    Finland is the most important country of the metal music scene in my opinion. I would like it to be like that in my country. Greetings from Colombia/Medellin. I love Finland

      Growing up in the US, there's a decent number of metalheads, but holy fuck, you go to eastern Europe, especially Finland, and then you guys in South America, you go hard! I want to go to big metal shows in Finland and Poland (that's another huge metal scene).

    The reason Metal is so big--or was--in Finland is because the Finns are so buttoned up and introverted, yet have fierce inner passions that need to come out some how. Metal provides a way for them to express these passions in an acceptable way.

    Finland definetaly is the promised land of Metal indeed, it is a dream to be there and even touring there, we're just an underground brazilian Funeral Doom Metal band, sometimes we feel like we are just in the wrong place to be a Funeral Doom band, it's really hard to get recognized here, our journey of 15 years so far, we have a lot of fans in Europe, but it's really hard to get going mainly as a Doom Metal band in Brazil, so Finland really looks like a paradise for us.

    I spent my Erasmus exchange in Helsinki 11 years ago and I felt so much as home there. So many evenings in Tavastia! I loved to walk down the street and listen to rock and metal music played in bars and restaurants. I could wear whatever I wanted and nobody looked at me weirdly. I miss Helsinki so much!

    Kind of tragically, this documentary is a piece of an art stuck on it's own time. I really don't know when this doc was made, but since then so much has changed. Finnish Metal Expo hasnt existed (to my knowledge) for nearly ten years and nearly all the metal bars in Helsinki and within other major cities have dissappeared. Those shown on this documentary ceased to exist many years ago. Metal hasn't disappeared, but it has evolved. It has once again become music of small audiences, but the most important change has been that by winning the Eurovision Lordi made metal music accessible for those who where young adults back in early 2000. Metal is ok, even if it ain't primetime music anymore. Those celebrating the victory of Lordi are now on their prime age, have their families and are pro-metal, even though current music scene of *their* children is towards modern hiphop. The cycle continues and children find their own music outside their parents comfort zone.
    By the 2010s metal-genre divided and evolved - 50% of bands took the "Swedish" way and went mainstream -- I would even call this "ABBA-metal". The other 50% seemed to continue carrying the flag of melancholic nordic minority: music telling stories of lost hope and beauty within darkness. In my eyes the future of Finnish metal has never been better. Even though the commercial golden age probably passed with Nightwish and HIM, quite a few bands continue to evolve the music -- Moonsorrow and Insomnium to mention few... it will be interesting to see where we will be in the next 20 years!
    Edit: mmkay... the year was 2008. Sooo much has changed in only ten years. Nuts!

      Ten years was once an eternity in popular music. The last twenty years have stood still. It's becoming increasingly difficult to come up with something new. But geniuses are born from time to time.

    Finland's only like the 3rd most important country to metal in Scandinavia. Sweden and Norway botg have way more metal bands, plus their own genres (Sweden-Melodic Death Metal/Norway-Black Metal) what genre has Finland invented? Not to diss Finland, this is just directed towards people saying Finland is the most important country for Metal

  • @Verexlyon
    @Verexlyon 2 года назад +2

    Mixture of heavy metal with church is a desecration of heavy metal. Heavy metal means freedom and church means slavery (worshipers call themselves "flock" or "god's alaves"). So, metal church (not the band, of course) it's just oxymoron in all senses.

    • @turpasauna
      @turpasauna 4 месяца назад

      Church in Finland has a long history of pulling s*it like this. :D When Finns did not give up our sacred sites, the church built on top of them. When we still kept alive our witch craft + summoner traditions, the church insisted our most powerful spirit being is the same as the devil in the bible. Nowadays, the same church panders to each leftist idea, in order to keep its members (not working very well).

    Crime from metal music is so rare but everyone makes a huge deal out of it
    When most crime is from mainstream sheep and everyone, like sheep are, shrug it off
    And why show only the overrated bands, other than norther and very briefly moonsorrow? Such as HIM, who aren't even metal.

    Finland, the land of cheesy metal, mostly. A handful of good bands, the rest is as soft as pop or just devoid of originality. Check out Ghost Brigade, Moonsorrow and Shade Empire, forget the other bands.

      Agreed that Sweden is the weakest by far of the Scandinavian countries, they always rip off others. However, black metal sucks which is why Finland having a good black metal scene is like saying Zambia is really good in corruption, the best there is.
      The only BM I can respect and which isn't just childish posing and dilettante tunes are Enslaved, one album from Satyricon, Melechesh which isn't real BM. None of those are Finish bands.

    • @heavymetalrybakina
      @heavymetalrybakina 9 лет назад

      I grew up in the 80s, that's the metal that formed me. Later on, image bullshit and hipsterism started sneaking into metal in a big way. How you dress and how shit your albums sound is more important than the music. Black metal is vastly overrated and more focused on churches, appearance and other bullshit than music.

    • @heavymetalrybakina
      @heavymetalrybakina 9 лет назад

      *****
      I have failed to find these gems. Low-fi bullshit makes me know upfront that I am dealing with children and attention-seeking assholes rather than serious musicians. The fact that any music these days with Popeye vocals is considered BM also tells me that this "genre" isn't defined musically but image-wise and lyrically. It's infantile. This whole punk-like rejection of good musicianship and good production is as hipstery as it gets.

    • @heavymetalrybakina
      @heavymetalrybakina 9 лет назад

      *****
      Venom and Bathory tried to make good music, they didn't try to make shit music to be cool. They also tried to have good productions but back then that was very difficult and expensive. Then came the new wave of idiot BM bands who made shit productions ON PURPOSE. What is more hipster than that? Hipster are infamous for not giving a shit about music but obsess over social issues, politics, religion and other bullshit not music-related.
      Besides, the bands you listed were minor in terms of popularity in the metal scene. Thrash is what the 80s were about, THAT was the revolution. Venom had a brief period of fame, and realistically wrote one good album and a bunch of crap, Quorthon plain sucks, his albums literally serve as amusement like Spinal Tap, and CF were solid and pioneering but song-writing-wise quite dull. And notice that CF had an excellent sound, especially for that period. Your BM heroes focused much more on that shitty, adolescent Hellhammer horseshit which is Spinal Tap of BM.
