FairPoint but her music is really good and that's the part where it should be like her vocals are amazing she has phenomenal vocal control on a very crazy level compared to other artists She writes all of her songs very well she's a top-tier performer her music videos are very creative and well put together The way she blends different genres of music and time periods of music together seamlessly is also amazing like her art in general is just phenomenal She's basically what azealia Banks will probably be thinking of with artistic excellence is when she was saying cardi b is not that
@@rellenoz read the comments on Hot To Go Southeast Asia in her youtube channel, though it can only be accessible through vpn, then get back to us saying she has no staying power as a worldwide popstar, bc she already is
As a black women I understand the comment with the if a black women did it she would be scrutinized but Chappell literally is getting dragged for her setting boundaries and "talking back" people are literally calling her a bitch for it so she’s definitely getting scrutinized it’s not just people living all I’ve seen is hate no shade 😂❤
All I ever see in regards to her name is some article calling her a bitch and mean. The only positive things I see are her awards and her fans, to be honest. I hate that for me. I wanna see the positive stuff too :(
I started loving her when i realize her vibe is a dolled up girl, dancing and having fun on stage unapologetically, out lesbian, 80s drama, the drag love letters…. She is just a breath of fresh air of a pop star.
Yeah this is why I’m into her. Honestly, the way her vocals sound at the beginning of HOT TO GO: “I could be the one, or your new addiction It's all in my head but I want non-fiction I don't want the world, but I'll take this city Who can blame a girl? Call me hot, not pretty” she sounds so freaking 80’s! ❤❤
A black woman would def get even more hate for standing up for herself, but let’s not act like everyone was praising her for calling the paps out. I think in general women get silenced and told they need to shut up and put up w inappropriate behavior
Yeah even as a black girl the whole comparison thing gets annoying because yes it’s not fair but is that Chappells fault?? She worked her ass off for years I’m so sick of people making our issues their issue to fix lol
@@evtv304 y'all need to understand that when we talk about white privilege, we aren't saying that they never face backlash, or never go through any hardships. we're saying if we compared those situations to situations that black people experienced that were either the same, or far less problematic, black people still get the short end of the stick. we get dragged more for far less. regardless of skin tone, people are going to hate on both sides. but one side gets far more hate than the other, idk why y'all can't get that
@@gracedesstan nowhere has anyone ever said it's her fault. you need to understand it has nothing to do with chappell, and everything to do with how the world works for us. she's just an example. her vocals are fine, stage presence fine, she's perfectly fine, it's just compared to other artists, she can get away with a lot more than they can. that doesn't mean she should have to step it up, or quit doing xyz, but other artists shouldn't be required to do or behave better, for a lot less, if that makes sense
She would have been deleted from existence! They wouldn’t have allowed that. The standards are sadly different and after this last election probably always will be.
i don't think you realize that people have harassed chappell for months over that. her identity definitely plays a part too, because people hate "mean" lesbians
omg zach you NEED to tune into hemlocke springs!!! she’s a black alt pop girl who’s a smaller artist than chappell, but has somewhat of a similar sound and has creative visuals with her music videos like chappell roan. i think you’d DEFINITELY enjoy to see her, a black woman, make music in a fun alt pop type of way!! she was also one of the openers for doja cat’s scarlet tour and was an artist chappell roan herself recommended in an interview she did. i can’t remember which one, but i remember she did recommend her as an artist to listen to
Thanks for the recommendation. I listened some of her songs and I liked them so much. She sounds so 80s but with a modern touch. I hoped she becomes mainstream because she deserves it
just on the comment she voted for trump she absolutely didnt 😭😭 she spoke out multiple times about voting for kamala but not endorsing her due to her refusal to back trans rights and to stop the genocide in palestine !! i get the misconception but we all know how certain media outlets love to take things out of context lol
Chappell said that she was voting for Kamala but didn't like either option because they both aren't loud enough on human rights (specifically gaza), but there's absolutely 0 chance that she voted for Trump.
