  • A beautiful day on the boat with Capt. John, doing some traditional Maine lobstering, with a unique underwater perspective of lobster traps being hauled.....I highly suggest full screen and HD viewing.

Forgot to mention. In 1973 (I was 5) the family went on a ride-along, remember it like it was yesterday. and still got the pics. Can't imagine that Ol' Captain is still with us today!
I remember the trap buoy was also displayed on the roof of the wheelhouse for all to see. That way other fishermen knew who to shoot when crooked watermen were pulling traps that weren't theirs! LOL!
Great vid, bought back many memories.
Last few years I've been visiting family and raking clams in Chesapeke Bay in waist deep water.....man is that fun. And can be quite tiring!

Very nice video. Explain please how long time the traps stay down also do lobsters walk on the bottom in certain ways or paths? Is is becoming harder to catch? What kind of bait you use and say you had a hard time catching anything in an area so do you change the location? Please explain as much as you can. My family appreciate the hard work you do and I can easily explain why lobsters are not cheap. Thanks again.

Damn I'm in love with these lobstering vids. I just quit a 14 year plumbing career to walk the Appalachian trail. When I get to Maine in Oct I'd love to find my way on to a rig like yours. Tell me, whats the best way to convince a captain to trade some of his wisdom in exchange for a hard days work from some one who's green?

  • @CaptJohnsBar

Keeps the rope from running the whole length of the boat and if i were carring more gear on the stern it keep it from pulling the off....I have 700 traps and am satisfied with one lobster per trap on average.

Way up in the bays we fish singles to get in and around rocks, but as we move out we go to pairs, triples, quads and then to 25 trap trawls...I agree fishing is different everywhere....

Is this year round or are there certain months when you can't go out? Being Portuguese we have a deep respect for the ocean. We are taught this at an early age. One last question. Where abouts in Maine is this? Thanks again Cap.

New shell lobsters are around 3 dollars a pound to the fishermen and then a lot of greedy dealers get them and charge people an arm and a leg for them. Average sellable lobster for me is a 1 1/4 pound to a 1 1/2 pound.
