Because Van Zandt played the character with such extreme mannerism had the actor playing the young Silvio downplayed it, people would say they didn't even realize it was Silvio because he had none or little of the mannerism.

I like Michael a lot. I think he is a good dude but he’s also been pounding the political pulpit a lot these past few months and I think that’s the real reason that he had an issue with this movie. I’m not a democrat or a republican, I don’t believe one side is all good in the other side is just evil for the sake of being evil I think that’s a little ridiculous but I have Seeing all the conservative Sopranos fans be up in arms because they’re referring to the Newark riots as a BLM thing in the movie. Do you know if they would’ve never have brought the riots up in the original series 3 different times then I could kind of see the argument. But the riots were brought up in the original series no less than three times and then they make a prequel that is going to take place during that time and everyone knew that we were going to see part of the riots in this movie. So I don’t really buy this whole thing that the whole reason David Chase made this movie was to make a BLM statement. Especially if you’re covering a time in history where this actually happened and you already referred to it several times in the sopranos universe. So I really think he’s using that anger about that and then using that as an excuse to rip on this movie. But the crazy thing is that Micheal has no problem with Godfather, Goodfellas and regular episodes of the Sopranos but to say TMSON makes Italians look bad and the others don’t is very Hypocritical.

Michael started out on RUclips being extremely level headed and down to earth. This movie review he did seemed to be rge turning point. He seems far more "back in my mob days" in a tough guy way now. He just had a full-blown argument with Sammy the bull on Valuetainment as well. I can't help but think the RUclips fame / money has effected him.

    • @bdr113080
      @bdr113080 2 года назад +10

Honestly ever since he started doing the Valuetainment videos is when he really started to change I think. It’s really sad because I do like Michael , I think he is a genuinely good person but just like other people in my life that I actually know as people in real life that are good people sometimes politics make people blind. I don’t care which side of the fence he’s on I have friends on both sides but before he started going on their RUclips channel he was much more levelheaded and seem to have cold things down the middle and I really do think his entire rant about the movie just because he was in this mindset of that hard-core Republican that is just looking to get offended by things like that. There wasn’t any more racism in this movie than there was in movies like Goodfellas or the Sopranos series and I’m glad in this video he actually talked about it because Michael gives high praise to the series but you can tell he hasn’t watched it because the same stuff in this movie is in the television series. And it’s not like they made one race the good guys and one raised the bad guys in this movie. It’s a movie about criminals Michael so yes everyone in the movie was portrayed as a bad guy not because of the race but because they were criminals. He started linking the riots as the main problem between the Italian guys in the black guys in the movie and that wasn’t really it at all. The riots lead Herald down a path that made him change things but it’s not like he blamed the Italians for the riot and they even went out of their way in the movie to point out that the black guy in the cab was never actually killed . The riots were started in the movie because of the police not because of the mafia. I think Michael was just so angry about the political things he’s been talking about on their RUclips channel and he is that that’s just where his mindset was he was just enraged about politics so when he saw that it really triggered him. And hey I get it and I do think there are some movies that go out of their way to try to be overly woke and put the agenda before the story and I admit this movie was not a perfect movie. I think it would’ve been a lot better if they broke it down to like a 10 episode miniseries and really flushed everything out myself but I don’t think that they were trying to be woke when they made the movie. Good luck trying to have an adult discussion with anyone who is in that mindset though because even if you try to have a polite adult discussion I’ve found that they just fly off The handle and starts calling you a snowflake without even finding out what your view on anything was.

