3 weeks sober.. feeling MUCH better now. I’ve been drinking since I was 15 years old. I’m 42.. almost 30 years of feeling physically and mentally ill. I detoxed alone which was not smart. I didn’t die but I got dt’s. I was seeing things.. I had insomnia for nearly 6 days.. I wasn’t eating.. I was out of my mind.. Alcohol is no joke.. I used it to deal with a life time of fear, anxiety and depression. My heart goes out to anyone and everyone that has dealt with alcoholism or is dealing with it now. There is a solution and you don’t have to do this alone. Get help if you need it. There is no shame in that. God Bless!

I can relate to all of your experiences. The DT’s are the most horrifying thing I’ve ever been through. Fast forward to today, I am “happy, joyous, and FREE! More than 25 years of living the greatest adventure of my life. The “fellowship” was, and still is the solution for me. Best wishes to you!

How did you detox? How to you stop craving when you did quit? I've quit several times only to have a weak moment and take it back up again so have gone in Cycles probably off and on for 20 years. I've seen the benefits and no better. My life is changed with this covid and I know I always feel better when I am sober and accomplish a lot more and my motivation and drive comes back. I think I might be clinically depressed and that is why a yo-yo. Is there a book or some type of way to do it myself verses rehab which I can't afford and a therapist?

I’m 2 years sober and anyone who tells you it’s easy is lying. You may have to face emotional pain from the past, finally deal with a bad job or relationship, learn new coping skills, handle social anxiety and dating, relearn how to have fun, get new friends, get a new hobby, learn how to handle social pressure.. etc..

@@SoyDianaM Yup. I quit today. It almost feels like a decision at this point.
Made a bunch of action plans. Hobbies.
Don’t really want to be around environments where people are drinking anyway. Gym. Boxing. Passions. Learning to cook. Learning how to be better. So many other things to enjoy.
At this point I’m just choosing LIFE again.
Addiction starts with pain and ends with pain. For yourself and those you love.
There are places and activities where alcohol isn’t consumed at all. Just have to consciously seek them out.

One resource I found that succeeds in merging these is the Adoette drink plan (see the website SebsMagicTactic.com) definately the most incredible idea that I've heard of.

I didn’t drink all week , tonight I had a moment of craving at my
Buddy’s house due to him drinking. he gave one mixed drink ..I took a sip and poured the rest out ..Im staying strong , before this I was drinking insane amounts , I had a whiskey/scotch /bourbon /beer diet for many years, any other liquor for that matter..not always everyday but every single weekend and then eventually came to the majority of the week.. and it came to a health scare /some withdrawals... scared the shit out of me so I absolutely had to stop , I am trying to stay strong and stop . From just one week of not drinking I already felt a noticeable difference of feeling good, I need to keep this going , good luck to all!!

ayoal With all due respect, “staying strong” is a recipe for disaster. White knuckle sobriety is not sustainable. I humbly suggest that you seek a twelve step environment, and start living in the solution, instead of the problem. Best wishes to you! @@markg.4246 With all due respect Mark you're not an expert, no one is. The 12 steps is very effective but it is not for everyone. Stay strong Mark G. You will need that strength on more days than others. I've known of a person who stopped due to the fear of losing her family. Drinking occasionally is the 'new' harm reduction way that seems to be a bit tricky but it's just another relapse isn't it.

I believe that there's no guaranteed method to stop drinking forever so I don't exclude any of them. I've stopped relapsing so often, it's been the longest ever for me now. But I do believe that what we have to take care of is today, it's always one day at a time and anybody can do that.

Hi my name is Tim, I have been a very successful alcoholic for 43 years and and I enjoyed a lot of illicit medications as well. I am an Australian.and I believe that the culture in my country has always been accepting drinking alcohol as a life style.I regard myself as a functioning person on grog . I am an Embalmer or Mortician and very qualified over 25 years. However I'm 58 years old, lost my first wife to grog, lost my children, lost my driving licence twice, lost a one hundred thousand dollar job a year, and my second wife cannot stand me drinking with my new children, and the kids say why do you drink grog. I say because I can. Pretty horrible is it. Its hard to be an Aussie.

i was a heavy drinker and i would say what worked best for me was doing a salt water cleans (or 2) and then just straight up quitting cold turkey. i know its not recommended to go turkey but the side effects for me at least were very mild (even though i was up to a full bottle of wiskey/vodka a day) and after a few days, sleep returned to normal and it was all good after that. i think that whats even harder than quitting is staying quit especially after about a month of feeling great. for that, you can use a support system such as sober friends, aa, etc. also just realizing that you can do most of the same things sober and in many cases have an even better (longer lasting) time. good luck guys!

I'm afraid of being sober. life is not nearly as good as it is when I'm drunk, you know, the relaxation, when negative thoughts go away.
What I do think I should stop doing is drinking this much, cause a few beers are enough to get clamed down but what i want is to get lost, as drunk as I can. Besides, it's an expensive addiction. I fear to go back to sobriety.
I don't enjoy alcohol, alcohol enjoyes me.

