Definitely a great review, since I have the same loco, I am able to answer some of your questions in regards to the Hornby Railroad A1 Flying Scotsman. Tender pickups are not really fitted on the DCC ready version so basically, the tender is just a simple rolling stock. the DCC ready version does have a 3 pole motor, so therefore, the DCC fitted TTS sound version has a 5 pole motor, personally I'm not too fussed about the motor as I'm happy with how the 3 pole motor does it's job. The DCC ready version would normally be coded as product R3086 and R1167 in the train set version. I personally like the metal unsprung buffers which is a great improvement to the fragile molded plastic buffers. The weight of the loco is definitely impressive enough for it to pull a maximum 12 coaches up a gradient according to some reviews which is also a great improvement over previous versions that struggled with 5 coaches on a gradient which I have also seen physically as well, mainly the tender driven versions being the common ones, so basically I'm grateful the loco is loco driven. I like how the loco has NEM pockets which allow you to easily change your NEM tension lock couplers to any NEM coupler whether it be european or american. Personally for me, I fitted NEM no. 19 Kadee knuckle couplers to it as the club I'm with has a compulsory Kadee coupler policy which is easier as can simply pull the NEM tension lock coupler out and insert an NEM Kadee coupler in than having to get the drill and hobby glue to retrofit no. 5 kadees with some trial and error which is still common with previous versions of the Scotsman that don't have NEM pockets. Definitely a great model, the only modification I had to make was to fit no. 19 kadees to it as well as regauge the wheels on both the loco and tender, except the pony wheels to comply with National Model Railroad Association standards gauge due to the loco derailing on my club's handbuilt points that were built to NMRA standards and after hearing over in America that it does derail on a lot of American points, particularly Atlas points, even the older versions, especially tender driver ones still do that. After some research showed that a lot of Hornby wheels didn't comply with NMRA standards, before regauging, the loco would only like Hornby which their points are not NMRA compliant, Peco points are fine and are NMRA complaint and other brands of HO and OO gauge trains around the world like them as well. Roco points the Scotsman has no problem with. After regauging, the loco seems to perform better on any points, particularly my club's handbuilt ones and possibly Atlas if I get the chance. Although the points will be a different story. Other than that, the Hornby Railroad A1 Flying Scotsman is definitely an excellent model, I'll even admit that I bought a second one to use for spare parts as well. I'm even surprised that the loco has lasted 3 years of putting up with a lot of wear and tear and still keeps going like a soldier from WWII without even giving up.
Thanks very much for all the info mate - I'm fairly sure that both versions have a 3 pole motor though - mine almost certainly does! £110 is an awful lot considering there's no tender pickups either! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for your interesting comments! Just commented that mine tends to derail from time to time, as you noted. I didn't know that Hornby wheels do not meet NMRA standards. Shame on Hornby.
@@MrShepardDog Hornby follow a different standard which is Great Britain standard as they are mainly OO. NMRA standards is mainly for HO, mostly American, Canadian and Asian and also already being part of Australian. NEM standards is mainly for European models.
@modeltrainlover3 kejwjma maybe your trackwork needs to be checked, also trains cannot go fast around tight curves due to the centrifugal force, even the slightest bump on straight track can derail a model train. I’ve run my Flying Scotsman model at the club at full scale 100mph and it has not derailed at all, especially on the slightest bumps on my club’s trackwork and also on their gentler curves.
I just got this as part of the Flying Scotsman train set. Crazy that the RRP fr the engine alone is nearly as much as the whole set. With that said, I'm really pleased with it. Sure, the detail is lacking in certain spots as is to be expected for an entry level model, but it runs really nicely, even with the cheapo starter set controller and it still looks really nice overall.
I just scored a used Flying Scotsman set on Hattons with 4 coaches included for 110. Seemed reasonable to me in these times. Hopefully it's in good shape and runs well. Missing the 2 points from the set. I bought it partly for the 4 coaches, Perhaps I can use the track for a Christmas layout!
@The Stephenson's rocket 2019 my pop has a photo of the old girl at Flinders Street Station in melbourne, which is in the exact same state as me, melbourne is in victoria and i live in victoria
I was actually looking at one of these on Hattons, I'm in the states, but I've been wanting a Scotsman. And I really like the original A1 build, with the original Tenders, and they actually had a Flying Scotsman in its original build for around 189 pounds.
Very nice review Sam, in regards to prices I can completely understand where you're coming from, as my friend has been getting into the hobby and is now wanting to get either a Flying Scotsman or Tornado. I have been able to advise him about the prices of model shops for these locos compared to Hornby and even Amazon. Hopefully Hornby will see sense in the future for these models
Thanks a lot Paul - I just think these need to be priced more sensibly, given the fragility of Hornby in the first place - they need to be more attractive to customers, and prices like that just aren't to me! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
