It's a shame most people don't understand the real meaning of this song it's not a rah rah patriotic song n as a Vietnam Veteran I appreciate this song n truly understand n appreciate it
He did not dodge the draft. He got his notice and reported, but was turned away due to injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident months earlier. Plenty of other famous musicians actually DID dodge the draft.
Used to really like the paired down version of this where it became more of a mournful protest about the challenges and problems faced by homecoming vets, and less likely to be mistaken for the flag waving anthem some mistook it for.
