    Just a little hint if I may.... whenever possible touch things once. Your wheelbarrow or trolley should be under where you are cutting your wood so it drops directly in then you can just wheel it to the house. You could even put a canvas liner in the wheelbarrow and pick the whole thing up and place it in the house, job done.

    Katie another way to get rid of tree stumps is to drill several holes with a spade bit and fill the holes with epsom salts then cover them over.. It works really well.

    I used to love it when we had power cuts on the Isle we stay on.. we'd use oil lamps and candles (we bought 3000 from IKEA years ago in a springtime sale. We used candles and oil lamps when we lived on the canal in Englandshire).
    Anyway.. I love power cuts even more now since I got the island linesman job 10 years or so ago. Cos now when the hydro goes off SSEN pays me to go out and find the fault and hopefully fix it.. yay.

    The fire in your bedroom mabe put a iron hood over the chimney breast so it barricades any smoke from entering the room if there's a hood on it the smoke will rise into it then go straight up the chimney my grandparents had the same fireplace they had a hood just above the fire to protect any smoke escaping it might work for you not sure 👍👍👍😊😊😊😊

    Re the tree stump - you could build a fire over the stump , using some of the enormous amount of fallen timber you have. One the fire takes and the stump is burning, it should burn out under ground - I did with an old Ash stump…. It burnt for 10/11 days underground - but it never came back!

    Good job on the trench so far. You did say that the one side needed lining with stone, and you have plenty in the front yard so it will look great once you have that done. It'll look like a mini waterfall almost. Hopefully you'll have enough stone to do both sides. And maybe enough to fix that back wall where its wearing away. But I'm sure if you don't have enough out front there's plenty more around the island.

    As we say in my mother tongue, death has a cause. I wonder whether there weren't elderly people living there for quite some time that could not keep up with maintaining the trench, and the need to do that never occured to the newcomers after them.
    Keep up the good work. Steadily this house will return to its former integrity.

    I'm going to be really annoying here and let you know stuff that you are already very aware of. I am an irrigation engineer, and working with the fall of water when de-silting is key.However having said that, I see no reason why this building shouldn't dry right out now( clearing out all of the small stones will prevent capillary action from holding the water in the trench). If things are still damp, just get a cheap gutter to carry the water wherever you need. Use a cosmetic finish to make it less of an eye sore if you need too. Good luck.

    I agree with your instincts... Two options - best but far more work is the jack hammer and widen... But I also think that the floor of the spillway might just be enough to make it smooth and better fall (steeper). 2" of waterproof concrete will give a number of years of peace. Well done on a crap job... Where are all the 5 year olds when you need them!

  • @jenniferwalker9060
    @jenniferwalker9060 8 месяцев назад +1

    This may sound a bit out there, but here goes, is it possible to reroute the water before it gets to the concrete plinth. That way it will not run into your trench. Good luck.

    • @TheScottishIsle

      The water is coming from a natural underground stream, running downhill from the top of the island. Impossible to rectify, given the costs involved.

    Katie, I have a question. When showing us the scalded pot of Nana's, you ended with "bless her soul." You said that after mentioning that she wasn't the best of cooks. Over here in the U.S. South, we say something similar after gently noting a friend's flaw -- we say "bless her heart." Is your "bless her soul" a common saying in Scotland? I'm wondering if the two are connected?
    Also -- isn't it wonderful that that excellent stove was a found object on the island? Amazing! And the bedroom grate is so charming. It's really pretty. It will be wonderful to look at in the winter when that's the living room.

    • @TheScottishIsle
      @TheScottishIsle  11 месяцев назад +2

      Honestly, I'm not sure how common it is. You hear fewer and fewer people here blessing each other in any way at all! Although, when I was growing up, I heard "bless her socks", too. Kx

      Scott tends to buy army surplus as serviceable, hard-wearing footwear. We have waxed leather for the rain, and wool to keep us warm; both very forgiving - if they get muddy, just need brushed off when dry. We can mend what we have if needs be, but we're not ruining anything by working in what we have. Kx
