As a Konkani Saraswat Brahman whose ancestors fled from Goa because of the Portuguese persecution, I almost cried watching Sawani ji speak. The situation was very similar to what Kashmiri Hindus faced but here the colonizers were Christian zealots. I am a proud Hindu not because of my achievements or some false sense of superiority but because of the great sacrifices of my Hindu ancestors. They held on to their faith, their gods, and their Dharma even in such dire situations. I can only imagine the kind of courage and commitment that they carried in their hearts to be able to let go of everything but not their Dharma.

I’m a Goan Brahmin. My kuldevi is Vijayadurga in Keri. My ancestors fled Goa and went to Karnataka. Even our kuldevi was moved twice from her original location. The current location of the temple is on the hill top and it’s quite secluded!
The story goes that the priests hid the idol and carried her on the mountain to prevent Portuguese from vandalizing the idol.

    Everyone should read the following:
-Denaming of Goa by Bernardo Elvino DeSousa
-Castes of Mind: Colonialism and making of modern India by Dirk
-will sweetman's publication on 'The Dravidian Idea in Missionary Accounts of South Indian Religion'
-and to understand how missionaries were involved in slave trading of so called lower caste you can read publication from portugese scholar 'Manumission of Slaves in Goa During 1682 to 1760 as Found in Codex 860' by Teotonio R. Desouza.
Reminder india wasn't the only land where this has happened. Every non-white and non-christian ruler land which was colonized or inquisitioned faced the same. Native american tribe, Native Canadian tribes, central and south africa, aboriginals of australia, latin america.
It wasn't until the treaty of yandabo (1826) that the christian missionaries didn't start the conversion in what they termed 'North-East India'. Read about heraka movement, seng khasi movement etc.
Its only because of two Abhramanical faiths that this land has endured so much.

As a young child i always wondered how a very harmonious community with a distinct vedic culture, speaking Konkani language came to be amidst the heartlands of Kerala that too in a town like Kayamkulam .It was only when i grew up that i learnt the of the unfathomable struggles they had gone through and how they sought safety along with their deities to the Odanad Kingdom where the King gave them an existing Temple of his own to accommodate the deities including the existing Sri Vittoba Temple administered by the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins.
Pranam to all the Goan fraternity who had to endure such pain. The need of the hour at the very least is a Truth and Reconciliation initiative to ensure that wounds are eased ( if not healed ) and the stories included and taught in the National Academic History syllabus . For even if one forgives, it must not be forgotten. 🙏

And why hindus of Goa invited Portuguese to first trade with Goa? A kind of state was getting formed there under Adil Shah, if that had remained, Goa would have been a sort of Mid-West Pakistan today. If you forgot then speak to your who ever elder is alive today. @@kiranbahety8438goa was actually a Buddhist state for almost 2000yrs it was the frist religion which came to goa an the native goan accepted it. since in the beginning natives never had any religion. The next religion to enter goa was jainism in was in practice for almost a 1000yrs. Then in 52AD Christianity came to goa before it reached Europe or America although it had very few followers at that time. Then in around 1198 there was a genocide in goa whereby most of the Buddhist an jains were either killed or forced to abandon their faith an some took shelter in the neighboring kingdoms, Christianity was saved from this genocide because they never had any places of worship because the concept of church was not there at that time. An that's how present day Hinduism came to goa. Most of the temples which are before 13th century are actually either Buddhist or jains places of worship which were converted into temples. An at that time of history there were no muguls, Portuguese or British in India or goa.

If I may add , Sati was not dominant any time in India.
    Take Kunti of Mahabharata fame.
If Sati was prevalent , even she should have been pushed to Sati
Sati was an option which allowed the wife to enter Sati ONLY AND ONLY if her family responsibilities were over , and then too she had to go to the guru who would say yes or no.
( A very important saint [Shri Vasaraja teertha] in our Kannada tradition was born only when the guru said NO to the wife and the guru was powerful enough to bring the dead husband back to life).
Sati would be brought into a forceful practice only to prevent the widows from being sold to prostitution.
Hence , evidences of Sati are more dominant in North India in comparison to South India due to rampant attacks there

Sold these ladies in Meena Bazaars for prostitution work. All red light areas were created by Mughals and Christians. All badwords had come from Abrahamic religions. There is no respect for women and are considered as soul less property or material objects that can be sold in market. This practices still goes on secretly in Democracy and openly in Muslim countries. Afganistan videos are available to see live video of selling girls in Burkhas in the market.

Goa should be renamed as its orignal name, 'Gomanchal' can be a beautiful name, as new as original name. Bharat Sarkar/ Indian Government should reclaim it. Very sad real story of Goa, never ever heard of it before. Thanks for this podcast to both people.God Almighty God Shiva bless Gomanchal people all true peace, love, happiness, power and bliss.

Excellent Podcast...what I have learnt from this and other podcasts is that atrocities on the simple people are most common by Spanish, Portuguese, Mogul, British. The Hindus have never done anything like this ever but have always been at the receving end.

People in India were busy fighting each other and expanding their territory.... please don't be in misconception....plus even today u must be knowing... India is known for rich natural resources..... obviously people would want to get the best....and even today there is no UNITY in India.... imagine how it would have been centuries ago........ after independence also instead of being super power....they r fighting with each other on the basis of so called religion.

@@zoyaabraham4192I agree people had no unity, even during british rule, Britishers used Indian's to fight among indians. Something is wrong with them.