imagine being that privileged that you think that the war in gaza (that they started and said they don't regret and will do again), is more important that what's going on in America.... Some of you have really been brainwashed
I don’t think she did herself, but she has openly said she has family members who did & that people should respect them. But with all due respect, ain’t no way I will support or respect a Trump voter even if it’s my own family. I lose a little respect every right wing trip they go down
It's crazy the way people twist Chapell's comments about Kamala but constantly complain online about celebrities not speaking enough about human rights. When Chappell finally stood on business people wanted to backtrack and be like, "but not like that!"
yeah idk why people hate talking about democrats flaws. When trump is in office supporting genocide im sure everyone will be talking about it but since harris is a democrat we’re supposed just ignore that same genocide she is actively supporting…
8:24 one day we as a society gotta address that the expectation that women have to serve looks, vocals and choreo to be considered talented or interesting is misogynistic as hell. I’ve never once seen anyone be disappointed a male artist isn’t dancing but, as always, the expectations for women are in another stratosphere. especially for black women because, like you said, they’re giving more than just twirling around and it’s because they HAVE to and it shouldn’t be that way and I’m over it
Because the target demographic of male singers only want a pretty face, bland songs and that's about it. Male singers will always have it easier if their audiences keep on being okay with mediocrity. Being a performer, regardless of your gender, should be about putting on an enticing show. Only gay/queer male artists achieve this. It's not entirely about misogyny but it's also about holding men to very mediocre standards.
Sorry but no one wants to see Shawn Mendes of Eminem bust a move on stage. Why are you all acting like this is some sort of epidemic 💀 yes, we generally expect some sort of pageantry from female pop stars because that's kinda been the gig for the past several decades. If you wanna be Fiona Apple rolling around in the mud then that's fine too.
She can sing her ass off, the aesthetics are stellar, she’s a great performer, she writes her songs, she has a strong artistic vision, her album is bursting with personality…I’m looking and I honestly can’t spot any glaring weaknesses: I can’t say she lacks skills, I can’t she’s all style and no substance because she’s got both, and I definitely can’t call her boring. Regardless, she’s objectively emerging as one of the more interesting, well-rounded, Pop artists (male or female) to break into the mainstream this decade so I’m curious to see where she goes from here. 🤔
All this is exactly right which is why I too wonder why she does nothing for me. I hate when someone has all the ingredients for the perfect recipe but it still doesn't hit (for me). Good luck babe will always have been in a choke hold though!
@@SaidByTy Agreed. He acknowledges all the fundamentals are there, he actively looked for weaknesses, and struggled. @@iamshakuri girl she was running for president. she had her own policies, and they included not caring very much about palestine. refusing to endorse a politician until they change their mind on a big issue, especially pre-election, is such a normal thing to do. also, no one said anything about muslims and jewish people. that's not what this is about. i've also transcribed a ton of federal and presidential documents, and the VP does more than you seem to think they do
no it drives me nuts, like just cuz you’re too shallow to look deeper into her policies other than she’s a woman, black and not trump doesn’t mean others don’t and people are allowed to have a little bit of an issue about her clapping and cheering for a genocide
She also defended her dozens of midwestern family members who voted for Trump. And did she say she was critical of kamala bc of Palestine? Or just that she felt both people had their faults & that’s why she can’t endorse (which is what I heard). Which they both do … but it’s not the same thing. Also thought it was funny that her major platform was “trans rights” but she felt that both campaigns were virtually the same on that
People are hating on Chappell for the paparazzi shit which is wild. She doesn’t owe them shit, they have been saying things about Chappell being too much and she signed up for it.
Well she did, she didn’t become viral on tik tok by accident when she was living in her farm, she wanted that life, she tried for YEARS to get where she is now, and yes, she owes the paparazzis, if she goes to an EVENT, there’s going to be paparazzis doing their JOB, take photos, and Chappell should do her job too which is to pose, if she hates that then she should’ve stayed at home, it’s that simple
@@imthatguyt100 lmao shes not. she is entitled to have privacy, she is entitled to not have people treat her like shit. the fact that you think she should just bow down to whatever papparazzi want is wild.

