    These trains also are in service as "regionale veloce" trains (the middle tier between regional and intercity), and they're used on longer distances (like Rome-Pisa alongside the Thyrrenic Sea coast, or classic non high speed services to Florence and Naples).

    I travelled once on this regional service between Civitavecchia and Rome Ostiense (another time I had to catch a night train from there too). It is a convenient service, although the fastest ones are now the intercity or Frecciargento services.
    Yet it will be interesting for you to know that, before Covid, there used to be a direct non-stop train between Civitavecchia and Rome (San Pietro station) reserved to cruise passengers on excursions to the Vatican. On that service they often operated the now retired ETR 450 Pendolino

    Hamburg Hbf actually had more passengers in 2019: ~537000 daily, which is ~196M per year 😅
    Frankfurt also has ~180M per year.
    Although these numbers include visitors...

    • @C1710
      @C1710 2 года назад +1

      The website that's cited in Wikipedia (in an archived version from 2019) says "frequented by approximately 480,000 persons per day", so I assume it also includes visitors, i.e. it has less visitors/travelers than both Hamburg and Frankfurt 😅
      They haven't changed the number since at least 2010 though and assuming that the introduction of the Frecciarossa increased the number of passengers, these figures might not be accurate anymore.

    This is quite interesting. I didn't know that 32 platforms was considered a 'mega station'. I also found it interesting that roma termini only services 180 million passengers per year. How do Italians, at least in Rome, normal get around on a daily basis? By comparison, something I find very interesting, in Sydney Australia, where I used to live, they have 26 platforms, and 400 million train passengers annually, at Sydney Central Station, the main station for the city. Only Southern Cross station in Melbourne has a higher annual passenger count, if you include all public transport options and not just trains. I'd always considered our rail passenger numbers, and networks, tiny compared to European cities.

    • @arokh72
      @arokh72 2 года назад +4

      @@NonstopEurotrip I think I know where I made the error. It's quite possible, and indeed likely, that I mixed up Central Station numbers with network wide numbers, and Sydney's network is quite extensive, as you are probably aware. The official government sites, who run the trains here still, always tend to quote "over 1 million passengers per day", hence my confusion. So 180 passengers annually through a single station, for a city with a population of 2.9 million (2017) is quite impressive.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 2 года назад

      @@arokh72 Don’t forget that Sydney Central has just 21 operational platforms. That means Termini is over 50% larger. Also, Tome has other regional train stations in the city that service other suburban lines, while all suburban service in Sydney except one end in Central.