But if you’re going to give all of those movies a pass and see this one makes Italians look bad that just seems really hypocritical. I think his main problem with this movie that he will never Come out and admit is that at the same time that he saw this movie he’s been in on that other RUclips channel that’s supposed to supposedly air the sit down between him and Sammy the bull and that’s actually a political channels. Those guys talk politics on that channel every day and Michael is a diehard Republican. Every conservative that I’ve known that has watched the movie really get upset because they showed the riots in there. They’re using it as an excuse to accuse David Chase of trying to make a woke movie and while I agree there are definitely movies and television shows that have fake woke Messages in them I don’t think that’s what David was doing it all. They mention the riots in the Sopranos series 3 different times and we all knew going into this movie that it was going to take place during the time of the riots. It would be something totally different if in the original series they acted like the riots never happened in the sopranos universe and then just introduced us to these real life events for the first time in the sopranos university next movie but that’s not what happened. So I think it’s more about his political ties then “ oh no they’re making Italians look like bad guys in the movie because they’re committing crimes” really? @@bdr113080 I grew up in Chicago during the time period depicted. Half my family was connected to the Chicago Outfit by marriage (none made members, just associates to my knowledge). Through these people I knew several soldiers and associates of the Lucchesi Family out of NY. The fact is, Italians hated blacks, looked at them as sub-human and would literally kill them on site if caught in an Italian neighborhood after dark. They would stuff the bodies into the sewer as a warning. So yes the movie is somewhat accurate in that aspect except it did not go nearly far enough in the violence of Italian mobsters against blacks in general. Franzese claiming that never happened is an outright lie and a massive one at that. Italians are extremely conservative as it is and the only reason any of them voted democrat was because of union membership. Once the unions lost power, almost all of those Italians went full republican.

    • @bdr113080

Yeah it’s far from the perfect Mall movie. There were things about it I really liked but overall I really wish it would’ve been like a 10 episode miniseries with every episode being an hour long. You stretch all of what happened out across 10 hours and you drop an episode a week so we’ve got 2 1/2 months to watch it and we get to know some of these older characters that weren’t in the original series a little better I think it would’ve been much better received. And I don’t care who likes it or who doesn’t like it that doesn’t affect how I view the movie at all and as someone who likes Michael a lot I really do think that ever since he’s been on the valuentertainment Channel a lot that he’s been very worked up into politics and I think the whole race riots part of the movie kind of triggered him and that’s all he could think about. But it really does feel like he only have paid attention to the movie because nowhere in the movie did it say that the black gang or the good guys in the Italian mafia we’re just these racist evil people. The movie was about criminals so everyone in the movie regardless of the race was doing shady shit. There wasn’t a “good guy “in this movie. He really needs to watch the entire series of the Sopranos though before we start saying some of these things because to anyone trying to just judge this fairly we can all tell that if he would’ve watched the whole series that all of this stuff was in the original series it’s not like that was added into the movie because they were trying to give a political message the Sopranos has never been about that. They’re going to put what’s in the story in the story regardless how anyone feels about it. That’s what made the series “groundbreaking “was they Push the envelope and didn’t really care who was offended but they never push the envelope for the sake of pushing it though it always match the story.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought he was acting weird in his review of the movie. Fun fact when he was complaining about Dickie murdering his father but in one of his videos he actually talks about a mobster and that mobsters brother who he knew who was ordered to kill their father and did so. So we know that patricide is something the mob will do.
His whole rant was nonsensical and I think he either doesn't watch them or has missed the point of some of his favorite media in that the mobsters are portrayed as pieces of shit who leech of their communities and they were the ones who gave Italian Americans a bad name.
I think this whole situation showed that Mr.Franzese is a very talented speaker and businessman with interesting insight into the mob life, but personal experience with the media he talks about is sketchy and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Stories he told me about growing up that there was heavy racial tension in certain areas. There’s many reference to that on the Sopranos series. I respect everyone right to their own opinion but that plot in the story was needed. If anything it shows the molding of Tony’s own ideology and prejudice as he got older.

He’s one of the few people that are a conservative that has a platform like he does that will openly admit that there is no proof that the rigged. I’m not saying it was or it wasn’t but I’m just pointing out that the way he reviewed this movie is very inconsistent with the way that we know his mind to work up till now. I was really shocked when I saw his review and I was thinking the same thing you were. “ am I the only one that just feels like Michael is looking for a reason to not like this movie?” It’s one thing to not like a movie like the movie but I admit there were some problems with it it’s not a perfect movie by any means but the way Michael was going at it just seems really odd considering everything else he reviewed has the exact same kind of stuff in it but he never mentioned any of those things in the other reviews but for some reason in this movie he is hell-bent on dying on that hill.

And even his statement that a war between white and black gangsters over the numbers racket never happened is wrong. It’s not Newark in the 60s, but in New York in the 30s there was a war between Jewish gangster Dutch Shultz, backed by Italian gangster Lucky Luciano, and black gangster Bumpy Johnson, over control of the numbers racket in the black neighbourhoods in Harlem. Pretty much exactly the set up for the gangster conflict in this movie.

