i saw her perform this song at the Ark in Ann Arbor Mi. i was setting less than 10 ft from her and could see the tears in her eyes. My most moving experience ever at a concert .
There is no more beautiful cover of this poignant Phil Ochs' song. Tomorrow would have been Phil's 77th birthday. Oh, how I miss his voice for justice and equality, particularly in these times. Thanks Sarah Lee for remembering him.
I have always loved this song. I saw Phil Ochs do it before he died but I think this is the best version I have ever heard. Arlo leaves a legacy in his music and in his children who continue it.
Sarah you are a divine 😇. There's no one on this Earth that could have done this priceless timeless song more justice. Thank you from the deepest part of my heart, mind and soul!
I sing this extra verse. Hope no-one objects. There’s no place in this world you don’t belong, though you’re gone; You help us see the right from the wrong, though you’re gone, And we still hear you singing on your songs though you’re gone, And we’re just so glad you did it while you were here. (Slide over the “were”.)
What a fantastic soulful cover of Phil Ochs' great song. Saw Phil in concert in 1971 at the Troubadour in Los Angeles and I've seen Sarah Lee Guthrie a couple of times here in SoCal. We gotta carry it on--that's what we have to do of course.
There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone You won't find me singing on this song when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here My days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone The sands will be shifting from my sight when I'm gone Can't add my name into the fight when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here I won't see the flowing of the time when I'm gone The joys of love will not be mine when I'm gone My pen won't pour a lyric rhyme when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here I won't breath the bracing air when I'm gone I won't be worried about my cares when I'm gone Can't be asked to do my share when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here I won't be running from the rain when I'm gone Won't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone Can't say who's to praise and who's to blame when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here I won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone The evenings and the mornings will be one when I'm gone Can't be singing louder than the guns when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone I won't question where or when or why when I'm gone Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here
I saw Sarah Lee Guthrie last night at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has the sweetest voice; she sang this song and it was incredible.. After about 30 seconds into the song, I started to cry, and didn't stop until she was finished. I couldn't help myself, I was bewitched by the lyrics and her voice.
Kristy, I was there, too. I'll never forget this song or the a capella version of Woody's I've Got to Know. Love her voice...and she has Arlo's talent for telling a story, too!
Saw her in Portland the other night. Same thing. Cried and cried. When she sang "Deportee", that about finished me. Beautiful spirit runs in the family.
i heard this when she was in Austin on the 21st. i started to cry. it was the last time we saw Geoff Outlaw. he was our beloved neighbor. i miss him so much
I just saw Sarah Lee with her brother & daddy last night as Wilkes-Barre Pa...as much as I knew I'd enjoy the concert, I ended up enjoying it ten times more. A legend with his children who carry on the traditions of the family. Very emotional & completely wonderful evening!
Upon a few days in the hospital recently and the necessity to look at certain things from a different perspective - I found this song and performance very helpful. 😌😔😪
Hey Len! I was there that night... along with John and Reg and bunches of our friends ~one of the most beautiful nights ever. Then again, all ADG/ Guthrie family nights are rhe best of all.
one of my favorite Phil Och's songs along with Changes... I saw Phil Ochs perform in the villiage and the last time I saw him perform at a folk festival in Canada (maybe Mariposa?)
your guitar is bigger than you...nice song great artist...Phil went way too early...your dad must be proud that you are singing his friends/a fellow peers song....you put your heart into this song sarah so i give you a thumbs up....you`re not singing a bubblegum song but a song of meaning...so good for you....
I like Sarah Lee's singing of this moving song better than Phil's. I guess I'm not supposed to. What can I say? I Sarah Lee is Arlo's daughter-Arlo has given us so much, even beautiful children. Sarah Lee is so wonderfully fragile-looking and gentle to me, and so sincere, and her singing reflects those qualities. This song says what I try to live by but fail to most of the time. Thank you for it. And I thank Sarah Lee, Phil Ochs, and Arlo.
Guillotine for both of us, John. But Phil has plenty other great songs he wrote and sang. I doubt Sarah Lee could cover all of them as well as Phil originally sang them (or others covered them). I also loved her cover of Pete Seeger’s “Sailing Down My Golden River.” To me, in this case, both were great but each a bit different. She appeared younger in that video.
It's a lovely cover, but honestly, and as objectively as I can feel it, no; his version is truly more heartfelt and tortured. He was bipolar and I can feel his joy and pain when I hear him singing this song. When I first heard it sometime in the early 1960s I didn't know he was bipolar, but still felt his depths even then. She does a beautiful job, yes, but no one can touch Phil's original, like no one can touch Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah.
There's a great recording on RUclips of Phil singing this song with Sarah Lee's Dad singing Harmony, check it out...Bravo, Sarah, you sound like a devine Angel 👏👏👏

