Interesting! many times the quads are inhibited (shut-off) from firing after a "cork" to the VMO, which can lead to the feeling of the knee being unstable, and yes collapsing. In the case above investigating the underlying cause of the VMO TP's would be prudent given the severity of the patients reaction.
On a side note, I quite often find TP's in the VMO that inhibit proper firing of the muscle a large factor in many patella tracking cases, (along with glutes group & TFL TP's).
The poor old ITB gets flogged un-necessarily in many treatment regimes!
    Cheers!

I should add, and endless vastus medialis strengthening exercises are given when the muscle is inhibited with TP's. Leaving the therapist often mystified as to why they can't get the muscle to fire! The obvious answer is, of cause, to deactivate the trigger points!

So what do you do about it, all that time to say nothing much no time to say this how to treat it.
