Family Matters - From Generational Curse to Generational Blessing
1. What is A Generational Curse and Where Does it Come From?
Ex 20:5-6 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the INIQUITY of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected-even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
"Generational Curse" is a negative behavior or sin that is inherited or passed down from one generation to the next. This can involve almost anything: alcoholism, drug addiction, sexual sin, abuse, divorce, certain sickness, etc....
Iniquity is moral illness, perversion, crookedness, distorted, it is
premeditated, continuing, and escalating sin
When left unchecked in families it produces generational curses
These curses are spiritual, mental, emotional, they affect everything
We find in David’s family the curse being passed down
2 Sam 11:4,15 Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. 15 “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”
Ps 51:1-5,7 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. 2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. 3 For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. 4 Against you, and you alone have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Jer 33:8 I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned and by which they have transgressed against Me.
Ps 103:3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
Is 53:5 He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
2. How do We Start the Generational Blessing in our Families
Gen 12:1-3 “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Faith in God’s Blessing took Abraham from cursing into blessing
Gal 3:13-14,21 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith
29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise
Deut 28:32 Your sons and daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be no strength in your hand. (to deliver or save them)
Acts 2:21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Saved (sozo) to heal, cure, preserve, keep safe, rescue from danger or destruction, escape, deliverance.
Ps 128:3 Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table.