Now maybe Michael and his father weren’t racist themselves or ever had an issue with black people, but that wasn’t the majority zeitgeist of the era and there most definitely was tension especially in the 1950s/1960s. Think he took issue with Dickie calling Harold the N-word and Johnny boy being upset about blacks moving into the neighborhood; which you can’t deny wouldn’t of been an issue during those times again even if Michael isn’t racist nor minds having a black neighbor these days. Guilt is bothering him after so many years being away from it all, and he's afraid people will look at the film and see him in that light after converting.
I don't know. Truthfully, there was a certain point when I felt like his mob video stuff just stopped being healthy for everyone involved. A lot of impressionable young people and sycophantic adults look up to him and I think him carving a niche as the "mob guy" is really starting to take it's toll psychologically (Like calling his get togethers "sit-downs", him almost glamorizing his nostalgic memories of the life.) Franzese fails often to mention that. Deal and Die was a myth. Vito Genovese and Vincent "The Chin" Gigante went to prison on the same case as Galante back in 1959. The Cherry Hill Gambinos were the main crew selling heroin for the Gambino Family during Carlo's run as boss. Every family was running dope for years. A lot of the mobsters caught at Apalachin were in Harry Anslinger's Black Book for the Bureau of Narcotics dating back from 1930. Every boss received money from their crews that were dealing and turned a blind eye to where the money came from

They killed the boss bc they were about to be whacked. The Bonnanos were thrown off the commission because of drug dealing and their rep was brought back by Massino's efforts. Most of their money was made elsewhere by and large.

Axel Arroyo Since Galante, Genovese and Chin went to prison for Narcotics Conspiracy in 1959, begs to differ that they didn't dabble much. As far as Castellano, we all know why his murder went down, but we also know that he accepted large sums from the DeMeo Crew because they were heavily into drug sales, as well. The Bonannos had been off the Commission since the 60's. First, when Joe Bonanno attempted to move on Carlo Gambino and Tommy Lucchese. Next, when Galante tried to hijack the top spot, as well as not sharing his connections. Then finally, Donnie Brasco. By the time Massino got the Bonnanos back in the Commission it was 1992... In defense of Franzese, he does come from the one family (Colombo) that wasn't well known for Drug Dealing, unlike the other 4 families that have been involved with Drugs since before the formation of La Cosa Nostra... Even Luciano was once busted for Heroin Trafficking and he snitched on his confederates🤷🏾‍♂️

And most weren't smart enough to be in the real huge earnings, like construction and labor racketeering... In all honesty, drugs were the only route that lesser earning member could rely on

I can get and fully respect not wanting negative portrayals of ones group* being displayed without requisite counter balance, but the main characters in the TV Show were HORRIBLE people, by most measures, so his being taken aback by the negative roles being played in the movie rang of cognitive dissonance to me. When I watched Michael's review of the movie all his talk on racism just seemed off - It came across as if he was looking at things through modern 2020s eyes rather than that this was set some 50 years ago when things were quite different.
And it did seem inconsistent with his feelings about A Bronx Tale, a movie he loves and raves about, yet still has pretty much the same racial undertones ("Hey a black guy is walking down our street, lets go beat him and put him in the hospital" or "Hey for no reason lets go to the black community a couple of blocks away and shoot them just because they are there") but he didn't seem to take any offence to.

  • @mahmoudibnemir8704
    @mahmoudibnemir8704 3 года назад +16

16:25 In A Bronx Tale the animosity between Italians and Blacks was actually more realistic with both sides chasing those from the other side that came into their neighborhoods. In The Many Saints of Newark, it was almost laughable at how they portrayed one side as some kind of bigoted people and the other as almost Christlike and never had a bad thought about anyone -- I mean, all of the characters on both sides are criminals that would rob and/or murder you given the chance. Sorry, but his point can be somewhat validated by the fact that the movie was a disappointment as a whole. Had Mr. Franzese made a similar point about The Godfather, then you could have made the point that he was being ridiculous. But the whole movie was actually kind of ridiculous and I think David Chase got so much money thrown at him and he wanted to so badly so have a Sopranos project on the big screen that he was forced to include some things that he never would have put in a Sopranos vehicle. And if you don't believe me, then why was he so outraged that it came out in theaters the same day that it was streaming online? That fact alone proves he did not have total control and was forced to bow to outside pressures including possibly having to put in ridiculous sub-plots...