oo tornado or flying scot, tough choice but i prenatally see a couple options in saying we are sticking to hornby. there's the two hornby ranges and then there is train sets . now i say and train sets just because you get more for your money, well for the most part. Not sure if this is a one case scenario but at Argos you can get the "Tornado Pullman Express" with track, loco and coaches and erm for better words a cheap and nasty "controller" or you can get the railroad loco by its self and what i dont get is they are the same price. now if i was to compare the tornado and scot honestly id say it was down to the locos history both are remarkable and respectable in the history for Steam preservation but i dont see the justification of price gap, maybe its because of the public take for instance the one time there was a blue flying Scotsman (www.hornby.com/uk-en/forum/blue-flying-scotsman-in-premier-set-for-marks-spencer/?p=1) the price for it well you could say it's worth its weight in gold. back to the subject point its quiet hard to make a definitive answer, but i would personally say for your friend because he is starting out by the sounds of it to me i'd personally recommend the tornado pullman an Argos exclusive (and I'm assuming your friend Paul lives in the uk) simply because I think its the better value for money for someone who is starting in this hobby
I actually have locomotives from years back, I’ve fixed locos at a beginner at the beginning of this year my Fleischmann BR 01 220 is my pride and joy, it’s so beautiful and my farther bought it for me in February in a second hand model shop in Germany for 69 euros with a lot of beautiful coaches! I’m only 12 and I fixed an entire Lima set this year, cleaning the track, servicing the motor, lubricating the axels. And I’m loving it! Sam please take a look at the Fleischmann BR 01 220 it has lights, smoke and is beautifully detailed and even made in 1970 my Lima Blue Train is from 1980!
An awesome locomotive. I'm probably ordering this myself. I've got quite a few locomotives in my set, and this one is one that takes me back. I used to go to these events - until the pandemic, that is.
Technically, “the flying Scotsman’s” is actually the name of the train route, as some other locomotives had pulled the train and had the head board “Flying Scotsman”
That is half true, Flying Scotsman is the name of both the particular line, but also of the LNER 4472 The Flying Scotsman, which just confuses the issue
I have the flying Scotsman as an A1, I got it back in 2014 for my 6th birthday. It was my first ever model. Her crawl is very impressive, great review!
Brilliant. Pretty good for a railroad model. But yeah... FS lost her corridor tender in the 30s. She was then converted to an A3 in 1946, but it wasn't until 1954 that she was changed to left hand drive.
Sam'sTrains but I do agree with you "rant" about Hornby's pricing and it putting people off, especially when you look at some of it and think "that's not even worth 3x that!" It does give model shops a big chance to shift units, but I don't think Hornby have much of a chance, especially with the likes of Hattons making their own products and Bachmann seemingly trancing them for quality and price, in many areas. (Agree...?)
What do you think of €60 for a king Arthur class, Excalibur, the super detailed one without the outer railroad sleeve or detail pack but otherwise as new?
I, in America, have this model, it didn't come with TTS sound, though, so it didn't come with power from the tender. It's still an amazing runner and I haven't had any issues with, other than when I bought it, in which the connecting rods got stuck on each other, but that hasn't happened ever since 2018. All in all, I would recommend this loco, whether it be with TTS sound or not, to anyone who wants to get into model trains.
well, its an older version more details letters. because mine does have sprung buffers, more detaild lettering and the coal load is a bit more chubby. i got her for 50 pounds at a hobby store in Edinburgh, while im on vacation in scotland.
This design was based on the Pensalvainia railroads k4 Pacific Easy was to tell difference between an a1 and a3 is the plates on the top of the smoke box around the handrail. If it has those plates it's an a3 if it doesn't have them it's an a1 because the superheated was too big for the smokebox Mine is now awaiting it's TRIRD set of rods (it is waiting in a siding with tender and rods removed) because it's bogie hits the walschearts gears hit off on 3rd radius curves and it doesn't even have tender pickups and before its tender broke so I had to modify my spere triang tender to run her with and the steps in front of the bogie both snapped off when the wheels launched themselves at them. On my rankings it got 28/50
Sometimes I rewatch your reviews of locos I like to see them run and sometimes I forget what you rated them. And the whole rant at 15:03 really resonated with me. As a kid I loved Thomas, and they sold the set for about 80 dollars (63.42 pounds) , so my parents got me one for Christmas, but as I got into my teen years I wanted the real locos, but I couldn’t because the locos, rolling stock, and even buildings were so expensive. I don’t know about regular locos, but I remember I got Percy for just 40 dollars (31.71 pounds), and now I’ve recently saw that you’d be lucky to get a Thomas model for 80 dollars. That’s just sad. And it’s just gotten worse. So thank you for putting into words just how important it is to make model railroading affordable so people of all ages and incomes can be involved in the hobby.
Sam another great review and video. I wholeheartedly agree with you about the pricing issue. Companies like Hornby need to realize they are in essence killing the hobby for the younger folks without substantial amounts of money. It was good of you to call them out and also alert potential modelers about the shop. Well done lad!
Thanks mate - really glad you liked the video - I agree - beginners will probably visit the Hornby site first, and I hate to think of people seeing those prices - it makes the hobby look bad! Thanks for the support, Sam :)
Good review Sam - thanks. I have the TTS sound fitted, and she’s lovely. I was very fortunate to get her new from a local toy shop that was getting rid of all their Hornby stock, and managed to do a deal for just over £80. I’ve heard bad things about TTS sound for steam locos, but I’m pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sound. In general I agree with the pricing for the non sound Rail Road version being rather steep. Having said that the RRP for the sound version isn’t so bad when you consider the cost of the TTS sound decoder and speaker as a separate item.
