Thanks for the videos Jan! I wonder, how do you determine what to include and what to ignore while dodging and burning? In the video you briefly mention it's all about the smooth transition of light, not about removing every inconsistency. Could you maybe expand on that? So many folks remove every tiny inconsistency while d&bing, and I appreciate the subtlety you approach images with.
Well, that’s a good question. And a very subjective one, too. In my experience, you do the image good if you take out the most prominent imperfections first. This is where my help layers come in to visualize the most obvious areas with ease. Once those are smooth you can zoom out and check for more distractions. Tackle those with micro d&b. When you’re done and everything is smooth and even, it’s a good idea to take down the opacity of the d&b layers to 0% and bring it back to an amount where you feel the results are the most natural while remaining smooth. Give it a shot 😊🙌🏼
These helping layers have been amazing! I've used these about a week now and I feel like the whole editing process has got much smoother. Thanks for that! ⚡
Hey Zephir, that’s a question that many people have. I prefer to use opacity, because it allows me to slowly build up the effect, for example when using a brush with 10% opacity for dodging and burning. Whereas if you use flow, you need to let go of the brush stroke when a certain amount of time passed which is - in my opinion - less controllable in comparison.
Awesome! I noticed to subtle things you were doing and if you could kindly share the how. Switching between layers while dodging and burning and hiding and hide and unhide layers while showing before and after. Thanks in advance 🙏🏾
Hey Marcus, thank you for your feedback - so much appreciated! Sure, switching between layers is done by an old script of PhotoshopChef. He doesn’t offer it anymore on his website, but there is a panel that you could purchase from his website that has this feature. My friends from Infinite Tools are also about to release a free script with that feature soon. I am testing it at the moment. Toggling the layer visibility is easy. There’s a keyboard shortcut that you can activate. It is called „hide layers“ and you can apply any shortcut you like to it. You than just select the layers you want to toggle on and off and hit the shortcut. Let me know if it works for you!
Hi Jan, these are amazing tutorials of yours and are really helping a lot people like me that are just starting out with retouching images. The helping layer is just great to have. Would you be able to also share the dodge & burn action? Thank you very much for what you are doing. Your work is really much appreciated. Keep it on 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Hey Carl, thank you very much for your kind feedback. Super pumped you find valuable education here! My pleasure 🙌🏼 Well, the action only creates two simple curves with a black mask. Haven’t thought of sharing those yet. Let me check. 👍🏼
Hey Rahul, thank you for your feedback, highly appreciated! For toggling between d&b layers I am using a script. This has been released by Pratik Naik and you can find it on his youtube channel. He made a video about it. Really cool!
Hey Haies 09, thank you for your feedback and your question. In my experience the results get more pristine and clear with a 4-point solar curve rather than with 6 or 8. 😊🙌🏼
Okay so messing around with it. You get basically the same effect maybe even better by creating a mid tones mask with Selective Color adjustment, and you can move through the image with a brightness/contrast slider 😊
Hi jan! I am confused with something with your actions though... is there a point in which the image inverts itself when adjusting the brightnes? when is this? because around the middle it´s "normal" and if you go to the edges of the slider it inverts? so dodge you will see it as if you were dodging but in truth still dodging? Hope it´s clear my question hehee
Hi Ricardo, thanks for bringing up this question. You’re right. When using the slider all the way form left to right you are inverting and reverting the image. So it might be the case, that you would dodge things that are bright or burn things that are dark. But that is just visually, if you turn the layers off, you’ll see that you worked on d&b the “right” way. I found that using this way of sliding through the image super helpful, since you can visualize all the areas of the image one after the other and check those for flaws and imperfections. Note that DO NOT have to do it this way. It’s my way of having absolute control over my pixels. Does this help you?
@@JanWischermann Hmm kind of :). Because if I invert the image the bright areas will appear black and the dark white right? And yes, if I apply dodge to the black I will be applying light to an already bright part right? So in that case I would need to dodge the white partes to makes them "darker" in appearance but of course lighter on reality. Right?
@@ricardourroz9322 yes. And you’ll get used to it fast. But you can always additionally activate the invert help layer in the help layer stack to turn things “positive” again. Have a great start into your new week!
Yes, I am still using this layer setup. Of course I do use all sorts of layers to finish my files. But this set is the fundamental package I use every single time.
Wonderful tutorial, thank you! From your tutorial, I have discovered that using 10% opacity and 100% flow is working great for me, too. Other retouchers taught me that you need to set 100% opacity and build up using e.g. 3% of flow only. Good thing to see, you as a pro, are doing it differently. I have one question though: In the video I see you switching between your dodge and burn layer quickly while painting with the brush. How do you change these layers so quickly? I couldn't figure out your trick.
Hey Simon, thank you very much for your feedback - I am happy you found value in this video 🙌🏼 Me personally, I find it easier and more intuitive to build up the d&b when using 100% flow because I immediately see what I get after each brush stroke. I like to switch between the methods as I go though. About the fast switching between the layers, I use a script for that. These days my friends from Infinite Tools have released a free script that enables you to set up the layers you want to switch and dedicate a shortcut to it. Check the video description and/or the comments for the link please. It’s so good! 😉🙌🏼
