  • Do you ever complete a narrative heavy game, one with arduous journeys, immense challenge, or emotional punishment, and instead of experiencing a sense of euphoria you feel as though you’ve lost something?
The fifteen games on this rundown aim to highlight this feeling. You complete what the game asks of you, but you’re left pondering - from a moral or emotional sense - if it was worth it.
Maybe you’re not the good guy you thought you were. Maybe humanity is saved, but you’ve lost something near and dear to you. Maybe you thought you were acting in service of something else, only to find you were being manipulated the whole time. Games, more than any other medium, have that potential to put you right in the shoes of someone contemplating quandary in their actions.

That's kinda the point of the genre. You can't save your life but you can save your sense of self. That's why I think the Nomad or the Afterlife endings are possibly the canonical one.

3:40 Actually, when people pointed out to me that the boy in Limbo died in a car crash, I didn't get that from the ending at all. When you pass through that veil of light and time slows down as you glide through the air, I more got the feeling that he was waking up from a dream, since he lands so softly in the grass afterwards. I know Limbo is literally a reference to the outer ward of hell, but to me it was just a catchy name.

If you take a look at the title screen after you complete the game, you'll see two piles on the ground with flies swarming around them by the tree. It's implied to be the boy and his sister.

@@jamespaul6315 Avenge him against what? He was already dead, and as a result of his own immoral actions nonetheless, beating down a dying father. It could be argued that, if anything, Micah gave him a better, less horrific death. TB is a truly awful way to go. In the end, the biggest win is that he just wanted to use his last breaths to protect John and his family, which he did. Although in context, that just makes the ending of RDR1 all the more tragic too.

Joel's actions were undoubtedly cruel and selfish, considering how many lives he took and that he went against Ellie's wish of becoming the cure for humanity. But as someone pointed out to me back when the game released, what WAS left to save?? Joel's actions were cruel, but it would arguably have been even crueler, after he got a second chance at fatherhood, to take his second daughter away from him.