Thanks a lot Fred - blimey £80 is very good for the TTS version! Yeah I can't say anything bad about TTS either - it's always worked very well for me! Yeah this is true - but the TTS decoders can be bought for £30-£40 on their own, so it shouldn't be all that much extra! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's a nice looking Flying Scotsman locomotive! I've also seen this trained multiple times in pictures. They even have this train in the Train Sim app I remember driving it around while it's carrying passenger cars. And he even made his appearance in Thomas & Friends back in 2016. It would've been cool if there was a Hornby version of the Flying Scotsman that has 2 tenders. One tender for coal (LNER), and one tender for water (4472).
Thanks a lot for the comment - yes this is definitely a very popular engine! Hornby are doing a 2-tender version this year, but it's certainly not cheap! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the one out of their “train set” it is surprisingly similarly detailed. It is DCC ready, not tender pickups, (how does one go about fitting them?). Also the tender is connected by a peg on the engine that passes through a hole on the tender coupling. The boiler hand rails are simply just mouldings.
At least you got options on your side of the pond, I paid $189.99 off amazon r1167 set engine 3 coaches. Always wanted a flying Scotsman train set when I was growing up. Great video Sam, thanks.
Hello Sam’s trains. To answer your question, the DCC ready versions which is the one I have don’t have tender pickups, it only has loco pickups. However, the only advantage out of that is it makes setting up the loco and makes maintenance easier for myself as I don’t have to constantly plug and unplug the wire harness to the tender and accidentally break a wire if I needed to say test the motor after some general maintenance like lubricating for example. The DCC ready version only has a 3 pole motor which although may not be the best motor for some people, but it does the job and hasn’t failed me for 3 years so far, especially when it’s under the control of hyper junior members. The metal unstrung buffers are a good advantage over the fragile plastic damage prone buffers. The red and yellow railroad packaging for the railroad DCC ready Flying Scotsman product no. R3086 has been recently replaced with a presentable green packaging in recent times, but the model remains the same. Hopefully that answers your question on pickups.
Sorry to hear that mate - I've had a few of those too :( Yeah the princesses did have decent motors - mine's never been a problem either! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Amazing review. -perhaps in the future, you could get a scrap A1 and give Hornby or Bachmann Gordon it's Corridor tender, repainting it NWR blue and the number 4 in it-
And so that's why we have you Sam, to point out these things. I have seen so many young people doing videos on RUclips for railroad modelling. It's the media for all ages today, old and young.
If ever I bump into someone whose children want a model railway, I'll tell them to watch as many of your videos FIRST, including this one warning about price gouging on the Hornby website, before spending a penny. Oh, it might be a good idea to produce a video devoted to which model shops offer the best deals too. I think cash strapped parents will appreciate that! Indeed, if ever I have the chance to indulge and bring back some childhood memories, you'll be my first port of call before opening the wallet, though at my age, if I do indulge, I'd probably want to treat myself to some quality items. :) Nice to see someone being honest in their reviews!
A good and honest review Sam, totally agree with your comments regarding Hornby's Railroad locos. What concerns me these days, is that the coupling rods on all these locos are so fine, they don't last long when running long sessions, so to pay over £100 for it to be stuck in a display case is ludicrous!....Regards...Bob
Thanks Robert - yeah exactly, they just don't suit beginners the way they are supposed to... I think I'm starting to miss the point! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review mate! Yeah I got one of these late last year and I'd have to agree, mine has tts so that's bonus but there's a few things that I would change ; the tender seems to sit a bit higher to one end, the smoke box door is a bit squint and the motor seems to speed up and slow down ever so slightly at higher speeds. All things I can manage but if the motor gives up then I'll no doubt be able to get a replacement easy enough. I've added real coal and done some light weathering to mind and she looks stunning. All the best mate --- Ben
wow! the good old flying Scotsman.. What a funny tale she is! Scraped, Stranded in America, having heaps for different owners, being rebuit, Hahah! the list could go on! but still non the less a lovely model! loved the review! Sam :D
Gday from Australia Sam, I wanted to know if the Flying Scotsman Is tender driven or Loco Driven, that would be a great help, cheers mate, love your stuff, very informative
I have a flying Scotsman set and this review helped me make a decision on it. I also got 3 more coaches for it and it runs amazingly on my Bachmann ez tracks even with the unpowered tender. I would like to get a railway version but please do a review for us when they release one with the corridored tender. They also need to add that feature for the Mallard since it was one of Gresley's most genius designs.
Thanks Sam for reviewing the flying scotsman as I have the exact model and coaches and remember when I recommended reviewing this one to compare it with your old one
Hahaha thanks and yes I do think the price is crazy I got my scotsman from a set for £125 so the locomotive was probably £80 but she is a good model and it's my most ran model
Another great vid! Love this channel, so friendly and has a warm feeling of a community. Fans are great with no bad comments. Sam mate, keep doing what your doing, you create great content and deserve the fans you have on the channel!
Thanks so much mate - really glad you like the channel! I really appreciate the support - and I'll do my best to keep the videos coming! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i wish you could run the coaches with the oval windows. i was sorting through some old magazines i had and found an old catalogue that i had in the 70;s and it had my old train sets in it, including the flying scotsman
