think that the negativity around Ringo's drumming is that he never, ever, ever overplays. Not once. Not ever. That's the mark of a great drummer. He plays just what's needed and no more. A master.

Ringo is a great drummer and a great Beatle. Who can name the drummer for The Kinks just off the top of their heads ? Or The Animals? Gerry and the Pacemakers ? Hermans Hermits ? Freddie and the dreamers ? Or Journey ? Aerosmith? Etc.etc. Ringo is Awesome!
