    Make sure when inserting chain in the rear derailleur it is placed before the cage stop and not behind it. It the video the chain was inserted incorrectly and that will cause rubbing against the aluminum.

    That video inadvertently drove me crazy :) Just so it might help someone that runs into the same problem: In this (2016) video the cranks used are as in the description stated Shimano HollowTech II cranks with a BCD of 104mm for the single chainring. Those XT cranks (FC-M785) look almost identically to newer XT cranks (M8000) which have a BCD of 96mm (thanks shimano) so that RaceFace would not fit. There's nothing wrong in the video. its awesome and totally applies still in 2018, just wanted to save someone the trouble of ordering a wrong BCD chainring.

  • @BlindstuffMTB

    It was pointed out to me I made a mistake around 8:20, the chain should go above the tab when going back into the derailleur cage, instead of below it as seen in the video.
    Correct: twentynineinches.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/fuji-slm-6-12-004.jpg
    Incorrect: i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo30/flafonta/Shimano3.jpg
    As Narfelchen pointed out, take into account that newer HollowTech cranks may have a different BCD pattern. The XT cranks (FC-M785) show in this video are BCD104, the newer XT cranks (M8000) are BCD96.

    Ok,hardtail front 34t-24t slx crankset,11t-42t slx cassette(11speed),Xt mech.
    So basically i would leave the 34t on it and remove the 24t.
    I wonder about spacers if they are needed?Simply to shift it to be near the frame so is less chain horizontal stretching.Sry for bad english...

      jdssurf good question. In my case I had a 10 speed setup already and was happy with the range it provided so I didn't change anything beyond the front ring. If you have, say an 8sp cassette, then in order to go 1x you should get a new cassette, since your buying, it's probably worth going 11sp cassette.

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  7 лет назад

      Hey Robert, The 16 trance 3 is a great bike! Don't be put down by the components you're running, those are both great.
      I think the single most important thing you can do is set them up properly, that will change them from kinda ok to feeling great. Take your time to play with the sag settings until you find a happy spot for yourself, for me its just around 30% to make the bike feel plushy, I basically like to go as plushy as possible that doesn't pedal bob or bottom out.
      Once you have that, rebound is a key settings, it'll make the bike feel jumpy and unstable if its too fast, or sluggish and packing if its too slow.
      Have you tried tinkering with those settings? I'm 99% sure you can get the bike to where you want without changing any parts.

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Victor, thanks! Tampa has some awesome riding near by, the ABC parks are intense.
      You have to figure out what gear range you want first of all. Take a look at what gear you use the most in the front and if you only use one of them. That should be a good staring point as to what to aim for, I'd say a 32T front sounds about right. Regarding what you need to buy, you have to think how much of a conversion you want to do and what your budget it, you could take the opportunity to switch to 10 speeds, or maybe get an extended range 9 speed cassette (Sunrace makes a 11-40 which seems like a good option and more cost efficient than a 10 speed swap).
      I'm very happy with the 36T front and a 11-36 10 speed rear, works well everywhere, but it takes a lot of power to move the bike on the steeper climbs, I switch out to a 32T when I travel north. They key thing is that you find a speed range that would work for you.

    What do you do to prevent the chain from dropping?

    • @BlindstuffMTB

      Derraileur with clutch and narrow wide chain ring.

    could u go 1x12 with a XT shifter?

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  5 лет назад

      You'd have to buy the 12sp XT derraileur and shifter. It's all new for them so I don't know the exact details

      Maybe i'll just stick with a 11 gear cassett but switch up to 46 ? should do the trick also i guess

      @@clearlightcrystal this is definitely personal opinions, but what you're saying is more than enough, there have been very few situations where I've felt the need for a 12th speed. Having ridden both, I'm sticking to a wide range 11sp, cheaper, good enough and less chance of crushing the derailleur

    Bro What is the size of your crank??

  • @iamgroot6439
    @iamgroot6439 7 лет назад +3

    you can actually remove those types of chain by using long nose pliers

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  7 лет назад

      You're absolutely correct, some people do find it easier to do like that.

    Dont you need to cut the chain?? Coz you change to 2x to 1x.

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  5 лет назад

      Depends on the ratio of the front to rear sprockets. In my case the length was fine as is, but you _may_ need to change it

    Hello guys, just a quick question. I have 2015 Giant trance 3, and it has 2x10 drivetrain. I'm wondering if its compatible for an upgrade of 1x11 without having to change the free hub body on the back?
    Thank you guys and have a wonderful day.

    why the hell didn’t I watch this video three days ago. Just spent $500 in the GX Eagle 😞

      It's all good! The GX eagle is amazing. The added range in the gears is nice to have if you live in a place with steep stuff

    well done ...for ruining a perfectly good set up , previous owner done this to my bike, i would convert it back but i don't want to throw money at it . My first clunker had single speed,750mm wide bars 29''wheels because there were no mountain bikes , i wonder if we will go full circle and go back to those waffling about how you can ''really connect'' to the bike . I may start wearing jumbo cords again too, 1x isn't an upgade it's a compromise