I recently purchased the Railroad version and constantly got derailments on straight runs over express points. None of my other 40 plus engines have this problem.I was shocked to see how many people were having this problem when I went on the Hornby site. It appears to be a front bogey problem. Slowing down video footage shows this clearly. I am surprised you have not had this problem on your carpet set up Sam. Have to admit I am somewhat disappointed in the engine as this should not happen. Keep up the good work Sam.
Sorry to hear that Simon - that doesn't sound right! Could you maybe upload a video showing the issue? I'd be interested to see it up close! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I have just completely changed my layout. I will get the engine out in the next couple of days and see if the new display throws up the same problem. I am using the same points etc. We will see. Lovely engine nevertheless less. Wish I had purchased an older version though with a bit of a pedigree. Any thoughts to the best Flying Scotsman out there (not expensive)?
Actually managed to get a run out tonight with the Flying Scotsman. Certainly much better with the new layout, which proves 'it's not always the engine'. The track is tighter barring a few wobbly bits here and there, but to be expected on a 12 ft x 6ft board layout.Over powerful in my opinion and on max speed still manages to derail one in three circuits. It really is powerful and like the D16's, far too fast for its own good. Take it down a notch (let's be realistic here) and it runs very well. The tender is too light in my opinion but when it runs well it runs very well. I'll be watching on Sunday and thanks for your feedback and interest. Still like to know your opinion on the best Flying Scotsman out there (within a sensible budget). All the best.
Thanks a lot! Yeah that's what I see too - Hornby need to start thinking ahead, when people like that might not be with us any more.... at this rate, Hornby won't be with us in 20 years, which is troubling to me :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've got a Hornby Flying Scotsman but it doesn't have TTS sound, she's loco driven, great video by the way, I saw the flying scotsman down at Bluebell Railway in April last year which was awesome:)
If your on DCC in the running session how are you controlling multiple trains? And also I think this is the first time I’ve seen you unsatisfied with the price of a locomotive, and I totally agree
My model runs smoothly even at a slowish speed without her tender on and I agree with you on how Hornby can attract new younger customers as I don want the hobby to die out as well as it my favourite hobby and means a lot to me.
That's good to hear - obviously it hasn't affected her performance too much then! I feel the same - I want the Hobby to carry on :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I’m not an expert but when I first got this model within its first session one of its rods got stuck on one of the bolts and that caused it to spark and the motor to break, I had to make the beam bent so it didn’t catch again because there was a dent in it
The flying scotsman actually went past my house in Edinburgh there's a branch line near my house that has a cut off to go over the Forth railway bridge it was amazing
Omg I remember this video so long ago, I’m getting the flying Scotsman set for Christmas. (P.S I’m the person who commented on the Bachman Gordon vs Hornsby Gordon hope you remember me my name was spacenate2006)
I may get one some day - but I assume it'd be pretty similar to the A4 one actually - which has played on my channel before! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Today I got my very first ever model engine. It was of the flying Scotsman which is why I’m commenting this on this video. I don’t know what company made it and it’s super beat up but I figured it’s still the flying Scotsman, one of the most iconic engines. Plus I got it for four bucks. It’s never gonna run but I’m glad to have it just to look at it. And I’m glad my first model engine could be one that’s super iconic.
That's fantastic to hear mate - really hope you get on well with your Scotsman - that's pretty awesome for four bucks!!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I picked one of these up as a spare (because I am paranoid and could not stand being without a Flying Scotsman) And I payed a equivalent of 55 pounds from Hattons. But ya now ya I have Scott Jr, who is on call if Scott needs to take a sick day. And also one A1 was not rebuilt as a A3 and that was Great Norther which was rebuilt by Thomson into the hideous A1/1. And Thomson most likely chose Grate Northern because it was the first and as we all know he did not care for Gresley.
Hi Sam I bought a dcc ready one about the same time this video was uploaded brand new it cost me $170. In comparison my p2 railroad version that I had preordered was only $159. You'd think a well established model would be cheaper than a brand new tooled locomotive
HORNBY!! Wow, thanks for introducing me to Hattons and Rails of Sheffield, I’ll be sure to buy from them when I start buying models. On that, I recently got two vintage O scale model trains and track. When I get home College, I’ll send you some pics for the next stream and hall of fame. Hope the LNER boys acted polite to the Princess 😉 cheers Sam.
14:24 that's equal to $150 US Dollars, which is $50 less than what I've seen for the Flying Scotsman complete starter set! Even Amazon UK sells a Hornby Railroad non-DCC Scotsman engine for £83.45! The most I'd pay for this engine without DCC sound would be $70 US!
I’d love a model of Flying Scotsman, during her American tour. I know the added equipment looked a bit haphazard, but I’m American, and I’m proud that such an iconic loco once ran on American rails.
I suspect Hattons and Rails have old stock so are able to charge lower price? Also if Rails have taken the TTS module out, they'll likely charge full retail price for it on fleabay so will be close to 100 quid they get all told. Prices are silly though. I recently bought a new Bachmann Class 47 for £105. The same shop is now selling new stock of the same model for £139! guess I bought just at the right time :)
Yeah that may be true - though to be fair, these are so basic, I wouldn't suggest paying more than £70 for one anyway! Oh blimey yeah - almost got ripped off there ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I bought one today, took it home and it was dead. Took it back to the shop, they replaced it with another one exactly the same, tested it at the shop and seemed to be working fine. Then took it home and it just short circuited the track. Very unhappy with the quality and will be returning it tomorrow. Hopefully the replacement will work fine.
