This abridged performance of "Pirates", given by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, aired on the US television programme "Omnibus". The company was on tour in the US at the time. The narrator is Alistair Cooke, familiar to many Britons as the presenter of BBC Radio's "Letter from America" for over half a century. The performers are: Major-General Stanley: Peter Pratt Pirate King: Donald Adams Samuel: Trevor Hills or George Cook Frederic: Neville Griffiths Sergeant of Police: Fisher Morgan Mabel: Muriel Harding Edith : Joyce Wright Kate: Joy Mornay Ruth: Ann Drummond-Grant Conductor: Isidore Godfrey
After so many years of listening to Isidore Godfrey, it's fascinating to watch him in action and get a better idea of his conducting style. Of course, he and Ruth were husband and wife, as were the Pirate King and Mabel.
I don't think that's Sandford as the Sergeant, it doesn't sound or look too much like him. Sandford wasn't that fat, but he did sometimes dress heavily to appear such, like Pooh-Bah in the Mikado. But it's hard to tell in these old videos sometimes. That's definitely Donald Adams as the Pirate King though, and I think you're also correct about Peter Pratt as Major General Stanley.
The sergeant is played by Fisher Morgan. He was the D'Oyly Carte company's principal bass-baritone (the player of the "Pooh-Bah" roles) at this point. He left the company in April 1956, shortly after this tour concluded, and died in 1959. He's also heard in some of the company's 1950s records, including as Hildebrand in "Princess Ida". Kenneth Sandford, I believe, joined the company a year after Morgan left, effectively taking over his roles.
@@DukeofDarkCorners Didn't know Fisher Morgan had died so early. A shame. I had been hoping to see Ken Sandford, but this was roughly two years before he joined. I believe at this time he was understudying the lead in the West End production of "Kismet".

I loved watching this! It's Peter Pratt and Donald Adams? And Kenneth Sandford as the Sergeant?
