    I’ve been obsessed with picking my skin since I was 13. I’m now almost 20 and I’ve still yet to fully break out of the compulsions. I’ve had some really horrible times with it. I’ve grown to recognize the thoughts of when I’m about to do it, where it is most likely to happen, and things to make it less severe. I can almost sometimes recognize that I’m doing it in the moment. The trouble is breaking out of it while in the act! I can’t physically stop myself. I had another bad day today… I began researching it again for what feels like the 10 time alone this year. I found an article that actually linked it to OCD. I’ve only watched maybe two of your videos but already I’ve identified with many of the things you have said and I’m going to start to try and work in some of the things into my routine! Things like not running from the thoughts but embracing them. Lately it’s felt like nothing can make me better but I know I’ll never give up.

    I’ve had “pure o” for over 30 years. My obsessions are based on realness, things being genuine not just objects but situations, decisions, etc…. I compare everything and mentally try to compare and match things up as to make “it” right. I ponder for hours even days over something I’ve either read, said, done, thought of to get “it” right. I’m on meds, and trying ERP but I’m finding that doing the exposure part where I actively think of my obsessions is just turning into yet another compulsion. It’s a never ending merry go round 😖

    I recently got diagnosed with OCD I was having violent/self harm intrusive thoughts. I was scared 😢 I went to therapy thinking I had anxiety which I know I do because I feel so anxious at times but when I have thoughts like my dpdr will never go away I catch myself googling and searching the internet just to get relief 😭 I have a fear that’ll I’ll develop schizophrenia or have psychosis and be locked away in the mental hospital forever. I spend so much time searching the web just so I can feel like I am not alone😢

    • @backgroundstories4u
      @backgroundstories4u 9 месяцев назад +3

      haha i had that schizophrenia fear too
      my best advice is just repeat everytime you feel anxiety about getting schizophrenia "maybe i will" then just sit with it. accepting that there is a posibility you will develop it and feeling that anxiety hotness around your face everytime it happens will make you feel waay better after
      i'm still in the process and i'm so mad i haven't been exposing myself to my fears way earlier
      also try to watch youtube videos about schizophrenia without doing anything and thinking anything just watch them and hold in the anxiety
      this also is valid for every fear ocd related
      it will be fine🤗

  • @Lordani66
    @Lordani66 9 месяцев назад +9

    I have a question. Is it normal, is it an OCD pattern/symptom, where I have real event OCD (and somewhat false memory OCD as well) and then my obsessions/anxiety get better, but then my brain makes me notice an event in real life, see some patterns, and use them to "create evidence" in my head for my OCD? And basically make the OCD go crazy again. Yeah, basically creating evidence for my obsession being real, giving me anxiety, reason to believe I may be in trouble etc.

    Hi Nathan. I have struggled with severe OCD for quite a few years now but have started to get control of it in recent times. Although immensely challenging, I can attest that change is possible with enough work.
    The reason for this comment is to thank you for your hard work in these videos. They are immensely helpful, particularly this one which is an excellent explanation of why ERP is effective, but also the one about decision making and the maybe, maybe not technique. You have reminded me what I should be doing in order to have the best possible life and I'm very grateful for your work. Although of course there will be challenging times for you in content creation and the online world, never forget how many lives you've helped change. I hope to get to speak to you one day to thank you properly for your contribution to my own life and of so many others too. Wishing you a happy and healthy Christmas. Matt.

    What about ocd about never achieving your dreams? Especially when they seem so far way like getting a wife/girlfriend or certain car which is Nyon impossible in western society nowadays. I have dreams that go in chronological order every night where I live with a girl named Monika and own my dream car. I fear I’ll never achieve anything like those dreams and it cripples me. I cry or get upset almost every day about not being able to achieve those dreams or see that girl irl and no type of therapy has ever helped. Not talk therapy. Not TMS. Not EMDR. I feel like a lost cause despite doing everything right… I really should just give up and die already.

    Nathan the foundation of this RUclips channel seems to be educational but the videos are also providing reassurance which is hurting the very people you're trying to help. In addition you are making money off the reassurance these videos provide while telling people not to seek reassurance. Would love some clarification here as I like you as a clinician, but question your motives now that money is involved and the contradiction seems damaging overall to folks struggling with OCD.
    My assumption is that you are providing "assurance" instead of "reassurance" but i think that would be a pretty thin justification.
    How should people with OCD use OCD educational content properly without indirectly hurting themselves?
    Thanks for any clarification you can provide!

    • @ocdandanxiety
      @ocdandanxiety  9 месяцев назад +6

      Reassurance would be me saying, "Your OCD isn't real" "what your going through will never happen" --- People can use anything as reassurance and if they use my videos as such, they should take a break from watching them.
      The reason I created my channel and courses are to help the individuals in various countries who will likely never find a true OCD specialist who can give them accurate information.
      To your second point, mental health professionals are the one of the few who are seen as "taking advantage" of those with mental health because they charge for something and have to make a living.

    The clip is interesting. Everyone experiences symptoms differently and with different severity. OCD has certain diagnostic criteria that distinguish it from other mental disorders. Some people with OCD understand that their obsessions are mindless and have a hard time managing them by neutralizing them with some kind of action, either mental or a combination of physical actions. It is assumed that a key role is played by the connections of brain synapses with the communication of neurotransmitters in combination with serotonin.

    I'll do an exposure and not wash my hands. But at the end of the day, I still wash my hand's because it tells me I won't sleep. How do I get around this.

    This could just be a me thing but I refuse to call it MY ocd. It is not mine but instead simply something which I am experiencing.
    I have personally experienced that I experience more OCD symptoms when I make it my identity.

    IS anyone knowledgeable about OCD religious scrupulosity or Maladaptive Imagination?

    I really belive that medication won't really help to get rid of OCD, what I actually found helpfull for treating OCD is CBT therapy.
    Follow CBT. Of course its difficult to fight your ocd, but you have to cause that is the way to get better.

    I have cronic ocd and abandonment issues that haunt me everyday. Left at 14 on the streets and never had anyone to look up to.
    Or to talk to about my ocd and depression.
    I'm now 43 and still it haunts me .
    But since I've been listening to your advice it's getting abit better.
    But I can't stop the
    Abandonment issue
    From bringing me down.
    Any advice?
