Vila “It works, Avon’s gadget actually works” Avon “It occurs to me that as a description of a highly sophisticated piece of technology, ‘Avon’s gadget actually works’ lacks a certain something.” B7 season B EP Trial
“I think his exact words were he planned to live forever or die trying. Let’s hope he hasn’t tried too hard” - Avon, Blake’s 7: The Classic Adventures (Mindset)
Poor Vila. If Jenna was eternally on her way to some gymkhana somewhere then Vila seems to be endlessly in search of the Alan Ayckbourn play that he has somehow escaped from. There is also a little bit of Tony Hancock in the performance too. He was always my favourite character and as a child taught me that if you were not the biggest, the strongest and the bravest that you could nevertheless use sarcasm and ironic understatement to considerable effect in many settings. Terrible lesson, really, but it has seen me through half a century (and counting) of life so far!
@@spacedoutgame I know it'll be much shorter, but will you be doing one for Gan? I know he wasn't in it a very long time, but looking back he was very much the Hodor of Blakes 7. Even his final words still strike hard.
Aw, Vila was always my favorite. Gauda Prime was rough on everyone, but I felt the worst about poor Vila. He reminded me of the anecdote about the man falling from the ten story building: As he passed each floor, people heard him saying "So far, so good", all the way down. For all he tried keeping out of danger, he put a light-hearted face on it when he got stuck.
0:55 Love Vila's opening here. He briefly came across as psychotic & definitely sinister but thereafter became just the show's comic relief. Only Paul Darrow stayed true to the original 'Dirty Dozen' concept. The Seven weren't meant to be nice people.
"The architectural style is early maniac" probably my favorite line from the entire show.

Vila: The heart & soul of Blake's 7
"I'm in Hell - and it's full of Avons!" The line of the series.
“I plan to live forever. Or die trying.”
"Die? I can't do that."
"Oh I'm afraid you can. It's the one talent, we all share. Even you."

Sounds like I need to go and read some Alan Ayckbourn plays! Excellent life advice - better a Vila than a Tarrant!
Thanks for this! One of the heroes of my childhood
He and Avon made it to the end by very different tactics. I like how he can actually do hand to hand when the need calls.. Orbit is a great episode.
Bloody love Vila. Thank you for all your videos on the best sci fi in British history.
You’re very welcome - this video was a genuine joy to put together!

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t going to - but happy to put it on the list!
Best Leonard Rossiter impersonator ever
You cut one of my favorite lines EVER:
"Use your 'delicate, skillful touch.'"
WHUMP
"I used my delicate, skillful boot!"

Vila has to be the best Blake’s 7 character next to Avon

I think Vila was my favourite character in Blakes 7. Maybe I empathise with him!