In memory of Phil Ochs, I wrote this song … Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … They’ll turn on him fast, like the hands of his broken clock. Load them double quick, lock and stock. Pick him out of that picket line; and cloud his mind, far worse than doing time. But you go walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … The authorities knew all along Even a broken clock ain’t always wrong So take in your fill of wild oaks As the truth slowly chokes Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … And how many oaks, they joked, to make the Bureau’s file? As it went round the bend, for mile after mile; taking with it Phil and his smile. Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … And to his tune, the trees softly sway first this way and now that But he can’t make it pay So you’d better pass the hat And walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … Yes, walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … Words Ed Fram (1.1.22)

Miss, anyone who sings Phil Ochs does the world good. A seemingly forgotten voice.
Absolutely beautiful. Phil Ochs, though he's gone, will be delighted.

Absolutely! As we said (some of us ha-ha) way back then, "Peace" John. -- John NJ
Yes!!!
I cried because of deep miss of the legends..... she has blood of folks who believe in democracy and justice. Love and be loved.
beautiful, tears in my eyes very heartfelt. Glad Ochs music is being kept alive
amen
She’s the sweetest ever
Watched the Olympia show tonight...The Guthrie name will carry on with Sarah Lee Guthrie.
I have always loved this song. I saw Phil Ochs do it before he died but I think this is the best version I have ever heard. Arlo leaves a legacy in his music and in his children who continue it.
A beautiful voice to carry on the tradition of her father, her grandfather, and Phil Ochs.
More than just a beautiful voice…
Absolutely... In French, l say c'est le même cheminement... From France.
this is so damn beautiful -- Phil would have loved this

+Katherine Thomas I had the same reaction at the show at the Keswick Theatre just before Thanksgiving. I wish she would record these songs.
Saw her in Portland the other night. Same thing. Cried and cried. When she sang "Deportee", that about finished me. Beautiful spirit runs in the family.
Perfect tempo, wonderful guitar and such a beautiful tone and emotion in her voice.

In memory of Phil Ochs, I wrote this song …
Walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …
They’ll turn on him fast,
like the hands of his broken clock.
Load them double quick, lock and stock.
Pick him out of that picket line;
and cloud his mind,
far worse than doing time.
But you go walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …
The authorities knew all along
Even a broken clock ain’t always wrong
So take in your fill of wild oaks
As the truth slowly chokes
Walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …
And how many oaks, they joked,
to make the Bureau’s file?
As it went round the bend,
for mile after mile;
taking with it Phil and his smile.
Walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …
And to his tune, the trees softly sway
first this way and now that
But he can’t make it pay
So you’d better pass the hat
And walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …
Yes, walk the hills
Breathe the beauty of his song
The words are Phil’s
Circling high where they belong …

There is something anti-religious about this song. Think about those lyrics.
not really. there are some religions/philosophies that don’t believe consciousness goes on after death. confucianism is one example
Thanks for the beautiful song ... I love Phil Tis one and Changes are my favorites...I will try to learn guitar from you... a kiss.
Beautiful and moving cover. A pity she's breathing far too often - not good singing technique.