I didn't really like his review. But this doesn't mean that some things that he said are not expected for a casual viewer. Honestly I am a big Sopranos fan but the movie did not really work for me. The plot lines were not very intersting. Harold stuff can be completely taken out and would not mean so much for me. It was rushed. Raised some continuity concerns with what we know from the show. Not a bad movie necessarily but not good either. Just average. I am not in a hurry to watch it again anytime soon. @bogdan Agree with you on it being rushed. There just wasn’t enough context for it to have such a large role in the movie. Like if it was discussed in the show, the relationship between Dickie and Harold, it would make a lot more sense. I just can’t personally recall this relationship being discussed during the Sopranos. Given that, it being a big part of the movie just made no sense to me. I’m just like why am I supposed to care about this? Like thanks for covering this but since it was barely discussed I felt like I was missing something when I watched the movie. Turns out I didn’t. I’m all for the plot but it just didn’t deliver.

Some of the contradictions can be explained as in The Soprano’s flashbacks are from Tony’s POV and he’s an unreliable narrator and the movie is what actually happened. For example, in the show Tony comes home all cocky after his dad is arrested, talking to Livia like he’s an adult, saying he knows what’s up. In the movie Tony is brought home by the cops and is scared of Livia, which is definitely more consistent with what we saw of their present day relationship on the show. Even in most of the flashbacks Tony terrified of his mother and her wrath. Wouldn’t put it past him to remember his younger self being more like the “man” of the house when his dad got arrested versus the terrified child he actually was.

Maybe the Colombos weren't in it that much in his time, but the Bonannos and Gambinos were controlling the East Coast and Mid-West market in the 70's and 80's. Plus the founder of the modern American mafia, Lucky Luciano, was involved in the Trans Atlantic heroin trade from the beginning.

Clarity on Franzese’s viewing of The Sopranos: Yes, he stated something like he’d only seen the first season. More recently, he said he had finished watching all the seasons. Also, I believe he was stating the status of The Sopranos as a great series because it is frequently stated to be so from an objective perspective: apparently the first of its kind as a series, realistic dialogue (much of which, according to David Chase, was taken from federal wiretaps when Giuliani went after them), whole new generation watching, adding to fan base which is STILL growing, etc. The statement isn’t necessarily Franzese offering his opinion.