Attacking people for taking photos, and attacking news outlets like BILLBOARD for reporting her music news is just bad form.
She was a small Midwest Indie Pop girlie pop who blew up this year. No huge pop production or live choreography, just vocal talent and strong writing. And she doesn't want to be anything more. She has a place in the industry and I enjoy what she's doing.

@@therealvlad505 her family is definitely not rich and she has worked as a nanny, a barista, and at a donut shop. up until last year I believe. if her family was rich enough to make her famous she wouldn't have taken those jobs
Plssss where did the whole Chappell voting for Trump thing come from? I’ve just never heard that. I know she critiqued Kamala’s stances on Palestine, but nothing beyond that.
it came from randoms with no common sense that thought criticizing one side (and the other) meant full support of the other. the most popular posts spreading misinformation about and criticizing her for what she said were very public zionists too with a clear agenda against her for what she's been continually saying in support of palestine.
She explains everything in a TikTok, it’s definitely worth the watch if you were wondering why people were hating on her about that. It’s the fourth video on her TikTok if you start at the top of her page.
I’m NOT the biggest fan. But as someone who came out later in life, Pink Pony Club is the song that got to me. When I heard at the gym one day I realized that’s what the younger version of me wanted, to be loved and accepted and expressive of who I am
Chappell is that artist that you can’t force things with, it will spark on its own, because I felt the same like 2 months ago but one day I started to sing Hot To Go and after came Good Luck, babe then femininomenom and the rest is history 🙂
Ok so, you haven’t been tuned in online to the Chappell discourse so I understand your mindset when it comes to her being white and “being able to speak her mind without pushback” in contrast black counterparts, which in general is true, but Chappell definitely HAS been getting MASSIVE blowback from “being too hard to work with” and “complaining too much”. GP is half here for her and half absolutely tired of her (but I personally think they’re blowing it out of proportion). I do have to disclose that I am black and am a MASSIVE Chappell STAN! I saw her open for Olivia in Miami and her energy and vocals are actually insane! As soon as she left the stage, I knew she was going to blow up and this was before Coachella and I wish I got into her even EARLIER since the album came out last year in October.
I’ve only seen a few people praising her for setting boundaries. The majority is people bashing her for being ungrateful. Also need to remind people that she didn’t just blow up over night, regardless of whether you like her or not. She’s been grappling for years to get to where she is now.
thats the thing, she DOESNT have boundaries, shes not setting boundaries. Shes trying to police other peoples behavior instead of actually setting barriers and not giving attention to things that aren't worth her time, get security, mind your own business, stop looking like an idiot that thinks because she's famous she can tell people how to act.
@@chinaplzdotcomShe said the stalking and creepy behavior of literally showing up to her family’s house, following her around, harassing her, etc. is NOT okay or normal behavior. And she’s right, that’s scary and weird. She said that they need to stop, and that she feels unsafe when they do that. How is that “policing” behavior and not simply setting a boundary of “hey, this isn’t okay with me, stop doing it?” The definition of setting a boundary is establishing limits for how you want to be treated by others, so she is quite literally setting boundaries, not “policing” people’s behaviors. Maybe instead of criticizing a woman for setting boundaries, we should be criticizing the people that think it’s okay to follow celebrities around, to show up to their family’s houses and harass them, to harass celebrities, or to stalk them.
Ok so just to clear this up entirely, Chappell absolutely did not vote for Trump! She’s a far left leaning girlie meaning that all she was saying was she didn’t feel comfortable endorsing (but was still voting for) Kamala because of Kamala’s support for Israel and the democratic parties overall very loud silence regarding trans issues and individuals in the run up to the election. Let’s not get that twisted !!
Well she must’ve slow because EVERY presidential candidate HAS to support Israel wether they do deep down or not, the alternative to Kamala was always far worse for trans people and Gaza, her expressing her dislike for Kamala when trump is planning to do 100x worse for marginalised communities shows her ignorance.
@@deevasquez1171 So what you’re not acknowledging here is context. Chappell never outright expressed a dislike for Kamala. She was interviewed for an article (in which she explicitly stated how proud she was to live in a time when a black woman was running for presidency) and during the interview, she was asked if she felt pressure to endorse a candidate, and she gave an honest answer. That’s all there is to it. Her words were then subsequently taken completely out of context, leading people to label her a Trump supporter, which she later clarified. Her stance is that she supports a free Palestine and could not morally endorse Kamala because of Kamala’s position on Israel and no, Chappell’s point was not about ignorance but about holding the U.S. accountable for funding a genocide that has led to the slaughter of thousands of innocent people. Her take was clear, nuanced, and anything but uninformed. If you’re comfortable living in a world where we keep quiet and simply accept the options presented to us, that’s your choice girl! However, many of us refuse to settle for that and will continue to challenge these systems. And that certainly doesn't make Chappell ‘slow’ for simply being honest about her concerns.