@@SamsTrains Thanks mate, the store was more than helpful and got me going with a new engine and helped with my track layout. All I have to say is I wish I started off on regular DC instead of DCC. Cheers.
I've thought about buying this, and a cheap USA steam engine, and some Kaydee couplers. Since I don't think there is an official USA Tour model of Flying Scotsman.
Very nice model Sam...Ive the got the 5 pole tender drive version of this...from the set which I bought seperately on its own new...I personally think the one from the set is the best one cause it's a decent runner and the numbers are done correctly to look 3d not to mention the paint is a nice shade of green...that's my opinion anyway lol. Infact speaking of tender drive locos have you ever tried any of the old 2 rail fleischmann locos?...their motors are excellent and they are built very well...the locos are different but nice.
That's fair enough mate - I know the tender driven ones were reliable, at the very least! I have had a few of the fleichmann ones to service, but I've never owned one! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another informative thought provoking brilliant video Sam. When i hear or see the word HORNBY i drift of into a world of my own. I adore this hobby and have done since 1973. Is the A1 you have acquired a original tooled 1980's locomotive made to look a bit better for the market the engine is aiming at ? Yes i want to see new and younger people getting in to our obsession ( model railways ) but people have been saying since the Attari 77 that toy trains as it was back in those days would go out of fashion, but they are still here today. Yes Hornby have been in trouble for a long time but they are raising the game alot. On day BACHMANN might get it right. You separate the men from the boys from the price of his toys. The locomotive you have reviewed was for young man probably paid for by his parents with no insight and or knowledge of where to find the cheapest locomotive. You were totally correct about the price Hornby charge for that locomotive on their website. It's a rip off for a VERY VERY dated locomotive. Once again thank you Sam great video 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚅
Cracking model really. Currently in the process of converting one into an A3. BR blue, smoke deflectors, corridor tender, number 60070 Gladiateur. I don't care for realism on it as my planned layout is a heritage line if more engine's survived
I purchased the more expensive version of this, Hornby R3736. It is good looking and highly detailed with a smooth 5-pole motor. It is a joy to look at and watch. But... First one arrived over here in the States with badly bent driving rods on one side; returned it for replacement. This 2nd one arrived with one driving rod very slightly bent -- barely noticeable, so I kept this one. Note: You must be careful where you place your hand when picking this one up -- your fingers could squeeze and bend a delicate driving rod by accident quite easily. Also -- the L-shaped fitting under the cab was missing. Not even in the box! Shame on Hornby for having such poor quality control in their Chinese factory. Others have complained of various quality issues -- missing bits, glue spots, etc. that should not happen on a loco that costs $200 - $300 USD. My other major disappointment is -- the front steering truck is very light on the rails. Whenever it hits the slightest gap where rail ends join, it tends to go off the track, causing the loco to derail. The front truck is just too darn sensitive; you must have perfectly smooth track, all the way. It doesn't derail all the time; about once every ten laps around the circuit. A loco such as this should fill you with joy -- and NOT anxiety -- always wondering -- when will it derail next?? I wonder if anyone else has this problem......
Thanks a lot for sharing - sorry to hear about your mishaps - yes you must be careful not to touch the rods as you lift the model, always use the body! The Hornby A1s and A3s are riddled with quality issues - I have a review of one coming pretty soon! You're right - we shouldn't need to feel anxious about running an expensive loco! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Looks nice and for a good price. I think the recommended price is too high and I am not sure if it is not a mistake for Hornby to make two different classes of model. Oh, and I hope to be going on a jolly English train trip in the Summer to Devon from Weston super Mare.
Thanks Ian - I agree - I like the idea of the Railroad Range, but it defeats the point if it costs the same as the main range, being far inferior with their detail as they are! Have a great time mate - hope you see some nice engines! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
hi sam, I agree with what you say, locos are too expensive for children these days. luckily I got my 4472 on ebay for 50pounds that is without sound. well we never had sound in the sixties.but this 4472 does have brute force in pulling power
Hi Peter - I think £50 is much more like it for this - a very good spot there! I agree - the sound isn't really necessary... at least they're good runners! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice review Sam! I have got one of these from the train set and it doesn't have any pickups in the tender. My Flying Scotsman has lasted for several years... and still looks brand new. I really want Hornby to make their locos cheaper so I and others can afford locos so you can pick specific locos and allow people to make lengthy trains and have different exiting trains. If you want to see bargain locos go to Budget Model Railways and they talk about prices. I don't bother with new Hornby locos I use Lima locos or older Hornby and Bachmann... But it is a good loco the Flying Scotsman..
Thanks Donald - yeah that's quite typical of the non-dcc sound versions - which I guess I got lucky with! Using older locos is a good call though - they're super reliable too! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Something I've wondered after buying this model is does the hornby tts tornado have tender pickups? If I does I think you'd be better off buying that than the normal railways one!