True, you, lie I, as well as you, are a slave to alcohol. If you like me reducing consumption is not possible. I only have control over the first drink, after that I tend to drink until it is gone. Anxiety is a big thing for me as I think it is for you as well.

dzjahrk There is a way through to the other side of alcohol and when you get there you will start enjoying life much more than the life you have now. I’ll be honest with you it does take effort and a little time but then you get to be free free from alcohol free from the negativity and the burden of it all and you get to live a full life. Alcoholics anonymous was very helpful for me. I wish you all the freedom and joy in the world with love to you,

From there continued in the AA 12 step realm that we started and were introduced to in my treatment center. Working.....feel like a different guy. Didn't know how far I had slipped physically, mentally , everything until I stopped. Thank goodness for folks that can help if you want it

I'm 25. And I'm already at a point where I notice that alcohol is becoming a problem. My family is concerned, and it became a habitual and redundant way of escaping the stresses of life. I am currently keeping it in moderation with a glass of wine a night out. I am just tired of it as affecting my relationships and my performance overall.

The secret is to not dwell forever on the emotional side of recovery. Focus on educating yourself about the brain science and how it effects everything in the body physically.
You have to find new hobbies and push out of your comfort zone.
Don't fall for the trap of self identifying as an alcoholic -that just gives alcohol power over you by merely mentioning it or thinking it and that adds unconscious stress and youre more likely to go back to it because 'o well im a pathtic alcoholic'. Dont fall for that self identifying as being disordered. When you are empowered with the science knowledge you have power over alcohol, and alcohol just becomes a pathetic substance that has limited your self growth in ways you cant imagine yet.

Hi Ngare, if you can stopndrinling theough just wanting to stop and by just saying no day by day, that is great. If you can't do that and need to get to a phase called extinction, whereby you reprogram your brain so that pleasure is not associated with drinking alcohol, and you can commit to a lifetime of taking the medication when you drink, go for it. TSM can be very unpleasant. But very effective. If you want to be free, if you don't want to be stuck in the quicksand of alcohol misuse whereby your life is wasted (and you spend your time wasted!) Go for it. I just started TSM. My experience has been that I've taken two pills so far. I had the script filled and had the pills for a few weeks before taking one. When I did, I had some wine left over so I took a pill at the same time as drinking 2 glasses wine. I didn't take a low dose to get used to it. I took 50mg and also didn't do so she hour before but at the same time I took the wine. I was violently ill. Vomiting, nauseous, and I felt dreadful for two days and also had a bit of a psychotic episode. I pulled myself out. Then didn't drink for nearly three weeks. Then thought, well I'm supposed to be trying for extinction and that inlybhappens if you take the pills and drink. I was watching vids on TSM by a girl called Katie. Decided try again, took 1/2 pill and hour later drank some wine (I didn't even want to drink, but thought I should.). The wine tasted delicious. I should have just enjoyed o e glass and the taste. Instead I needed up drinking the bottle and was realky sick the next day, and the next; groggy, depressed....it's been a week and a bit and I do not feel like drinking at all and feel like I could just go without alcohol forever. This is probably no such an odd experience of TSM! I thought somehow I just wouldn't enjoy the wine, no buzz..the sickness was a surprise! Look for katies vids on RUclips sorry I can't remember her channel but you should find term a found blonde woman. Lots of vids on different aspects of tsm. It's certainly made me wake up myself. Stopped something that was out of control I was drinking about 40 units of Alcohol a week. Inherent always done that but I started drinking alcohol at 14 and have been a bjngedrinker, an abstainer, somehow usage always creeps up from a little every now and then to daily drinking. I feel so good without bogging my body and soul down with the booze. Its a means to proctastination and not facing feelings. Go to gp and talk about it and If your problem is serious you may need valium to stop seizures but be cateful as that is a hideous drug....v addictive. Don't want to swap one drug for another. I have temazepam to help, I take one every second night. Cravings do pass...you only have a little bit of time to go before tye craving will pass when most people give in to the craving instead of hangong in their. I eat a spoon of manuka honey and that gives you the sugar fix that youd get from alcohol and helps the cravings be satisfied. Good luck!

The person I’m concerned about is from a family of heavy drinkers and alcoholics. This person drinks every night and when he goes to social events, he gets shitfaced but thinks he hides it well and nobody knows. He’s obsessed with his alcohol collection and consumption but insists he doesn’t have a problem, that he just enjoys it, like it’s a hobby. It’s the lifestyle he was raised in and it’s normal for him. He plays beer sports, like softball and sand volleyball several times a week and loves country music songs, many of which validate his drinking lifestyle. He seriously does not think he has a problem bc he holds down a job and isn’t a sloppy drunk.
It’s ruining his marriage but his wife is not divorcing him because she does want him to have split custody or any custody of their daughter. He is manipulative and she will not risk her toddler being exposed to his or his family’s lifestyle without her there supervising and protecting her child and the only way she can do this is if she stays married to him.
Can anyone address this type of drinking problem and explain how he is a heavy drinker but hides it so well from people. He insists he doesn’t need to drink, that he just enjoys it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is great. Just the opening alone gives me clarity. Alcohol is my second go-to. I don't think about it that much, but when I drop my drug of choice it gets more of my attention.
I'm left to figure out my relationship with it. I wanted to drop my pot habit and in recovery I was told alcohol had to go too... I wasn't ready to consider it. I don't have a problem with it today, but I can see where my addiction could try to use it as a substitute.
I don't even really like alcohol, but being told I need to give it up to recover activates my rebellion, and to think of it eliminated makes me think of the situations I'll feel excluded from.
I agree the antidote is connection, but I struggle to find it in NA... I'm ultra thankful one of the other recovery 2.0 videos said there were MA groups. I found those rooms and found my people. It was only dudes, but one reached out to some women and got them in touch with me...
I'm still connection starved to a degree... But I'm holding on with more hope now than ever before.