Kamala doesn’t support Israel. She was calling for ceasefire, but now she wouldn’t have had the opportunity because of people who thought like Chappell. Now everyone in America that’s not a rich white man is at risk and Chappells been silent since
I still find it funny, how you would support a different country over your own rights. To me it just showed her privilege. Kamala was the only one that wanted a ceasefire and supported Gaza. So why would she not want to show support for her?
you are definitely correct that a black woman would be grossly treated if they defended themselves like chappell, but let’s not act like chappell isn’t also receiving tons of hate for it. just for simply standing up for herself and not taking disrespect like every other celebrity does.
It seems like she’s got mostly support and praise for standing up for herself. The conversation about the racial implications is the only thing I’ve heard about her standing up for herself specifically
Girl, Chappel isn't the one denying black women opportunities. It's unfair to be mad at her specifically - and not any other white woman artist out there. If anything, Chappel Roan is advocating for minorities way more than any of her contemporaries. It's absolutely tone-deaf to say she voted for Trump. If any american politician comes close to being aligned with her views, it's Bernie Sanders and AOC.
I'm assuming you didn't watch the video all the way through, he clarified like 12 times that he doesn't blame her specifically. He even said he deserves everything she is receiving. I would tag a specific moment, but its like all throughout the video lol
glad you touched on black artists getting support to be more expansive in their music - thinking of Hemlocke Springs (feel like she is Chappell adjacent but isn't as well known) check out sever the blight or heavun
We can go back and forth about her music ALL DAY music is subjective but what NO ONE can take from Chappell is her hard work ethic and dedication to her craft you can tell she actually cares about her sound it has substance which is what a-lot of artist in this tic tok age don’t have I’m grateful we have people like Chappell pushing their pin and giving spotlight to the LESBIAN experience and community which we lesbians RARLEY get in pop music.❤
@@valerie8679 I know. I love choreo too, dance got me into music in the first place. But even I can distinguish between a recording artist who is "all style over substance" vs another who possesses both in abundance. Dance could never cloud my judgment to that degree, There's no amount of backflips Tate McRae could do to convince me that she has stronger fundamentals than Chappell, or Sabrina, or Charli or Olivia, or Billie etc. Zach is also 30 years old, so Tate channeling a style of performance artistry from his youth that he likely finds highly nostalgic is probably why he rates her. I recall him saying he's "not worried about the next 10 years of Pop music" after watching Tate's "It's Ok, I'm Ok". Hot take and a half to give about song whose only redeeming quality is its choreography.😬
@@AXFN_ I fully agree with you. I myself have been trying to get into Tate but I don't think she's got the artistry that Chappell posses. Her music also lacks authenticity or personality, and it's not melodic at all, and while she's an amazing dancer, I don't find her to be a particularly engaging performer. Tho that may just be me, since I can't connect with her music. She can dance, yet her whole performance is lip synced. I much prefer Chappell who may not dance, but is super high energy and engages with the crowd.
@@valerie8679 It's definitely NOT just you. I would say this is the objectively correct take. Her music is contrived and inauthentic imo, deep as a puddle, nothing to say, and painfully underwritten for having such giant writing partners like Ryan Tedder. Fantastic dancing but little else that's noteworthy. She has a new album coming in Feb though so maybe she'll change our minds? I find her a very weak vocalist with an extremely nasal tone, similar to Camila Cabello. I struggle to tolerate both, but at least Camila has a wider vocal range to work with, Tate doesn't even have that, so she's forced to rely on the dancing to bring it home. The strategy worked for Britney, so maybe it will work for her? She's only 21 so she's got the rest of the decade to improve, plus she sold out MSG so she clearly has a fanbase.
i find it funny you mention not liking the performance bc that's the whole reason she went viral in the first place and why she's getting record breaking audiences at all festivals. she may not be a choreo girl, but i don't think everyone needs to be, she commands the stage and is VERY high energy and involved with the crowd. maybe you need to get into the songs first, to then appreciate the performance aspect? but i get it if you're a choreo only supremacist, why she may not be for you.
What got me into her was the camp of her music. I got into Chappell when she was a very small artist. She didn't blow up until this past spring/ summer. She has been around for almost a decade. Hearing her music and living for how tongue in cheek it is and then being able to scream the campiest queer lyrics with my friends in the car was what made me a fan. Getting to scream them with thousands of people at her shows is what made me a stan. It's all about the experiences and memories tied to her music. No, she is not gonna give you what Gaga, Beyoncé, etc will give but it is about the community and experiences that her music creates and reminds you of. She was just a small queer indie artist not too long ago, so I'm sure her live performances will evolve and transform in the next few years. Her brand is mainly queer camp though. I am glad I know her music from before her "blow up" because I think who she is/ who her music is for what it stands for is a little lost in the hype. And that is a fault of the GP jumping on the bandwagon and not of her/ her team. I hope you give the album a full devoted listen just because her magic is in her music and the rest follows!