Thanks very much for the comment mate - really glad you like my reviews, I appreciate that mate!
Thanks for watching,

Scotsman is the last A3 of its kind just like green arrow is the last V2.
Sam, I think you have an amazing talent: you are able to make ANY engine look good! (I love this flying scotsman :D)
Ahh you're very kind - thanks so much for your kind words mate! :D

Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I know its a while but the R3284TTS version def has 5 Pole Skew Wound motor Mine has and Hornby tech spec page confirms
Hi Sam what an absolutely beautiful model of Flying Scotsman I got to see her and go behind her too. She’s easily my favourite.
Amazing model. Gresley sure knew how to produce fantastic locomotives.
Thanks a lot Jacob - yes he definitely did! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam another good choice I love the flying scotsman even though I am a Australian that lives in Britain still love the flying scotsman... Freya
Thanks very much Freya - glad to hear you're still a Scotsman fan! :D

I was actually looking at one of these on Hattons, I'm in the states, but I've been wanting a Scotsman. And I really like the original A1 build, with the original Tenders, and they actually had a Flying Scotsman in its original build for around 189 pounds.
Ahh fantastic - they're certainly not bad, just don't spend much on the Railroad one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh my goodness! thank you I’ve been waiting so long for this video ;)
haha no problem mate - hope you enjoy the video! :D

