The entire album(s) parts 1, 2, and 3 is an entire story of Joe's life in music. Good listen through from start to finish.

This needs to be listened to, album by album, in order as it does tell an amazing tale.

The album this came from was a concept album.. In all of my life there has never been someone more focused on his own brand of perfection than Zappa. Like him or not he was a master at what he did. So many genres of music. Offbeat & a definite acquired taste. Thanks for posting Brad. He deserves more listens..

Frank reminiscing about the joy and simplicity of a first garage band, and he nails it.

I love Frank but I think his extended format storytelling (e.g. "Billy the Mountain", "Joe's Garage", "Greggery Peccary", "Beepies n' Beer") has a tendency to go off the rails into the absurd and doesn't IMO generally wrap up satisfyingly.

I can honestly say that about Thing-Fish. It falls apart. Maybe trying to be too ambitious putting out 90 minutes all at once.

This is from a three lp set that tells a story. A Zappa classic that will let you hear his true genius is "Watermelon In Easter Hay".

FZ loves to start songs out with a few "layers" and slowly add more and more as the song progresses. Always done tastefully. Watermelon in Easter Hay is another example, or Flakes. Good patient reaction to the master himself.

If you ever decide to do album reactions, this is where I recommend you start. This is an epic rock opera and features music and sounds that even now, forty some years later, will have you scratching your head and wondering; "How the F did they do that?" It will keep you laughing, too, and includes one of the era's most beautiful songs, the penultimate "Watermelon In Easter Hay."

I have been a huge fan of Zappas music for over 40 years, The man is a musical genius, Please keep listening to the album, i did like your reaction too, just hang on you are in for the musical ride of your life,

There's two ways you can go with this, you can step aside right now and pretend you didn't hear this. Or you can continue onward with Frank and you will never be the same person again... I'm not saying everything he ever did was perfect far from it, or that everything he ever did was this interesting but he may have the most loyal, dedicated, and musically sophisticated fan base of any 20th century artist.

I first heard of The Taliban from the liner notes of Joe's Garage. The outlawing of music in Afghanistan and the correlation of The Evangelicals censorship of music in The U.S.!

Thumbs up for the Bjork t-shirt alone.
I don't know if you're planning on running through the whole Joe's... concept album. But if not, here's a random Zappa suggestion - this specific version of Inca Roads, because it shows how far out he could get when Vinnie was in the band: ruclips.net/video/3bZ6aT-OHdU/видео.html (starts at 1 h 13 m 50 s)

This is the second track of what is essentially a rock opera album. The first track, Central Scrutinizer, (the narrator of the story) sets the context. Zappa was a fierce opponent of the hysterical right-wing efforts to censure music content in the 1970s. The “explicit lyrics” warning label on album covers was a compromise, but if the evangelicals had their way, the same puritanical bleeping censorship used for commercial television broadcasts would have been applied to music as well. This album was Zappa making fun of them and their brand of evangelical fascism, providing a parody of their point of view as a cautionary tale for American youth on the moral dangers of pursuing a career…in [MUSIC]. It follows the story of Joe, who begins by innocently having a good time playing in the garage with his friends and how this brush with music triggers a spiral into depravity and sin. It is hilarious, irreverent, and full of really well produced and performed songs.

Nope; there is an overall (multiple) message: don't trust some people in authority whether it is the police, church, business and government. He spoke out against fascism in American government and cautioned against the American theocracy. Search online for Frank's quotes and see that he was a visionary and foresaw much of the turmoil happening today.
Zoot Allures is one of my favourite Zappa albums. Cheers all and as a Canadian, "Don't Eat Yellow Snow!".

I feel like Zappa took flack from listeners because of his style. The lyrics are often conversational, sometimes nonsensical. But how important is the meaning of the lyrics in the context of music? I can listen to a song performed in a foreign language and enjoy it.