i feel like you must not be online a lot if you think chappell is not getting hate for the things she says/does. she's literally stan twitter's punching bag at the moment, the entirety of tiktok hates her too. but chappell is for the girls that get it, and those who get it REALLY get it and stand behind her.
no many ppl defending her (as they should at least with some situations) and I think you’re too online if you’re concerned abt other people having a different taste than you
Listen to Kaleidoscope. That song is the one that clinched me. She serves so much everloving CUHN when she is in her ballad bag. While I love her pop essence, I feel like it’s been a vehicle for her to get into the mainstream before doing a pivot back to what she did as an indie artist - overwrought, emotional, layered artistry with a lyrical prowess that munches and crunches some of the best of them.
She was a grower for me too, but now I stan! And I see Chappell Roans success as very organic as people listened to and fell in love with her music ever since she released her album in 22. She got dropped from her original label, and did odd jobs eg at a donut shop while recording her music, and making low budget music videos with clothes she thrifted, so I love that without being pushed and having lots of financial backing she is able to become this successful! I do agree with you though I would love to see more racial diversity in pop music right now amongst the new gen z artists!
she didnt vote for trump she voted for Kamala she just said she didnt want to endorse bc she wanted the candidates to be more trans rights and she has been a big advocate for Palestine which i think is fair it was an out of context interview i dont think its bad for this young generation to want more from their politicians unfortunatly the election results were what they were
Regarding the comment towards the paps, it was caught on camera when the paparazzi told her to shut up and thats why many people sided with her HOWEVER, there were even MORE people bothered by her speaking up for herself... it can be a race thing at times, but this isn't one of those times because of the backlash she received. Especially on Instagram
The situation is very simple, the generations of gay divas are different.I'm from Brazil, I took the LADY Gaga Katy Perry Beyoncé train, the Trinity, which will definitely arrive by the end of the century, firm and strong, except for Katy Perry, of course. My perception is that the market is so globalized and so plural that artists who used to be very Indie in 2010 are becoming super mainstream now
Zach you every right to stand firm on your opinions, we need more of that honesty. It allows people to properly articulate what they like and have higher standards for artists/ celebrate the artists who really give it all.
i feel like no one can really make a valid claim on her music without listening to midwest princess, it really is the missing puzzle piece for the ppl that don't understand chappell yet. a masterpiece!!!!!!
chappell makes music for women, her songs give me joy and her sad songs make me sad. i get her entire vibe. this is the best way i can explain it. she has a very particular demographic. when the baby swifties grow up, they will love chappell
This is how I feel about Tate Mcrae. I don't know why I can't get into her music, but I want to. But I love Chappell Roan. I love how she doesn't back down, she stands in her artistry, she knows her vision and where she wants to go, she gives visuals, vocals, and a new musical perspective. I love her music. Casual is my favorite song by her. But I also feel you that a black artist, especially a black women, would have been dragged and compared to a r@cist sterotype or called sassy, but I also think there would be people living for it, but not be vocal in their support.
It’s the white woman energy. Gaga’s white but she doesn’t exude that in the same way. Katy Perry didn’t either but it’s coming out now hence her flop. Kesha owned it early on in her career with her white trash/party girl persona and made it fierce, and Brittany had a natural cool factor. With people like Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan, they just don’t have that natural cool factor, hence why they have the same appeal to the same type of people. But Chappell’s talented and I wish her the best!
Touché ! That's exactly what We are talking about. That kind of WICKED and rancid aura around those type of WHITE WOMEN is blatant. They are not authentic at all
I think there’s a few points to go over. 1. I think there is enough of an age gap between her and some older millennials where we just aren’t vibing. 2. People are projecting their feelings onto her because she unfortunately is becoming big at the same time Trump is heading back into office. I doubt she’s actually a Trump supporter and those who say they don’t feel there is a space for POC at her shows are projecting/making those feeling up because of what is happening in our current politics. (I’m a mixed POC, so hold your tongue to those who try to bash that statement). 3. She hasn’t had the funding other pop girls have had long enough to have dance lessons and good choreographers to help with her stage presence. Look at Dua Lipa for example. That’s all.
it’s not projections it’s fact - just bc we acknowledge that she has privilege to some extent doesn’t mean she’s being antagonized or that it’s her fault bc she’s definitely not
as someone who gets labeled as "hard to work with" because I defend myself, document with camera times (former teacher), if I was a director, I would hire all those "hard to work with" to get to know them myself. They usually are labeled like that because they are not gonna take no Sugar Honey Ice Tea from ANYONE. The ones that are really hard to work with are the yes men and the brownnosers.
not even a big fan of chappell but I am checking for her as a queer woman. but I love that chappell is such a diva towards the paparazzi so I don’t get the discourse surrounded by it cause we (gays generally) live for mariah’s, xtina’s, or britney’s diva/shady moments I don’t see it as a ‘not fit for fame’ I see it has a strong woman defending herself. You so right tho a WOC would get absolutely crucified for behaving in the same way, unfortunately.
I will say this. You have to stop bringing normani into this conversation. She took a hiatus (understandably so bc I know her parents had cancer) and she doesn’t promote the music that is out. It’s no shade!! Chappell has been promoting this album for 2 years now! Her work ethic has nothing to do with race!
I think Chappell's performance clicks a lot more when you consider who her performing icon is, which is Freddie Mercury. Freddie never had choreo, he was considered a good performer for always singing live, being very high energy and theatrical, emoting, and engaging the crowd. Chappell does all of those things, in my opinion from what I have seen. She still has a chance of improving even more, of course, but I really reject the idea that you need choreo to be a good performer.
I think for me, personally, the most important part of Chappell’s artistry and why I’M grabbed by her is because she is so OVERTLY and unapologetically queer and having that in the mainstream is amazing to see. I do find it frustrating as well that we often only see “pop girls” as they need to be clones of Britney Spears or someone like that and that they all have to follow the same formula of dancing and crazy visuals and 50 dancers and all of that. The expectation is really really terrible that female artists have to always do all of these things to ensure that people aren’t “bored” when they can and DO have impact by just being themselves. It’s largely Chappell’s relatability for people as a midwestern queer girl that she’s just like a girl’s girl onstage and isn’t trying to be like anyone but herself. To me, her performing the way she does with super gay lyrics is all I could really ask for and it makes me happy :)
personally i think shes very unique and a breath of fresh air for the pop girls. but some people arent for others, just bc shes not your taste doesnt mean anything negative abt you or her. my fav song of hers is Red Wine Supernova
I was the same as you at first, but for the opposite reason! I’d actually listened to her album in 2023 when it came out and wasn’t moved by it, but when Good Luck, Babe! dropped and I saw her live performances this year, I became so captivated and revisited her album and LOVED it the second time around! That being said, she was definitely a grower artist for me, but I’m so so glad I stuck around and gave her another chance! Hopefully she’ll grow more on you too :)
For me, it's a mood thing. Chappells music is, as you said, kind of indie-pop-ish and also (maybe thats a description you were looking for) pretty theatrical. Rather high concept, kind of dramatic storytelling. And sometimes that's just what i need and on other days i just want fierce pop girls like Gaga, Beyonce, etc
I saw her perform live in a HYUGE crowd and everyone was singing and dancing their heart out. I felt so free and in awe of it all. Did I feel that at the same level as I did at Renaissance? Nope but she still slayed.
Are we playing this as a black vs white artist thing? Mad that your fave is being criticized so let’s make a sad attempt to drag a famous black artist? Not everyone needs to like Chappel Roan or Beyoncé but you can’t deny Zach made a point here and it makes you uncomfortable

