Oh man, I can totally empathise with this guy - I was there once before trying to figure all of this out with my intellect, only to realise later on that it was my own intellect that had created a bind which was preventing me from "being", from experiencing "what is"...I was so caught up in my head that I over thought everything, I really hope this guy gets into some form of mindfulness practice like yoga, meditation or breathwork to bring him back to his body, he is stuck in his own mind...
Everyone was cringing and laughing at him but he was being completely open and vulnerable. He had courage to speak his mind with no mask and within that he illuminated the truth about this whole process. How we all secretly wish to let go enough in order to awaken. But later you see that there is no beating the ego at its own game, the ego will only ever try to get somewhere because that's all it knows. Allow it to do so. And in the mean time become aware of being, of this.
That's why all self realized beings say for the final step, gurus grace is required. The mind had to disappear without desiring to disappear. This requires grace. Ramana, anamalai, nisgardatta, anandamayi ma,, all day this
I fully understand that happiness doesn’t come from anything external. But where I get hung up is the fact that as a human I still have preferences and it can be hard to not desire certain situations over other ones. For example, me and my girlfriend recently broke up. I can tell myself all day that my happiness doesn’t come from her, but I can’t ignore the fact that I felt much better when she was around. So, I know happiness doesn’t come from other people but I am certainly happier being around some people than I am other people and it’s hard not to yearn for someone when they add so much joy to your life.
From my understanding there is no problem with what you are describing. It’s natural as a human to feel that way. Don’t make any dogmas with such teachings live your life as you want to there is no right or wrong on the „spiritual path“ (atleast for me that was a huge discovery and brought me from my intellect more into the experience and freedom) And maybe the term happiness can be looked at. Just spend time with your sense of beeing it’s not so easy to explain the experience of that which is happiness but not as our language usually use the word. So even in deep grief there is that „ sense“ but at the same time it can be really beneficial to connect with new people or do whatever you need.
Who is starving the ego? This is not a rhetorical question. Is it not the ego? The ego is not our enemy. It is our expression. It is a function. A beautiful function. True: Just live your Life! Experience deeply the joys and sorrows, the successes and failures, the gains and disappointments. Ramana Maharshi advocated: Be as you are. That's exactly what he meant. The only sin ego commits is seeing this tiny part of itself as the entirety of Self ( The Self, Myself) It ignores the vast, unlimited, unconscious, unknowable Being of totality.
The nature of my TRUE self is happiness, when something else comes between me and my feelings, I loose happiness. Then we start looking for it. One would have to know about TRUE self, my identified self, the world I live in and relationship between all three, and only way to know all these and realize it is by studying Upanishads very deeply. Just talks on some one topic can create interest but cannot give answers to all the doubts I come up with. I am telling this after studying Upanishads for more than 25 years under guidance of a teacher.
Thank you! Certainly our happiness depends on desires and at the same time our desires can lead us to suffering. The universe always gives us opportunity to satisfy our desires one or two times because it's necessary for our spiritual growth to liberate us from the demand, dictate of desires. The satisfaction of desire is a trap and path to addiction and suffering, the liberation from desires is a way to spiritual growth and final happiness.

My thinking is so involuntary that it drives me nuts. GRADUAL is the keyword. RUPERT! HOW CAN HE STOP the overthinking? Sometimes, is it not biology? Neurology? If it is, what is the answer to support that? He is patient. He does not want to be happy, he wants to not be unhappy.
Body and heart centered meditations, somatic therapies and practices help a lot. It helps builds the muscle of putting the attention to the body and the senses instead of getting caught up in the mind.
Just let the overthinking take place, you are aware of the overthinking so by definition you are already where you 'have to be'. The moment overthinking kicks in, just keep on overthinking, nothing wrong. The moment it is no longer wrong, it does not have the capacity to steal your attention