I actually used to have this flying Scotsman as a kid but I had a train set with the lner teak coaches and I used to love it
Very nice review Sam, in regards to prices I can completely understand where you're coming from, as my friend has been getting into the hobby and is now wanting to get either a Flying Scotsman or Tornado.
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks paul
oo tornado or flying scot, tough choice but i prenatally see a couple options in saying we are sticking to hornby. there's the two hornby ranges and then there is train sets . now i say and train sets just because you get more for your money, well for the most part.
Awesome model.
Thank you! :D
yeah I like the moddle it s so cool
An awesome locomotive. I'm probably ordering this myself.
I've got quite a few locomotives in my set, and this one is one that takes me back.
I used to go to these events - until the pandemic, that is.
Awesome Kris, hope you enjoy it! Yes such a pity about the events being cancelled - hopefully all will be normal soon!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Technically, “the flying Scotsman’s” is actually the name of the train route, as some other locomotives had pulled the train and had the head board “Flying Scotsman”
Yes you're absolutely right, that's a good point!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ahh fantastic - glad to hear that - they are awesome models! :D

Brilliant. Pretty good for a railroad model.
But yeah... FS lost her corridor tender in the 30s. She was then converted to an A3 in 1946, but it wasn't until 1954 that she was changed to left hand drive.
Thanks Phil! Ah okay, that makes sense, being that she's shown as an A1 here! Thanks for the comment mate,
Sam :)
If that's legit, then it sounds like a very good price! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
It is, I know because I bought it for that thinking it was only a railroad model at the Wexford model railway club exhibition on Easter Sunday.
I, in America, have this model, it didn't come with TTS sound, though, so it didn't come with power from the tender. It's still an amazing runner and I haven't had any issues with, other than when I bought it, in which the connecting rods got stuck on each other, but that hasn't happened ever since 2018. All in all, I would recommend this loco, whether it be with TTS sound or not, to anyone who wants to get into model trains.
i got this model second hand today
Ooh that's awesome - hopefully you got a bargain! Enjoy her mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
well, its an older version more details letters. because mine does have sprung buffers, more detaild lettering and the coal load is a bit more chubby. i got her for 50 pounds at a hobby store in Edinburgh, while im on vacation in scotland.
Thanks for adopting and nor buying from a breader
This design was based on the Pensalvainia railroads k4 Pacific
Easy was to tell difference between an a1 and a3 is the plates on the top of the smoke box around the handrail. If it has those plates it's an a3 if it doesn't have them it's an a1 because the superheated was too big for the smokebox
Mine is now awaiting it's TRIRD set of rods (it is waiting in a siding with tender and rods removed) because it's bogie hits the walschearts gears hit off on 3rd radius curves and it doesn't even have tender pickups and before its tender broke so I had to modify my spere triang tender to run her with and the steps in front of the bogie both snapped off when the wheels launched themselves at them. On my rankings it got 28/50
That's very cool Luke - I didn't know that! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Will you build a train track set for a round house
I'd like that - it'd be awesome - but I don't have any plans to right now! :D

Hi Sam great video again.
Thanks Jens - glad you enjoyed it mate! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Thanks for the support,
Sam :)
I bought a DCC and TTS for 110£
That's pretty good actually - slightly better than Hornby's RRP anyway! Hope you enjoy her mate :3
Thanks for watching,

It was on a heritage railway
What a steal!!
Got this when it first came with TTS had the 3D 4472 & LNER done . And to say it as the 3 pole motor it's a flyer with 8 coaches behind her.
Ahh fantastic! Yes I've found mine works pretty well, despite the motor!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I have this model, but the piston broke, so I'm looking at getting a replacement.
I got mine for £45
Very good price - well spotted!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)

Hellooo - well done!! :D

Hacky Iz here hello welcome
Great video sam, did you know the a1s had a thrid cylinder under the smokebox which drove the first wheel set instead of the second
Thanks Oskar! Yeah it's a very clever Gresley design - I suppose it gave them all that power! :D