Let's be real here, I wouldn't even consider it as a "race" thing but it's more of a generation thing. Zach is a full-blown millennial, Gen Zs tend to appreciate Chappell a lot more for certain age demographic reasons (i.e. the topic of her songs, attitude, personality, etc.)
I can’t say I’m a fan of hers yet but I do think it is about finding the right song. I’m not into the pop rock songs but the one that grabbed me was Picture You. It’s a very different vibe, sultry and longing, and that voice was PRESENT
I was a part of Gaga generation, and it took me a while to take her in too. But she’s actually a great singer and writer. I had to block out the visuals FIRST, and make it about the music…and now I get it.
I suggest watching her Tiny Desk performance. That's what got me to pick up my phone and stream her music at all. It showed her "idgaf" ik im dat girl personality and it was so fab. Her album wouldv'e been added to the long list of music I say im gonna listen to but never do...but im so glad I took the time to listen to it
7:32 Being aware of your white privilege doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stand for yourself when you need to. She did what she did to protect herself, and considering she is a queer woman in a very toxic industry, she already has a lot to deal with. We all want to move things forward to a better place, and it starts with ourselves. If we all stop calling it out bad behaviors because of whatever privilege we have, we all lose.
"Let me tell you something Miss Chap Chap"😂😂 As a lesbian who loves the Alternative vibe, I havent really gotten into Miss Chap Chap, but this video might get me more intrigued. I don't think she voted for truump, she just pointed out that the Left is not free from criticism, which is true. If you see the news happening now that is apparent. But yeah, I might check out more of her songs.
I'm a little monster myself (been here since the applause reaction days), and I feel you so hard on this, HAHAHSDK I think when you've been into an artist like Gaga, and when you've seen her performances, and the way she's so intentional and uses her fashion and eccentric looks to communicate and translate the whole vibe of an era, or her songs, turning the whole thing it into a full concept, it just clicks immediatly... but when we watch live performances from artists like Chappel Roan, and we see her all dolled up like that, noticing the effort she puts into her stage and looks, that we are kinda set up for higher expectations... I do think that her "drag persona" sometimes does not serve her songs and music too much imo, sometimes it's just distracting and steals the show a bit (which is her songwriting and vocals). Her music and songs are usually personal, and her instrumentals are stripped back and mellow, so it's an odd contrast with the way she presents herself which overshadows the more delicate and vulnerable aspects of her music. I've heard songs from her that trasmit one vibe when i listen to them, but when i see her live in her over the top "style" I just get distracted because i think she's about to do something crazy, but she never does, and the song doesn't call for it either hahahaah so it's like she could maybe make the song stand out doing something that favors the music itself, and not so much just as an aesthetic .... so yehhh, this video of you being honest and forward was validating because I've also found a hard time getting into her, even though i know she's talented and has something to say.
I tried SO HARD to not like Chappell (I hate following trends I'm just weird), but she was EVERYWHERE and I was captivated by her lyricism. She tells these unique stories that are also heavily influenced by real life experiences. Now I'm obsessed and there's no going back
Chappell absolutely did NOT vote for Trump. In fact, she said in an IG story “fu*k Trump” and that she was voting for Kamala Harris. Where the confusion came from is that she didn’t want to ENDORSE either candidate because, quote “I don’t agree with a lot of what is going on with policies. Obviously f*ck the the policies of the right, but also f*ck some of the policies on the left. That’s why I can’t endorse. “ The controversy was about her not wanting to endorse either candidate because she hates Trump and the conservatives but she also has issues with the Democrats. She’s actually more leftist than the Democrats (who, as a party, are pretty centrist actually). She clarified that she was voting for Kamala but voting is different than endorsing. She also has a MAJOR issue with how both parties are still supporting Israel, which is essentially helping to fund the genocide in Palestine as well as both being varying levels of transphobic. That’s why she wouldn’t endorse Kamala Harris. She still voted for her because the Conservatives and Trump go against literally everything she stands for. Just wanted to clear that up because so many people were spreading misinformation. Oh, btw, when asked what change she wanted to see in US politics she said, “Trans rights. They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people. Period. Hope this clears up her politics for you. She’s basically more left than the left (at least the left representation in the Democrats).
I JUST got into Miss Girl! It took a minute but she grew on me! The album is soooooo good!! I think it’s one of those things, you have to let it sneak on you. But I didn’t understand the hype for a while but when I say I love her now, I mean it!! Imagine you’re at pride and you and your other gay bestie are the ONLY gays who didn’t know the songs. I was so confused but now I get it
I understand your point, and I get that it might simply be that you don’t like her, but I don’t agree with you always bringing up the barrier of skin color. Comparing her to Black singers doesn’t make any sense because skin color doesn’t define talent
And saying she always gets praised for everything is only half true, because after what happened with the photographer, a lot of people dragged her on social media
@@ominisi Also she wasnt just criticized for the Paparazzi interaction. She had received criticism from within her own fandom about her personal views regarding not cutting off republican family members and saying she will no endorse Kamala. And something about cancelling a show due to mental health reasons.
Does skin color define talent? No. But it does define how you get treated in Hollywood and the music industry. Zach isn’t wrong about that. Many darker female artists are called ugly, niche, and have to work very hard to be noticed. I can’t 100% speak on Chappell because I don’t listen to her but many black artists who aren’t light skinned with a certain look are getting overlooked. If Doja Cat wasn’t pretty and light skinned, a song like Moo would’ve never blew up the way it did.
@@kennethiavail1719 I totally agree 100%, but my point is that besides that, there are other things the industry considers. In this case, Chappel has that disruptive personality that makes her stand out. She’s always been like that, and maybe that’s why people connect with her, not because she’s white, but because she’s authentic and real. That’s why she has thousands and thousands of fans, because she appeals to an audience that genuinely supports her, not just people who are into her for her looks like some other artists. Chappel isn’t just talented, she’s real, and people love her for who she is. She’s allowed to be herself, not because she’s white. That view is too simplistic and fits a narrative that might be true for other artists who benefit from white privilege, but with her, it’s just not the case. That’s where Zach gets it wrong in my opinion.
@@ominisi and I agree but Chappelle being a white woman, she can’t opt out of that privilege. She has the privilege to be herself and be disruptive. Many black artists don’t get that privilege. Chappelle just happens to be talented which is great but, there are black artists who are disruptive and talented and set trends yet where are they? They aren’t on huge stages and having successful tours that they get the privilege to cancel. A black artist who was on the up and up could never cancel tour dates because they’re overwhelmed because those opportunities don’t come for us the same way they do for others. White artists get to sing about whatever they want to and have that freedom. Chappelle has that freedom to be the artist she wants to be.
I love Chappell. Her voice is insane. As a singer I really wish I have her chops. I would also die to have her songwriting skills. I loved this call! I appreciate you. I also agree with pretty much everything you said, especially about race and black women artists being treated differently if they speak up or just how much they are expected to do to get far. You are right, it’s just the truth.
Her album Midwest princess is essentially a greatest hits album. It’s iconic. No skips. The thing that works is she has good vocals, good general audience sound with mass appeal and the gays. I mean cmon. The black girls ain’t doing this. They being overly sexualized and singing r&b or rap. Not this kinda mass appeal pop music AND THATS THE TEA.
Mind you Chappell just starting popping when she got with the gays and Gaga-fied her outfits and performances. She was nothing when she was a basic white girl with the same music last year.
She got with the gays got Gaga-fied and that grabbed the attention. The attention was further propelled by the good music and label capitalized and backed her and push her into mainstream
I don't really care for the new pop girlies but Chappell woke up something in me and made me like the genre again 🤫 she definitley brought something fresh to the table imo. It's a new sound while also giving old school vibes at the the same time, so I can appreciate how dynamic her music is 😌

