The irony of Google saying the workplace is no place for politics, while being politically bias af.
Yummy
It's apples and oranges dude.
If you don't like their politics, You're free to not work there. And they are free to not hire someone or to fire them. As I'm sure they are starting to do now. They will be making an effort to avoid hiring the kind of employees they just fired. People like Bri. They will try to hire more Ambers.
When he said that, I nearly spit out the drink I was sipping on. Yeah right!
not even close to the same but go off
Just correcting Bobby here: Google search results are NOT great, and they haven't been since like 2004.
Right! Use the other search engine with Duck in the name (Google is blocking me from putting the full name)

For real though, the algorithms on Google and RUclips are so transparently awful now and most people just can't see it. Tailor made echo chambers for us all.

The Internet is eating its own tail, friend
We need an open internet search. End Google monopoly.
What a joke Google not wanting to speak about politics
I know huh how dare a company not want people to get distracted from this little thing they were hired called “work” how dare they! 😅😅😅😅 c’mon people open your eyes. You go to work to work. If you want an employer to talk about the atrocities of Oct 7 then look for an employer that explicitly says they will. You don’t see Jewish people doing sit ins or demanding their employer condemn the acts of Oct 7 and you certainly also don’t see people in general doing sit ins anywhere demanding such. I wonder why hmm. Could it be that Jewish people and non pro Palestinian people have common sense and know how to coexist peacefully with others. I think so.
How about, go to work. Protest when you get home and they do a little bit of research on why everyone in the middle east hates hamas.

We could alternatively start enforcing the laws that are still on the books!

@@Marty234 Thanks Marty. Yep, that search engine is run by a handful of intelligence agencies too.
It's the one I tend to use, but just a public FYI...
Update and enforce anti-trust laws. The agency responsible for enforcing these laws only hands out financial penalties and they are so low compared to Google profits, they are a mere small nuisance to trillion-dollar companies, and they have no real effect. The small fees are a spit in the bucket for these companies. The monopoly laws need updating and more staff needs to be hired to enforce these laws with much larger penalties. They need to be broken up into smaller companies giving competitors a real chance to compete. They also need to be fined for any censorship campaigns and government officials demanding censorship campaigns need to be shown the door.
California: You can't link to our news sites for free.
Google: Your terms are acceptable. The links are removed.
California: How dare they stymy the flow of information!?
Yes,CA is attempting to have their cake and eat it too. If we simply encourage Google to do what b it is already doing, Google will fail completely in VERY short order. Just observe. It is, surprisingly, Google themselves who will provide all of the heavy lifting required to destroy the company utterly and completely.
Almost nobody in the public asked for this bill. you can bet the intention is censorship
Right!! I hate Google but I'm on their side on this one.
@@Marty234yummy
The goal of the legislation is censorship
Section 230 makes sense as long as the company does not censor or prioritize the content. Section 230 exists because users are free to publish content and the company cannot be sued over it. When the company censors, modifies, comments on or prioritizes however, it is no longer a transparent public communication and should be subject to law suits. It should not be OK for the phone company to censor or prioritize your calls based on the content of your speech and section 230 should not allow it for other media types either. It's either open or it's not. Who should decide what is "misinformation"? The nswer is: no one.
Exactly, Section 230 needs to be updated so that sites that decide to censor are no longer protected. They need to make sure their terms of use are clear and that it is universally applied and that there is an avenue for people to file complaints. If those complaints are legitimate and companies do not revert the ban in a timely manner while violating their own rules, then they should lose section 230 protection. This would curb censorship.

Sundar Pichai is absolutely right. If you don't like Google, don't work there.. Go work for a more upright company
Better yet, they can start their own to destroy Google. That sort of thing has happened to companies before and should again and again and again. These corporations are actually nested governments but the Constitution is not being applied to constrain them.
We should all file claims to gain some portion of the revenue gendered by our data sold to other parties without our consent.
There isn't much journalism found anywhere
Same thing is happening in Canada. Facebook isn't listing Canadian news sites. If these "link taxes" were actually to work and generate revenue that would be a happy accident. In Canada, the goal is to make strangle off ad-revenue (from added traffic to their sites) to newspapers and make journalists even more dependent on government for subsidies.
The internet is just like telephone for computers.
The elites at each others throats. That was bound to happen.
Google: okay, this is what your Google search for news stories will look if this goes through.
Politicians: how dare you!
I assume this bill will effect all search engines since you can't tailor laws towards one specific entity. If that's not the case then people in California can use Bing, Duck, yahoo, etc.

I don't get this. All those news sources require login when you click on the Google link. Why wouldn't you want it in the Google search?
Failing businesses that push mass disinformation for the state will turn to the state for help when they can no longer operate profitable.
MTV had a similar model with Artists. They didn’t front any money for the music videos but had demands to be in their platform. And Viacomm became a juggernaut on the backs of this model.
Google is no different. They didn’t invent the internet. It’s a tool that is built on the backs of other people’s work.

Worst part is California already knew this would happens because it happened less than a year ago in Canada.
Another issue is that with the internet, people can receive news from the actual source of the event much faster than the mainstream newspapers can report it. When the mainstream news does report the event, we already knew about it hours ago and the news reports are so distorted and dishonest we're deconstructing their lies as they're reporting!
Robby, are you insane? Legally, it's very distinct.
Google enjoys Section 230 immunity from liability because it's a platform. Rising does not because it's a publisher. Google doesn't produce content, it just aggregates and collates it. Rising produces content.
Rising is essentially a book, and Google is a library. Very different.

" your newspaper wont show up in our search results"
If this is all news outlets its unironically based
I’ve never seen a better case for the criminal statutes of the Antitrust Acts than Google.
Brianna undercuts her own argument when she admits that Google can't delist very many sites before it stops being the place people go to.
Also, if California is basically off of Google, people who live there will start using something else. The perceived benefit of switching only needs to exceed the ordered cost of change and the consumer will move to another search engine.
Telephone company comparison does not apply. As people using telephone company services do not demand company to pay THEM for using those telephone services.
"We are a small company that sells farts over the phone. And because people use the phone to call us all the time, it means that telephone company ought to pay us."
It is an absurd notion on its face.
Remember, the one who has the power is the one who has the ability to walk away from any terms they find unacceptable. Money gives one that ability.
California is now following a dumb idea from here in Canada. But Google needs to be broken up. It's the modern AT&T.
I still don’t get protesting an occupation in Gaza by conducting an occupation at work or a campus…it’s intellectually lazy and just reeks of irony.
Given that the US is arming one side in this war, and the ICJ has ruled that that side is engaged in a plausible genocide, then yes, there is a logic to protesting in the US.
Ask yourself why you don't see that.
Remember that Google's motto once was "Don't be evil" then the dropped it and did a 180.
Why just news sites? If they must pay those sites, why not pay for any and all copyrighted materials?
Google motto for the public is : "Don't be evil". But the true and complete of their motto is "Don't be evil, but I can".
Bri doesn't seem to understand that Big Tech is UNREGULATED. This is the HUGE problem. Everything else is regulated -- telephone company, medical industry, airline industry, FDA. But not tech. Time to nationalize tech.
