It's Analogue Pocket review time...or more like a preview...as Gauntlet arcade, Gauntlet II and more Atari games just recently got added by Obsidian Dot Dev (from work by Alex on the MiSTer FPGA side of things) as an Analogue Pocket core! And who wouldn't want more retro gaming handheld FPGA fun on the Atari arcade side of things!
and if you need any Analogue Pocket guide videos check the playlist! Or MiSTer FPGA as well!
And check out FPGAGaming discord where a lot of pocket chat happens : / discord
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) It seems like a LOT of people are interested in the Analogue Pocket and FPGA gaming in general....and a LOT of Analogue Pockets are shipping lately...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
Analogue has been making FPGA gaming devices for a while now with an FPGA Super Nintendo, FPGA Sega Genesis and now FPGA Analogue Pocket...but its the Analogue Pocket that seems like the retrogaming hidden gem as who doesn't want portable FPGA gaming!
And there are a TON of awesome Analogue Pocket OpenFPGA arcade cores to play! So lets check them out!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Of all the arcade games I played, the Gauntlet games were the ones I put the most amount of money into. Atari system 1.5 hardware was amazing for how many sprites could be displayed on the screen at once.
It has a nice way of using parallel pipelined line buffers to draw the sprites.
It is a massive amount of sprites for the era
I used to play Gauntlet for 8 hours + on one quarter. To take bathroom breaks I used to hand it off to someone watching me play, go to Mcdonalds a few blocks away, come back and still had 2/3 of massive health pool left. Only reason I stopped was bc I had to go home.
Haha so what you are saying is you were good at it
Now I really want to play Gauntlet I and II now more than ever. Nice one VGE. 8^)
Anthony..
Now is the time
Oh I love this game! I used to pump in quarters after quarter in the arcade machine!
Yes, I'm happy to see you
Haha well you better be
I would love to see Spy Hunter ported from the MiSTer, but the NES version does fill that urge to play it on the handheld.
One of my wives fav games randomly
Gaunlet 64 with 4 players is top tier fun. Love OG also but have only played solo.
Solo is fun but it just gets that much more fun with friends
Few games are more accurately named as Gauntlet! It is what it says!
A never ending fight. But a fun one
I played the OG a lot when it was fresh way back then. But it wasn't until I revisited it on the Genesis/MD that i got hooked. That Sakimoto OST is a masterpiece!
Dark Legacy has always been my fav
Gauntlet was one of the OG 4-player games. Just a shame that I never saw it in the wild when I was a kid. Also, Atari Games was the best American arcade developer of the 80's outside of Vid Kidz (Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar).
Atari made SF Rush and for that alone they will always be the best of the US to me
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, they had a good resurgence after the success of Area 51, which was almost everywhere at its peak. Also, did you know that Area 51 ran on hardware based on the Atari Jaguar?
Yep. CoJag. Weird piece of hardware
I really want Sega CD on the Pocket but maybe there aren't enough logic elements? No idea.
I don’t believe it’s doable
There’s an end?! I thought it just went on forever
Once they start recycling levels it kind of feels like one to me
Since you mentioned the Simpsons, I’m really struggling to find the 2 player version for the Analogue Pocket. Would you please tell me how to do this? Do I need to compile the arcade rom or something? I can’t seem to find a prepackaged Analogue version available to download out on the internet. Thanks!
Open the RBF file. It’ll tell you the exact file you need to add. I can’t remember off the top of my head but the RBF indicates the file for each variant version
i havent tryed yet but is vindicators a dual stick driving game? one stick per tread try that
I think so but with dual analog I wasn’t getting it to work
I want midnight resistance
A fun one for sure
@@VideoGameEsoterica I remember beating at the arcade without dying
That will likely just randomly show up one day. As it's a JT core.
smash tv for me :)
A classic indeed
FIRST!
Yeah you are!