She writes all of her songs very well she's a top-tier performer her music videos are very creative and well put together
The way she blends different genres of music and time periods of music together seamlessly is also amazing like her art in general is just phenomenal

It's crazy the way people twist Chapell's comments about Kamala but constantly complain online about celebrities not speaking enough about human rights. When Chappell finally stood on business people wanted to backtrack and be like, "but not like that!"

Eh
Kamala doesn’t support Israel. She was calling for ceasefire, but now she wouldn’t have had the opportunity because of people who thought like Chappell. Now everyone in America that’s not a rich white man is at risk and Chappells been silent since
I still find it funny, how you would support a different country over your own rights. To me it just showed her privilege. Kamala was the only one that wanted a ceasefire and supported Gaza. So why would she not want to show support for her?
you are definitely correct that a black woman would be grossly treated if they defended themselves like chappell, but let’s not act like chappell isn’t also receiving tons of hate for it. just for simply standing up for herself and not taking disrespect like every other celebrity does.

right?? it’s literally become a “trend” to make “jokes” about how she was getting stalked and about her mental health.
Oh ... Poor INSUFERABLE WHITE WOMAN ... :(
glad you touched on black artists getting support to be more expansive in their music - thinking of Hemlocke Springs (feel like she is Chappell adjacent but isn't as well known) check out sever the blight or heavun
She’s actually been VERY vocal about NOT voting trump and voting Kamala despite her horrific policies in Gaza😕

