    -- Summary --
It’s possible to think positively if you KILL YOUR ANTS!
We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with fear and bad news that triggers our automatic negative thinking-ANTS! Need proof? Just turn on the TV or cruise through the net. Doom and gloom stories dominate the headlines-because fear makes us pay attention.
In fact, our brains are wired to focus on the negative in order to avoid things that might hurt us. Fear definitely serves a purpose, but what happens when all we seem to focus on are negative thoughts? Bad things. Take a look at these compelling facts:
Every thought you have releases chemicals in the brain.
Hopeful thoughts release chemicals that help you feel happy and calm.
Negative thoughts release chemicals that make you feel stressed and sad.
If what you bring your attention to determines how you feel and act, focusing too much on negative thoughts can lead to destructive behaviors-behaviors that can ruin your important relationships and ruin your mind.
Enough of the bad news. There is good news!
You can learn how to kill your automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) and focus on the positive.
    Here’s how…
In this short video, Dr. Daniel Amen and his wife, health and wellness expert Tana Amen, discuss how to challenge and kill your own ANTs in three easy steps.
3 steps to kill those ANTs
Write it down. When those automatic negative thoughts start tumbling around in your mind, write them down to clearly identify them.
Investigate. Ask yourself, are these thoughts even true? Uninvestigated thoughts can lead us to act in harmful ways.
Talk back. If you discover that these negative thoughts are false, talk back to them! Tell these thoughts you know they aren’t true!
Practice these steps each time you feel automatic thoughts entering your brain. By labeling, investigating, and then talking back to your automatic negative thoughts, you’ll turn your mind into "an ANT ghost town."

I've found this video 6 years after it was posted and I highly doubt that anyone unsubscribed because of Tana's story. We adopted through foster care and I have, at times, thought the same kind of thoughts about one of my children being just like their bio mom. So I appreciated Tana's story. I'm not alone. But it is not good to let that thought go unchallenged.

There's actually a saying in the news industry. "If it bleeds, it leads." They know people will watch horrible things, and the worse the better, so that's what we get all the time. I don't watch the news anymore. If it's really important, I'll hear about it somewhere eventually.

So, how do I make my mother stop doing that? I am fearful that I'm already dealing with her brain already being affected due to multiple contusions in her youth, work in a toxic environment, trans-ischemic attacks. She's 66 y.o. but she's draining me out and transferring all the negativity to me. She's enjoying talking negatively and she feels like it's my duty as a daughter to listen to her. Ugh! Do you have meds for me to sleep or for her to be quiet??? :)

Both Tana and dr.Amen had great things to share. I learned a lot from both equally, so am happy that both had a chance to share their experiences. Though, I do think the dynamic of the conversation and the jumping around was a bit distracting. So, to gain the most out of the video I had to focus on each individual's points. I think it would have been easier and more beneficial if there were two seperate videos. One of dr.Amen and one of Tana.

How am I supposed to right down my negotiate thoughts. What if your ants are hily complex and would take a long time to figure out? What if you have ants like a laier kake once you brake down one layer there's another below it and once you brake that down there's a nother later.🤔 And what if you can't really proove if your thoughts are correct or not?

  • @Bob-v3g4m

0:40 As a society, we are so neglectful of one another's basic needs. All the money spent on medical care, no prisons, etc, we should be spending that on children to ensure they all get a good start in life. The needs of the body should be met daily, as should care of the mind. I'm not talking any form of conditioning, such as we had when I grew up with religion and fear enforced up us to make us "behave". Conditioning doesn't work, just look at religions, at China, Russia, etc, they are not healthy people. It's about helping each other understand. Only when we understand can we be mature.

I have had negative thoughts swirling around in my head. Alzheimers has been going through my family, and I have been wearing that I might get it too. I know I need to distract my mind with better thoughts and focus on living life now. I need to be in the present moment. You are extraordinary together. I learn a lot from your interruptions because you're pointing important things that make your husband's explanation more understandable to those who do not work in psychiatry. Thank you both for everything you do for us.
Indeed, not all the thoughts that go through our heads are true.
They depend on the experiences we have experienced (from childhood to the present), the education we have had, the physical and mental health we were at the time of the incident, etc.
But what do we do when, after answering the question in writing, the answer is: "It's true what you think and feel?"

Dr Amen and Tana start with the reminder that stress is at the cause of many if not all health problems. My network completely agrees and this program offers specific action on how to address automatic negative thinking or ANTs that can drive us into depression, anxiety and more. It is wonderful to hear them address the chemical reactions. Thank you.

I'm just now following you on You Tube!! I watched a couple programs on PBS that you two put out. It's amazing information. I was already on the road to bettering my food choices so getting Tana's recipes has been awesome and delicious!!!
This video is so helpful! I have ALWAYS been a pessimist and lately I've noticed my 10 year old daughter, (who's always been positive) is now seeing the "cup half empty"😱
I am going to put this into practice! Thank you both!!!

Loved that! Can't stop listening to you guys...I learn so much. And the practical examples of difficult moments with your own child are something we can all so identify with. Wonderful and comforting too!

I thought this was unrealistic. I agree there are ants. But your premise supposes that 'uninvestigated thoughts' , after you write them down, have no merit. Ok, that's probably true. But your video assumes that all of those thoughts are untrue or have no merit. What if you write down and investigate and find out the 'ants' are not imaginary. Unfortunately your video is misleading. The truth is, yes, thoughts and emotions and thoughts can indeed run wild. The reality you dismiss is that sometimes your thoughts and emotions are reacting to fact/data that is not imaginary. You should either drop this video completely or remake one that is balanced.

He said, "Whenever you feel sad, mad, nervous or out of control we want you to write that down what you're thinking."
"...So for example, I might think to myself Tana never listens to me. And so left uninvestigated, that's a very toxic thought."
This means you investigate the thought. Leaving them uninvestigated is toxic. Tana goes on to point out that whether the thoughts are true or untrue our brain's habit is to then go on to look for evidence to support that thought - it's helpful to know this if we want to know what's true, to investigate with an awareness that the investigator has biases. So what is true? I think that's a separate topic. But if someone is coming at you with an axe, and you think, "He looks like he is going to attack me," don't bother writing this down for investigation. Run. Investigate later - maybe the axe guy was aiming for the bear behind you.
Anyway, in the spirit of investigation, I wanted to let you know that I did not hear them say or imply that uninvestigated thoughts have no merit. In fact, Tana gained much insight into herself from investigating her thought "you are like your dad" toward her child. It was the investigation itself that led to a breakthrough in self-awareness that made possible a shift in the dynamic with her child. The thought provided the opportunity, and the investigation created the merit.

You are wrong. He never said dismiss the thoughts. He said investigate them and he right. So many times have certain thoughts and never really look into them. If you have a thought it certainly has merit but it does not mean that the thought is correct. They gave numerous examples of this.
