Laura, you explained & gave examples of this “get 70%” concept so well!!!!!! I used to always clean like Mother Superior was visiting and grading. And I’m not even Catholic. Thank you so much for your concepts and spirit! ❤
This is such an important lesson to learn! All the items you clean will end up dirty again! One shortcut I started recently: instead of folding each individual pillowcase, I will stack one set of 4 and fold them together. It is quicker and it makes it easier to put them away and use them next time.
I’m 81 with a couple of autoimmune diseases. Only this year did I receive permission to not fold underwear and cleaning cloths or wash cloths from Cas the Clutterbug. I’ve heard it before, but only now was I willing to do it 🤦♀️
This really helped me to hear. I struggle with the "if you're going to do something at all, you have to do it right mentality." If I see one or two spots on the kitchen cupboard behind my trash can, I see that as "well, now I have to clean all these cupboards." NO! I do not. But it's kind of hard to get out of that habit. I've been making much more of an effort to keep on top of the little things and let go of perfectionism in trade for overall tidyness. Little habits like never leave a room empty handed or don't put it down, put it away really do help. And the truth is, no matter how much we clean or how much effort it takes, most of the mess is going to come right back anyway, so why the need to be perfect?
I stopped folding my kids clothes years ago and it was a game changer! When they’re newborns there is SO many tiny things to fold! Why?! When they’re older and they pick their own clothes they unfold everything to find what they want anyway. We sort shirts, pants, pajamas and then they get piled in the drawers. Done!
Most of the time my sheets go from the dryer right back on the bed. If I'm switching the sheets I fold in half and roll them up, then I place them in a bin. I love bins because if something is visible I have to fold it!!!!
Oh my gosh...laughed out loud at folding washrags and making sure they are all stacked with the folded edge on same side...I will try a basket, but don't know if I can actually do that! Great ideas, thank you!
I love the small channel Clean with Kate. No making excuses, no psychoanalyzing. Just cleaning and touring her lovely well-loved home. Just gettin' it done, with a British accent!
It was SOO helpful hearing these tips! As a “recovering” perfectionist (lol) I do the same thing. Deep clean everything when all I was after originally was ONE SPOT. This gave me a different perspective and, ultimately, allowed me to grant myself permission to be fine with average when it comes to cleaning. Cause you’re right! There are more important things to spend your time on
This is a game-changing hack! I so relate to this! THANK YOU. I am beginning to learn that even a five minute quick clean done more often yields greater results, is more satisfying and not so overwhelming. You then start to have the confidence to tackle those dustier hidden places, but not all at once - just a few minutes whenever you feel like it and when you happen to be in that area. Little and often is the key! You then see results over a few days and then if you do decide to do a longer deep clean you are already half way there and you don't feel panic because you know you could stop and it would still look ok!
Great ideas Laura. I've been cleaning people's homes for over 10 years and when I vacuum I have a duster in the back pocket of my jeans so I can dust an area prior to vacuuming - saves so much time. Even better with cordless vacuums cause they're lighter - you can have duster in one hand and vacuum in the other! *Another thing I've learnt is to fold the washing straight from the clothesline into family piles - in drawer order (little OCD) and deliver straight to their rooms. *Love your socks idea wish I knew this 10 years ago when the kids were little but I have finally (yeah!) got my kids to hang socks in pairs on the clothesline.
Love your sock suggestion. When I was raising three boys, each had a different colour, one wore white, one wore black and the third wore grey. HUGE time saver.
Laura, Yes, the washrags, underwear & such HAS to be folded. 😅 I do buy all the same socks, but I still match them up. If I didn't do all that, I would be stressed knowing it wasn't done. I'm just that person who has to do it. 😊
I can so relate to this. Sometimes I've been tempted to skip a step in the folding, arrangement, or stack of laundry and how it gets put away, and I can't just leave it alone. It becomes that persistent mental irritant that needs attention, and it's just easier to do it "right" even if it takes more time. It becomes a case of "you pay now or you pay later, but either way you're going to pay." So I put more time into it for the mental peace of mind. 🤷♀️
I only have so much room in the wash towel basket so they need to be folded to fit. Also I buy black ones for my husband and he would not hunt through a messy pile to find one so he would end up using my pretty ones.
@@robbiem1949 - I wear sandals every day of the year that I possibly can. And I have black socks for everything else. Black leggings, black pants, black shoes. Boring but effective.
