I thought the music added a nice Zen touch to your video. It was quiet & meditative... it put me in the zone! :) Keeping an eye out for the next update on this nice little Chinese Privet. Thanks for sharing! Love your videos!
I agree with everyone. The background music gave the video a nice feel, but was maybe a BIT loud. So if you decide to add ambient music to more videos (even ones without loud neighbors) I'm here for it, just maybe a touch quieter! =] Excited to see this privet's journey!
love the sinuous movement exposed by your pruning. it will be fun to watch you work your magic with this one, Nigel! thanks for another great teaching moment….
Excellent video Nigel. So informative. Love the added music. I pruned my first tree, 6 months ago, a 15 year old bougainvillea bush I have enjoyed -until the spikes got me too many times. Watching all your videos for guidance. You give good reasoning behind your moves. I like your style. similar to mine. I came to this art at age 69. I watch youtube videos. Always see your new ones. I'm working backwards through your library. lots of enjoyment when see my trees. But why are so few women creating trees? Thank you for my early education. I am in Atlanta and enjoyed seeing the Toronto Bonsai Fest. I have family there. Cheers Nigel!
Thanks Jo, we have a woman president of the Toronto club! My channel has about 18 percent female viewers. It seems to be about the same numbers for club members.
Nigel is just amazing making the hobby simpler but never loose the beauty, a sketch so nice and clear. Keep posting, loved the practicality of your Bonsai skills, keep teaching okay.
your videos are amazing lessons even though I understand little English I put it in the translator and I understand a big hug here from Rio Grande do Sul it's cold here in cusco ranguia.
Really like the soft flow of the trunk, shame it's so scared from the nurseries shaping process, still has lots of potential, it will look great in the future, Thanks for showing it!!!
I like Nigel's commentary, and I like the space music. But I think I'd rather have Nigel accompanied with bird-calls, leaf-blowers, and the occasional zombie apocalypse..
I just collected a common privet from my local park a month or so ago. (it's already taken over the area, I know it's insanely invasive) So it's cool seeing how it's Chinese cousin can be developed!
Agreed. The music was really distracting. To be honest, I would much prefer neighborhood background noise, even if it was kinda loud. Real-life sounds are ok! We’re all just chillin in the bonsai zone (aka Nigel’s back yard)
@@mirandusings the problem is not necessarily the volume of the neighbours music, but the fact it can result in a copyright strike against the channel.
For those with an issue with the background music - it’s not always possible to control environmental factors, such as a noisy neighbour, or unexpected background music. This can cause copyright issues and ultimately, at worst, result in a channel being taken down by RUclips. A little ambient music to drown out the otherwise distracting or problematic noise is a small price to pay, otherwise you would likely not see this video at all.
A tree with such a beautiful character! ❤I always learn something from you, this bonsai tree has a very good future, believe me, because it is under your maintenance. And a request, the tamarind bonsai landscape that I started 6 years ago, you will remember, has become much more mature now. Please take a look at its current update(12 May 2022) and leave some valuable criticism for me.
Why keep the horizontal branch to then remove it at a later point? What is the purpose, will it not just steal growth from other areas and delay its own replacement?
If your privet acts like the privets I grew up around (Amur River privet), you should get lots of back budding, and lots of new branches to select from. There is a church near me with an Amur River privet that has been kept to about thirty inches tall for over sixty years that I know of and could easily be a hundred years old, When hedges grew too high or out of control, people would cut them all the way back to the roots and, within month or so, lots of new branches would shoot up. Obviously, you wouldn't do that with your tree since you would want to work from that really elegant trunk line.
hey nigel , very informative and fun video , the background was nice too . So , after doing a hard prune , do u apply anything on the cut or leave it open ?
Always wandered- how do those trees recover after all that pruning and barerooting, but recently i rootpruned and brunchprooned my jujube and... Actually it feels better than the one that grows in my garden in the soil. Magic of bonsai? Or they actually feel our love towards them?
@@TheBonsaiZone Fifty years ago I was working at a local feed & seed company. Our store manager was 89 years old and had been in the business since the thirties. Every spring we had a nursery in the back. We would order in hundreds of bare-root fruit and ornamental trees for resale. The first thing the manager would do, as we unpacked them, was to cut all the roots on each tree back to about nine inches long. He had learned that from an even older mentor who had learned to do it back in Germany. The benefit was that the roots would begin branching out as soon as the trees were planted and broke dormancy. It must have worked, because he had a lot of farmers who came back every year when they expanded their orchards. From him, I learned that root pruning during dormancy actually helps a transplanted tree catch hold and grow much faster. Also the farmers didn't have to twist the trees' roots around each other to make them fit in the holes.
Hey Nigel, Absolutely love the content. The Music is a nice additive but you need to bring the overall level down or have it side-chained to your vocal so it dips in and out. Quick fix would just bring the music down a few decibels. Thank you for everything you do. Love from South Africa
It depends on what kind of a tree it is! For a hardy tree it might be too late, for a tropical, it's a good time. You can pull the tree out of the pot and check if the root tips are active. You will see white root tips growing if the roots are active, this generally means it's too late. If the roots look dormant, it's safe to re pot!
So far, I haven't seen any problems with the tree, I think both have similar over wintering requirements. We'll have to wait and see what the future has in store!
These bonsai keepers have something i don't. Willing to cut the branch off without worrying about cutting too much. If i had a small tree i would just let it grow infinitely but it obviously wouldn't look as beautiful as it could. That's why I watch these videos hoping i would be able to learn how the think.
I think I am psychologically scarred concerning privet. As a child our council/municipal house had privet hedges - it was commonly used. Unfortunately my dad used us as free labour whenever he trimmed them which I hated. That intense feeling towards this plant has carried over into adult life. Perhaps I need counselling. 😄
The music was added to drown out the neighbors music in the background. This avoids copyright strikes against the channel.

no , but the music did seem very effective , if possible try adding more for other videos , it makes feels calm just like the trees ...
Welcome to therapy with Nigel. So peaceful. Love the tree. Marvelous trunk!
great work Nigel, I think this kind of pruning is the most satisfying bonsai work!
Enjoyed seeing your work on this tree. Cascade, semi-cascade and windswept seem to be my favorite styles.
I hope it bounces back well, I'm looking forward to more work this summer!!
Love the lines of this tree Nigel. Great work!

The Privet is doing well this summer!!
What a beautiful trunk, the twist in it is so interesting. Thanks for sharing the process of this privet with us 😊
Nice little Privet Nigel . When you covered half the pot it really changed the look. I like how you can see into the future.
I didn’t even notice the music had to go back and see what the issue was. Loved the video and seeing the progress on the tree!
Thanks Margaret, I have gotten so many comments about the music.
Nice to see the privet doing so well. Can’t believe it’s been a month! 👍
Yes, time seems to just "fly" by "Blue Jay Bonsai"!!!!

I really didn't notice the music, but I miss the rooster serenades.

I was wondering why the pot was so big ... thanks for the explanation 👍 🙂
My pleasure 😊
Beautiful structure and form created. And…now I know what you mean by “a hard prune.”😊
Thank you J!
The background music makes it difficult for me to focus on what you're saying. (Mind you, this might be because I'm becoming an old biddy...!)

maybe totally mute the background and do voice over. more work for you, but probably a better product. I also found the music too distracting.

Nigel is there anyway of reducing the leaf size? And how do you get the leaves so green, mine are pale green and often fade to yellow.

Root pruning and top pruning can actually be beneficial to the plants long term!
@@TheBonsaiZone but the thing is- they literally bursted in growth within a week. Both roots and twigs. Like a fireworks.
