    Beautiful balcony garden! You had so many success and wonderful harvests. If you are open to it, here are a couple of observations that might help you next year.
    The peas, beets, spinach, and radishes may have been planted a bit late. They prefer cooler temperatures. Living in DC, I usually planted mine in mid March. You might also have good luck with spring brassicas. There's some very cute, quick growing miniature cabbages available.
    As you realized cucumbers and beans don't like too much rain. They may also need more sun. I usually wait until the beginning of June to plant them outside. You have a pretty large area of vertical space behind the peppers. You could probably grow climbing beans up a trellis behind the peppers. Beans like a smilar amount of sun as peppers.
    Your strawberries were quite successful. They don't usually produce many, if any berries the first year. You got a good harvest for the first year.
    You might also want to check out Renee's Garden seeds. They have a number of varieties specifically for growing in containers. I've had good luck growing their little prince eggplant and astia zucchini in 18 inch pots. I've also been wanting to try the pixie cabbage because I could grow them in the spring (April - May) then plant a summer, heat loving plant after resulting in two harvests in the same space. www.reneesgarden.com/blogs/gardening-resources/container-varieties
    Looking forward to seeing your 2024 garden.

      Thank you so much for all the tips!! I actually had the same idea to put a trellis behind the peppers for peas or cucumber, but I never got to use the trellis because those plants didn’t make it ☹️ I’ll look into the miniature cabbages and will definitely check out Renee’s Garden seeds! I’m going to PIN 📌 your comment so I can easily find it later on and so others can read your recommendations! Thanks again 🫶🏻🙏🏻❤️

    Your garden was fantastic! A balcony garden isn't easy, you did great! Don't be to hard on yourself, you created quite a bounty of fresh herbs and vegetables, it's ok that some vegetables were not successful. Your succeeded in more than ways . Your food looked fresh and delicious, I especially want to try the red pepper dip and foccacia. I love your stories . Thank you for returning and continuing to share.❤

    Your harvest is actually impressive I know we always have a plan but sometimes it doesn’t go as we planned 😂that’s the beauty of it. Be grateful for what you got in hopes for more next season. My garden is Similar to yours in size. I had a lot of things die too but I’m happy I have lost of basil, mint, coriander parsley and some Swiss chard (that thing is impossible to kill🤣😂.) going. I sewed 3 trays of seeds with 9 cubes and not of it germinated as they were eaten by ants. It’s about to be rainy season so they are hunting for keeps. The weather has also gotten pretty dry and very hot so my pots turn to dry out quickly but I’m not in dismay I’m using this time to feed my worms to make compost and rejuvenate my soil for the next month or two. So don’t lose hope🥰😍.

    Great video Renee.
    I didnt see a negative in the failures. Even gardners in the soil have those. As someone pointed out, maybe try groing some small space varieties. I also solely grow in a containers on my balcony. I even grow sunflowers and some indeterminate tomatoes too and trellising beans. And they do fabulous. I would suggest getting or making a bamboo trellis to help your plants trellus up. Plants are so resilient and want to produce. Its about counting what went well, but also what can i work on even more for next year and having fun. Many people dont even get a mini carrot. And you did. There are also dwarf varieties of many fruit trees. I myself grow blackberriea, yellow and red raspberries, gooseberries, straberries and apples on my balcony. Its so rewarding to harvest them. Two yo three trays of berries feom containers is such a reqarding feeling.
    Sorry about my rambling. But know you did wonderful. Greetings.

    Good morning. We gardeners can get a bit discouraged when we don't get the results we hoped for especially if it's for reasons out of our control like the weather. I am totally impressed with your harvest and mostly how you used all of it and not waste any of this bounty. I had disapppointing results in my potager last summer but also had some successes just like you. Let's try again this spring and share our stories if you wish.

    • @slowlifestories
      @slowlifestories  Год назад +1

      It's comforting to know others share similar experiences, and I’m happy to hear that you had some successes despite the disappointments… 🙏🏻 sometimes it’s difficult to not get discouraged but at the same time, the failures make me try again until it works out!! I’ll definitely keep sharing my gardening journey 👩🏻‍🌾❤️❤️

    Such a lovely video! For seed starting, you might want to kake a couple changes - use a seed starting mix (instead of soil and compost), use a heating pad, and use a larger cup for the timatoes and peppers. The seed starting nix is helpful because its sterile and some seeds will die from mold in the soil. Overall it looks like a lovely and successful garden!

    • @slowlifestories
      @slowlifestories  Год назад

      Thank you so much for the tips! Will definitely do this next time!! I was never sure if I needed a heating pad, but I think I will get one! ☺️☺️❤️

    Hi Sis,
    My family escaped communism in the 1960s (Dominican Republic) after my father was assassinated by Trujillo (our version of Castro). We moved to NYC and lived on the West side. I eventually became a RN and currently work in Home Care in New jersey. Gardening is my passion...
    I hope I can help with some gardening advice.( of course the internet is limitless with info.)
    1) You will get bigger veggies if you use bigger pots.2) Different veggies have different fertilizer needs (ex: root crops like high phosphorus, leafy greens like high nitrogen). 3) Some veggies like cool weather, others like the heat.4) And if you seriously fall in love with gardening, keep a journal of what varieties you grew and how and the results. I'm looking forward to seeing this year's garden and wish you much success!
    ❤🌻

    • @slowlifestories
      @slowlifestories  9 месяцев назад

      I am so sorry about your father, communism is a cancer, and it always produces the same results: oppression, suffering and death! 😔 Thanks so much for the gardening advice… using bigger pots for bigger veggies makes total sense, I’m limited by space but will definitely keep it in mind! I’ll have to pay attention to the fertilizing needs.. do you recommend I fertilize seedlings? I’m reading different things, some say to fertilize once they have the second set of true leaves, and others say don’t fertilize until after transplanting… not sure what to do 🫠 keeping a journal is a great idea! I’m going to do it this year… I’ve kind of done it in my head but there’s no way I can remember all details so I better write it down.. thanks so much for all the tips!! 🙏🏻❤️❤️

    It was fun to see the process of your harvests and what you did with it (the recipes and such). I am sorry that you didn't have the best of harvests due to the rain (there really was so much rain this year in the northeast - I am in N. NJ). When I had my vegetable garden, I had similar issues with pests and some of my harvests. It is still so much fun to do your best to care for your garden over time. Loved your video.

    Would just like to know how much sunlight you get on your balcony. I have a large covered patio probably notth facing. Does get a certain amt of sun eniugh for flowers, just not sure what i could do for veggies. Love how pleasing and productive yours looks.

    • @slowlifestories

      Thank you 🙏🏻 My balcony is east facing, I would say it gets moderate sun because it’s kind of a box and there’s another building in front… half of it is almost always in the shade so I had to be strategic about the placement of veggies that required more vs less sunlight… I would suggest to look up veggies that can tolerate shade, maybe try some root vegetables or leafy greens 🥬 😊

    Hi, I love your videos! They’re so soothing, and they give me hope for my own balcony garden! I was wondering, does that tiered terracotta/clay planter that you have your basil (amongst other things I can’t currently remember) in have a specific name, kind of like the olla waterers, or do you remember where you got it? I’ve been wanting one, but the only ones I can seem to find are very small. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your videos; they’re a great inspiration!