I got this model January 2020 and it was terribly jerky in running. It has just had it's motor changed at Hornby in December 2020! But runs well now
Ahh glad to hear they sorted that out for you - good one! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
I love the flying Scotsman so much, I bought a NRM special edition one and she runs so smooth.
Yeah me too - the NRM ones are amazing, I know this for a fact!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes this will be the same as the train set ones just with no tender pickups - they can be fitted, but it's quite a job!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
At least you got options on your side of the pond, I paid $189.99 off amazon r1167 set engine 3 coaches. Always wanted a flying Scotsman train set when I was growing up. Great video Sam, thanks.
Blimey yeah - that does seem quite a lot for one of these, though they are lovely sets! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Steamie - yeah you are absolutely right actually - and I find that really terrible of Hornby, given the prices!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Mine had to go back to Hornby. Glowing motor.
The Princess Royals ( I have five) have a lovely motor.

Nice to see someone being honest in their reviews!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks a lot mate - glad you got the tts too! Ahh okay - that's very interesting - hopefully the motor won't give up!!

Good comment about pricing driving away young railroaders. When I look at vids of train shows, grey is the dominant hair color (when there is hair).
Thanks a lot! Yeah that's what I see too - Hornby need to start thinking ahead, when people like that might not be with us any more.... at this rate, Hornby won't be with us in 20 years, which is troubling to me :(

If your on DCC in the running session how are you controlling multiple trains? And also I think this is the first time I’ve seen you unsatisfied with the price of a locomotive, and I totally agree
DCC allows you to run multiple trains at once, so that's how I did it! And yeah - this one did disappoint me :(

My model runs smoothly even at a slowish speed without her tender on and I agree with you on how Hornby can attract new younger customers as I don want the hobby to die out as well as it my favourite hobby and means a lot to me.
That's good to hear - obviously it hasn't affected her performance too much then! I feel the same - I want the Hobby to carry on :(

I still personally love my A3 Flying Scotsman return to steam edition (R3336)
Thanks for the comment mate - I agree, they are fantastic really! :D

That's amazing - that must have been so cool! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I watched this and instantly went online and bought it I love it so much.

Sam you should get the tts sound decoder for your Flying Scotsman, I'd love to hear the sounds.
I may get one some day - but I assume it'd be pretty similar to the A4 one actually - which has played on my channel before! :D

Ahh sounds good Warren - did it work okay??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No problem Patrick - have fun on Hatton's and Rails' website! That's fantastic - have fun with your new goodies! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
That sounds awesome, I'd love to get one too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh blimey yeah - almost got ripped off there ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
my flying scotsman train set just came in and i love it
I bought one today, took it home and it was dead. Took it back to the shop, they replaced it with another one exactly the same, tested it at the shop and seemed to be working fine. Then took it home and it just short circuited the track. Very unhappy with the quality and will be returning it tomorrow. Hopefully the replacement will work fine.
Ahh sorry to hear that mate - hope you can get a good one my friend!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah that's not a bad idea! Hornby did do a USA tour version - but it's quite rare and expensive!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks so much Mark! Really glad to hear that, and thanks for sharing your thoughts too - I do agree with you!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cracking model really. Currently in the process of converting one into an A3. BR blue, smoke deflectors, corridor tender, number 60070 Gladiateur. I don't care for realism on it as my planned layout is a heritage line if more engine's survived
Thanks Jake! ooh that's a brilliant idea - good luck with it mate, it sounds lovely! :D

Ahhhh a classic ever since 1923! Great video
haha absolutely! Thanks a lot mate!
Cheers,
Sam :)

Sam :)
hi sam, I agree with what you say, locos are too expensive for children these days. luckily I got my 4472 on ebay for 50pounds that is without sound. well we never had sound in the sixties.but this 4472 does have brute force in pulling power
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Can a OO Scale train run on HO scale track? really curious about what i can buy for christmas.
Yeah they can! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Thanks, just need an experts opinion and answer.
The dcc ready models don't have tender pickups.
Yes that's true actually! Making the price all the more crazy ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Something I've wondered after buying this model is does the hornby tts tornado have tender pickups? If I does I think you'd be better off buying that than the normal railways one!
Hi mate, as far as I know, the TTS one does have the tender pickups, which makes it a much better option!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Nice model Sam! and that for a railroad model!
Thanks Marco - yes she's a lovely model actually!! :D

Review the railroad Flying Scotsman set
Hi Sam! I totally agree with you. I am new to the hobby. Where do you look for the Hornby RRP on their website? Could you please give me the link?
Hi Kamil - you can just search for the product - their website shows the price on the various product pages!