As someone who is subscribe to Michael‘s RUclips channel and I follow him on social media, I really like Michael a lot and I do think he is a good guy but you hit the nail on the head in this video. I’m not saying because I don’t agree with Michael on a movie that I hate him now and I’m going to be one of these trolls online just harass him endlessly, it’s nothing like that but I had the exact same feelings you did when I watched his review. And like you I am perfectly OK if Michael didn’t like the movie, I enjoyed the movie but I would never say it’s in the top 10 best gangster films of all time or even that it was as good as the Sopranos series even. I admit that the movie did have some problems, I felt like they were trying to slam three stories into a two hour movie and I really do think it would’ve benefited from being a 10 episode series on HBO or something like that.
But yeah just like you my mouth was literally hanging open and listening to Michael‘s review and not only that he contradicted himself probably three times in his review. One minute he sitting there saying that he and his father had black friends and then the next minute he’s admitting that there were a lot of people in the mafia that were prejudiced in the 60s and 70s. And no where in the movie did they blame the race riots on the Italians I don’t know where Michael is getting that from. And to sit here and start shaming mafia guys in a movie because they’re doing bad things but then just months earlier you’re praising other movies that do the exact same thing that your damning this one for was just astonishing. I really think the whole place this was coming from with Michael was really just his political ties. Michael doesn’t hide the fact that he is a Republican and I have no issue with that at all he can be whatever party he wants to be a part of I don’t care but as an American I will tell you this the Americans that have made politics a big part of their life have completely lost the ability to call anything fair or down the middle. They wait to see where their side stands on an issue and then they use no free will or no free thought and they just blindly back that charge and will be willing to die on that political argument. The whole reason conservative sopranos fans hated this movie was because of the riots. They acted like the only reason the riots were in the movie was to show support for BLM.
    1. That argument might have a leg to stand on if in the sopranos universe they never mentioned the riots like the riots in the Sopranos universe just didn’t happen and it was never brought up and never talked about in the series. It was brought up multiple times in the series and we even saw flashbacks to that time in the series. And this series was made way before the BLM movement over a decade before that movement.
    2. It’s not like the movie at any point suggested that Harold and the black gangsters were the good guys just trying to fight off their Italian mafia racist opponents. Nope. Harold was working for Dickie and then he wanted to go into business for himself. At no point in this movie was Harold “The Good Guy” . Harold was just like everyone else in the movie. And I hate to say this because I do respect Michael a lot but dude get over it. It’s a movie about criminals just like Goodfellas and just like the godfather and guess what criminals a lot of them aren’t good people. The movie in no way portrayed one side is good and one side is bad it was just two different criminal factions and really it wasn’t even a war between two factions. It was a fight between two men. Hell we never even once saw Johnny boy or Junior or anyone else even give two shits after Harold and those guys jump them with guns. Apparently they were just worried about killing one of their own. They wanted to kill Dickie well junior date anyway. It’s not even like the mafia guys were after revenge after that.
I just really think that if you go back and look at the week that he did the review and then go back and look at the other videos he was in on the valuentertainment channel around the same time he was really beating the political pulpit and so he was in a political mindset and when Americans get in a political mindset they cannot usually be fair or honest or rational. And both parties are like that I’m not saying that the left isn’t, there are plenty of close minded people on the left too. But it’s really sad because Michael normally is someone who does think things out. Even when he is having a political conversation he doesn’t just normally blindly just support whatever most people on the right think . For example he is one of the few conservatives that will come out and openly say that there is no proof that there was election fraud. Most conservatives today are hell-bent on the only reason Donald Trump lost was because there was election fraud but Michael isn’t one of those people. That’s really why I was just shocked to watch his review. This isn’t the smart Michael that think things out this was a different Michael than I had ever seen before. Anyway thanks for making this video. I don’t know how to make RUclips videos but after watching Michael’s review I almost wanted to do the same kind of video you just did because someone needs to pointed out because there are a lot of people that don’t think you can debate Michael because he was a former mob guy. If we’re talking about the real life going on in the mafia day today then no none of us are qualified to debate him. But in the world of movies and television I think it’s more than ok.
I guess my biggest problem with the people that say that the riots or what made this movie bad smart thing to say because then you’re giving a pass to all of the other issues this movie had and you’re saying if that one thing was left out that this movie would be a perfect movie and it wouldn’t. So it’s not about defending whether or not the movie is good or not it’s more about just calling someone out because they’re contradicting themselves a lot and being very hypocritical when it comes to other mob movies and television shows.

Well, the movie sucked anyway. The marketing made it seem like it was about Tony himself, but instead it was about the things that happened around him. It wasn't even from his point of view. It was from the point of view of his uncle.

Also, why was he so offended by the patricide in this movie when he has literally claimed multiple times that he knew two guys in the mob who had to kill their own father because he broke the rules?

Bruh, that story is a lot different from what happened in the movie. Dickie killed his father out of anger and those two brothers killing their father was a ordered hit.

Didn't his own father try to kill him? Granted, that was business, not a crime of passion, I suppose.

Regardless, if mobsters have killed their own relative many times in the past over business, then someone killing their own father due to rage at him abusing his wife isn't that far fetched. If I remember correctly Dickie also said that his dad used to beat his mom as well and beat him as a kid, so it makes sense.

@@jurajkadasi324 it's not unusual for relatives to kill each other in the mob. Sammy Gravano killed his own brother in law, for instance. Dickie and his father were both criminals with access to weapons, it was bound to happen. Code or no code, they are people at the end of the day.
It's meta-knowledge that Dickie and his brother killed their dad. As far as the rest of Jersey knows, someone else killed him. It's meta-knowledge that Tony kills Christopher, but to everyone else it was an accident.

The story of Franzese and his father walking into Buddah Records and putting a gun to the owners face to steal his money did more to make them look bad. I liked Yummy Yummy.