@@charmc4152 - I would say that if you feel that compulsion to do things perfectly, take time to smell the roses and enjoy the heck out of how beautiful it is, when you’re done!
To say that you “have to do it” is limiting. Words have power! Next few times, say I choose to do this perfectly. Then make a deal that you will be perfectly imperfect on one item set such as panties. Every time you open it, praise your growth in choosing to do it differently. In the end, you may go back to perfection mode but you will see that the sky did not fall and you indeed have a choice.
I do my dish cloths like you do your wash clothes. Toss them in a basket in the lower cabinet. Also I refuse to match socks 🤦♀️. All black or white and tossin baskets 😝
my mum calls this "a lick and a promise" and sometimes I have to remind myself of this. Due to health problems I can't always have a spotless house but if I give everything "a lick and a promise" it looks so much better and I feel better and less stressed. I cannot, not fold my underwear, seeing it not tidy in my drawer would do my head in and I would have to take everything out to fold it, then I would have to clean the drawer and change the paper which would lead onto other jobs or I would get distracted by another job and it wouldn't get done, then bedtime would come and I wouldn't be able to go to bed until my underwear drawer was tidy again 😄 the struggle is real.
I have a motto I adopted a few years back Do it as you come to it. I started this when I got Covid Longhaulers, which wiped out my ocd and I couldnt concentrate, I finally decided just do it and move on, thank you for this video. I never fold under clothes, just toss them.I just found a telescopic Swiffer duster , game changer- it is fun and I cleaned 2 rooms of picture frames I couldn't reach,,yaaay. try it !!
this is so me! I think I have to do a major cleaning every time and that is why I take so long to do it waiting for the time. Thank you. Love your videos.
I thought my mom was brilliant, though, I’m pretty sure my dad had a hand in this also: the family laundry was in a semi finished area across the patio, and they constructed a little tower of two by fours that held sturdy plastic dish pans. Half a dozen. One for each child and one more. My mom put each child’s laundry into a specific bucket that we were responsible for taking to our room and putting away.… And returning bucket, of course. It made it super easy for her to do the laundry every day without having to pile it up so much. Our home always felt tidy unless we were in the middle of a game, because everything had a home. We would generally come home to smell something for dinner simmering on the stove. She got outside help for a short while when the youngest of us was a baby. I guess even an organized mom can find things a little overwhelming after number five arrives. Plus, she didn’t seem to think that all of her kids need to be involved in multiple activities. That made life easier for her and for us, Along with the fact that dad did the whole Little league coaching thing, which was my brothers’ favorite activity. Those were the days when entire families were not expected to show up just because a boy was having baseball practice or a game.
In Sweden many people 'rock their socks', ie rockar sockorna in Swedish. My SIL throws all of the family's socks into one big basket. Who ever needs socks picks out two socks that match size-wise. No matching pair of socks. If they want a matching pair, it's up to that person to rummage through the basket. In Sweden, rock the socks is a well known habit.
This is why I follow a cleaning routine (Clean Mama cleaning routine, look it up). Small-medium tasks are done daily, and in a certain order, so when it’s time to vacuum, the dusting was done the day before, thus preventing this whole conundrum. And I’ve noticed that actually following this routine, since things are getting done on a regular basis, I naturally drop the perfectionist tendencies, since I know if I didn’t get it to a certain standard this time, I will get to it again soon and rectify it.
My motto of several years: Better done than perfect!
Laura, you explained & gave examples of this “get 70%” concept so well!!!!!! I used to always clean like Mother Superior was visiting and grading. And I’m not even Catholic. Thank you so much for your concepts and spirit! ❤
This is why you get your kids involved in chores. I always say they might not do a perfect job but it was better than it was before.
I thought the whole point of matching and folding socks and underwear was that it’s a great reason to take a l’il tv break!!!! 😂
I gave up on folding underwear (though I do pair socks) and it has been so freeing.
@@ajvintage9579 ❤️ I hear the theme song. “let it go” whenever people feel like they’ve broken the shackles of useless house work!

I am so relating to this! My stairs are dusty and I always feel guilty about this. No more--70% is good enough. Clean what I can when I can.

This perfectionist 100% agrees with everything you said. I'm ok with a grade of Satisfactory!

Kool!
Or you could just use safety pins to keep each pair of socks together before you put them in the dirty laundry or in the wash machine.
😮
... or in a mesh laundry bag.