Zach being ambivalent toward Chappell Roan yet LIVING for Tate McRae is WILD. No shade. Trying to decode the logic behind that... 🤔
@@AXFN_ he likes choreo.
No, I get it. Tate is fierce and gives sass in both her music and videos. That's what he lives for.
She's only 21 so she's got the rest of the decade to improve, plus she sold out MSG so she clearly has a fanbase.
i find it funny you mention not liking the performance bc that's the whole reason she went viral in the first place and why she's getting record breaking audiences at all festivals. she may not be a choreo girl, but i don't think everyone needs to be, she commands the stage and is VERY high energy and involved with the crowd. maybe you need to get into the songs first, to then appreciate the performance aspect? but i get it if you're a choreo only supremacist, why she may not be for you.
yeah you don't really get the same crowd engagement on snl performances which is why they feel so low energy sometimes

I can't get into most of her songs but I do love "Femininomenon" and "Good Luck, Babe" is slowly growing on me!
HOT TO GO is still my favorite from her.
Those are the only ones i like
Pink pony club is the one for me 💘
My Kink is Karma!
I do agree with you though I would love to see more racial diversity in pop music right now amongst the new gen z artists!
she didnt vote for trump she voted for Kamala she just said she didnt want to endorse bc she wanted the candidates to be more trans rights and she has been a big advocate for Palestine which i think is fair it was an out of context interview i dont think its bad for this young generation to want more from their politicians unfortunatly the election results were what they were
HOW DO YOU KNOW ? She tell you that ?
Regarding the comment towards the paps, it was caught on camera when the paparazzi told her to shut up and thats why many people sided with her HOWEVER, there were even MORE people bothered by her speaking up for herself... it can be a race thing at times, but this isn't one of those times because of the backlash she received. Especially on Instagram
I’m gay and I’m a little monsters and don’t connect with her either so you are not alone haha
The situation is very simple, the generations of gay divas are different.I'm from Brazil, I took the LADY Gaga Katy Perry Beyoncé train, the Trinity, which will definitely arrive by the end of the century, firm and strong, except for Katy Perry, of course.

@@briefind the way Zach feels about Chappell is exactly how I feel about Tate.

@@nameisamineomg y’all missing out bad with Tate 😢, 2 HANDS is a hit babyyyyyyy
It’s the white woman energy. Gaga’s white but she doesn’t exude that in the same way. Katy Perry didn’t either but it’s coming out now hence her flop. Kesha owned it early on in her career with her white trash/party girl persona and made it fierce, and Brittany had a natural cool factor. With people like Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan, they just don’t have that natural cool factor, hence why they have the same appeal to the same type of people. But Chappell’s talented and I wish her the best!
That’s interesting honestly… but yeah
I strongly agree.
This is very well said, I agree
Kesha is really awesome!! We definitely sleeping on her
I feel like you don’t listen first, you just talk 😭
She def didn’t vote for him. If anything she was too far left for harris. But she’s def not for him
Pink pony club is such a cathartic song❤
As a white 🌈 myself, I know *exactly* the kind of gay you’re referring to. And what you say is tea, tbh.
personally i think shes very unique and a breath of fresh air for the pop girls. but some people arent for others, just bc shes not your taste doesnt mean anything negative abt you or her. my fav song of hers is Red Wine Supernova

I get it, sometimes you just don't click with an artist, even though they're talented.
I LOVE her music whyyyyy not
I can’t say I’m a fan of hers yet but I do think it is about finding the right song.
I honestly feel like one of the few gays that aren’t into her…I’ve been a lil monster since 2008 and it annoys me when people compare her to Gaga
You’re crazy for saying that she voted for Trump. She never did.

Yes!! ..You definitely need to get into The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess ..you won’t regret it🙂

She was proved right less than 48 hours after the election when Democrats started throwing trans people under the bus.
Chappel did get hate when she was being rude. Did you all miss that?😂
I tried SO HARD to not like Chappell (I hate following trends I'm just weird), but she was EVERYWHERE and I was captivated by her lyricism. She tells these unique stories that are also heavily influenced by real life experiences. Now I'm obsessed and there's no going back
1:17 you’re not alone 😂
“Maybe Im just bored” Same! Sorry!!
The controversy was about her not wanting to endorse either candidate because she hates Trump and the conservatives but she also has issues with the Democrats.
I was so confused but now I get it
5:05 you hit it right on the nail we saw in real time this year how people treated Kelly Rowland for being disrespected by that security guard👀
Hemlock Springs and that’s because that’s the only avenue that is pushed for black women in mainstream music
I don't really care for the new pop girlies but Chappell woke up something in me and made me like the genre again 🤫 she definitley brought something fresh to the table imo. It's a new sound while also giving old school vibes at the the same time, so I can appreciate how dynamic her music is 😌
