The collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore was a result of a rare set of circumstances. A container ship named the Dali was maneuvering towards open waters after two days in the harbor in preparation for its next sail to Sri Lanka. Around 1:30 am, the Dali lost propulsion and power, and crashed into a bridge support buttress. Less than a minute later, the majority of the structure vanished beneath the surface of the Patapsco river.
Experts suggest that several factors may have contributed to the collapse. The bridge was built in 1972 and opened in 1977, but the size of container ships has changed drastically in the intervening decades. The collapse could have resulted from a mismatch between the size of the load on the Dali and the expected loads at the time of the bridge design. Older bridges like the Francis Scott Key bridge may not have sufficient pier protection cells to act as buffers, essentially stopping any colliding forces from directly making impact with support structures, which are not built to withstand such tonnage.