Happy or happiness / pain is the by product of your actions. How you will be in permanent Happy/pain. Love implies between two. Conflict also is happening between two. His desire is the real culprit. 😊
It is especially hard for human beings to realize that only when you stop thinking (and perceiving), you can "feel" the self, the timeless. Everything that you feel and think is always bound to time or space, and that is not the self but only a fragment (or partial view) of the self. The first answer was the right answer. Thanks, Rupert.
For those still struggling with free will and the feeling of being a separate self, try a simple experiment for one day: be mindful and observe whether specific outcomes in your life-regardless of whether they are good or bad-result from particular actions you believe you have taken. Reflect on how those outcomes might look different if you had not taken those specific actions. That's interpretation of what Francis suggested on his short about (Non-Duality) -Real need or Lack.
I think there are a couple of things that were not spoken but could be helpful with this. 1. Pleasure (the temporary happiness) is different than happiness / joy / fulfilment (the long lasting happiness). Giving them two different names can help direct one's attention per Rupert's guidance. 2. Satiating the desire for happiness can be understood through other experiences, too. How does one satiate hunger? By eating nutritious food... or by filling the stomach with non-nutritious (that perhaps still contain calories) things! One can satiate the desire for a taste or even the pain of hunger by eating snacks, treats, etc. but that desire is not the same as the need your body has for nutrition. Sometimes we can tell the signals apart via feeling, sometimes we cannot. Regardless, not many people would say that it is a bad thing to seek nutritious food. And if you have mistaken desire / pleasure for flavor for the fulfilment of nourishing your body, you will feel dissatisfied with healthy nutrition compared to junk calories because your radar is pointed at the wrong thing... If you do this for long enough, your body will suffer as a result of giving it only calories and not nutrition. So, going back to the ego... if your ego is active and seeking pleasure (which it thinks is happiness) you may mistake happiness as boring or not enough. The more attention you direct towards the ego and it's desires, the more miscalibrated your radar will be. The more attention you give to the impersonal self, love, and fulfilment, the more happiness you will experience.
An additional note is that the feeling of hunger (and other body based needs) can come with dissatisfaction or satisfaction. It seems to depends on identification as Rupert is saying. If i identify as the separate ego, it may feel as if feeding my body nutritious food is burdensome. Where as if I identify with the self, feeding the body is just something that results in certain experiences separate from fulfilment. Being full and experiencing pleasure from that is different from being full or being hungry and still experiencing the happiness / satisfaction / love of being.
Damn thinking…. Thoughts are just thoughts. Like this seeker, I get wrapped up and thrown around by my “intelligent, sophisticated, reasonable” happiness-seeking mind.
I feel that the questioner was closer to the truth here. What ultimately he was pointing to is a koan of the spiritual path. Ruperts mode is to give an answer and try to lead a person to understanding but that in itself betrays a sense that the person is not where they are meant to be. I feel this person is exactly where they need to be, what Zen calls a ball of doubt. One that would lead to despair possibly. And this is the fallacy of the direct path and the idea that someone who spent decades on progressive and direct path can somehow help someone else to bypass all that. It's almost as ridiculous as Eckhart Tolle teaching all his concepts and techniques around presence when his awakening was preceded by nothing more or less that two years of deep depression.

Confused sleepy looking bunch. Maybe because there is a repetitive narrative with no end result, " like a parrot repeating itself in a cage" except this is a repetitive so called teacher in a retreat. Who is feeding whose head and what. I am speechless. It just looks like a battle of wits between two people. But I have to say, here we go again with the EGO. The real problem is the so called teacher and the subject do not have a clue what the ego really does and it's purpose nor how it derived to be implenmented. Basically all the EGO is, is a send and receive message tool from the Formed source source within to the physical brain. The EGO has no influence what so ever. You better pay attention to whats in your neuron's and its transmission lines ego tool is sending you. The so called teacher has just halted the subject from saying because it looks like the subject is taking over the retreat from the so called teacher. Sounds like it's too much hard work for the teacher to therefore better to put a halt to the subject. But the subject is legitimate in his asking and would get an answer if the teacher knew what the EGO really does and instead the teacher offers happy hippy love again which includes desire. When your Formed source can enlighten your physical brain of it's presence within and its imprinted knowledge, only then you will be happy.
When the head is full, the heart is empty, and life fades away. When the head is empty, the heart is full, and the joy of life returns.
Thereby opening doors for predators.
