On this day in 1980 {May 31st} Peter McIan performed "Solitaire" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... It had entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on March 30th at position #90; five week later it would peak at #52 {for 1 week} and it spent 7 weeks on the Top 100... He was the producer of the Men at Work's debut album, 'Business As Usual', the album peaked at #1 {for 15 weeks} on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart on November 7th, 1982, it took Michael Jackson's "Thriller' to knock it out of the top spot... Two tracks from the album peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, "Who Can It Be Now?" for 1 week and "Down Under" for 4 weeks...
Peter McIan of course went on as a producer to shape Men At Work's sound on their platinum albums Business As Usual and Cargo, plus Mr. Mister's debut album, I Wear The Face.
Me and my co-worker sang to this ... we remember it ... even thought most people don't! Great jams!!! While I'm at it, does ANYONE remember a song that included the lyrics: SHE'S JUST A FRIEND OF A FRIEND; NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE HER AGAIN; SO DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE; SHE DON'T MEAN NOTHING TO ME ..... ??? It's not BIZMARKIE ... but several of us LOCALS have been searching for this one FOR YEARS .... nothing on internet ... but this song was #52 on the charts .... so we are hoping someone; ANYONE; knows the other song we are looking for ....
I've been looking for this song for twenty plus years; didn't even know who sung it until four years ago. LOL, there's a zillion "solitaire" songs. Whoever posted it, thanks a bunch!
I always liked this song. I remember running out to get the album. In 1980 in only got to number 52 on the pop charts. I always thought Michael McDonald should have remade this.
Hey Peter - you produced an album for me and my mates at Plynth Studios in Libertyville Ill in about 1973. The band was Sweet Nothin', renamed Lightway.
Probably my favorite 1980s era song. I searched a long time before finding it on mp3. If I had not found this video today I was going to have to break down and figure out how to make one myself. I have the entire "Playing on the Edge" album in mp3 format. Link me some instructions and I will try to make a youtube vid out of it.
With just a little better guidance Peter should've been much bigger. He had an attractive voice, great backing, this LP was actually well produced. The material good as it was, did need a little more punch and edge to create a more original approach. It would've elevated him the way Men at Work's (who Peter produced) Colin Hay managed to sustain a solo career. And damn, more saxophone -- David Luell's sax really helped on this wonderful song. Lots of potential...but just one album. Why?
@@Randall-dg6wn He has the same growling bluesy voice that Seger used when he was hitting the charts at the end of his big run. The lyrics are also similar to Seger's themes of loneliness and hopelessness ("Mainstreet").
@Scott Larson ...... I don't have to look anything up. I had the Peter McIan 45 and I currently have his LP. I also have every single album and every recording on CD that Bob Seger ever released. There's no one who knows more about Bob Seger's recordings than I do. Bob Seger and Peter McIan sound nothing alike ... Period, end of discussion.
You are wrong, this is NOT Peter McIan's only single ..... He had two. "Light In Your Eyes" was the uncharted 2nd single from his album, PLAYING NEAR THE EDGE.

This is such a great song to have fallen through the crack. Should have been top 10.
Funny, a song about a game played with a 52-card deck reaches #52 on the charts. :-)
Can't believe only got to 52 this is an awesome song. Reminds me of graduation 1980 at Panama City Beach
A fine lost pop rock gem.
