Maybe something to consider would be an oil centrifuge. I have the spinner 2 on my 3406B engine with over 2 million miles. You wouldn't believe how much that centrifuge catches. Also I agree using Cat filters everywhere on that engine. They have put tons of research and design into them. Great videos as always, thanks.

I don't have a cat, but hell yea I'd drain that oil sump. * Note to viewers: wire brush your drain plug and the area around it, also use a damn near spotless drain pan, reason: if any metal frags fall out of the drain plugs, you can sift in the drain pan and find the metal and easily identify what it may be, bearing, ring, gasket material? Great work, not many RUclips Mech. are aiming for precision and provide step by step maintenance. ...thanks EzRider

I wish mechanical shops took the same mechanical principles and ethical attitude that you use with equipment. The shop who rebuilt your out of frame CAT engine looks to have done a very nice job. Unfortunately you had to spend the amount that you did, but that's part of the way it goes. They appear you have done a great job not like other shops who charge astronomical dollars and don't care about the work they did.
Basic math that presents you're running a $5.00 a mile cost rebuild and every mile you make it comes down. Napa had great oil filters.
There are great RUclipsrs who outshine mechanical shops. Shout out to yourself. Marc at twinsticks. Peterbilt Mike and others who do great videos

I respect your system and it works great for you. I use 1 gallon Delvac oil because it’s easy to return to any auto parts place. They don’t always like accepting the 5 gal buckets. I would keep it around for a shop heater but I don’t have a shop. I get my oil for about $12 a gallon, $50 for Fleetguard filters and a tube of grease. I save quite a bit of money over time and get a close look under the truck every month.

  • @scottvaughan473

Man your good on that filter people love cat fuel filters because they have less microns which equals less restriction. Most of your aftermarket filter manufacturers are not gonna be less than what cat filters on Microns due to the fact of Lawsuits. We ran Cat fuel and Baldwin oil for years on our cat’s never had a problem. Baldwin will filter more. Believe it or not you will see a slight Oil pressure difference between the 2 depending on how good your gauge is. We do our services on the 10’s easy to remember that way. We all know how to count be 10.

    • @Ezrider359
      @Ezrider359  2 года назад

The lower the micron number the smaller the the particals it can catch. Meaning the smaller the holes the oil has to pass threw so more restriction. Although some of restriction can be offset in the filter design.

First time I pulled the drain plug on a C15, I missed the bucket cuz the oil always goes sideways...I liked to drive the front tires up on blocks (3 or 4 inches) gave me just a little more room underneath. Always punched a hole in the filter and pulled that front plug. I noticed that you started screwing the filter on off camera...I used to HATE trying to screw that filter full of oil back on...

    • @markm0000

Bruce a trick to get the oil filter back on and full of oil is to thread it on a few turns and pump oil into the filter while it’s on the engine. When the low spot just starts to creep up with oil you’re good to tighten it down.

Almost got an oil bath when pulling that filter out. That has to be the largest oil filter I have ever seen.
I would check with Caterpillar dealer to see what they recommend as an alternative when there’s a shortage of their parts. I think the pennies per mile analogy is the best argument for oem parts, especially when you are under warranty. The thing is the warranty is not necessarily with CAT and it appears this rebuild was by an aftermarket engine builder.
I do know first hand that CAT is short on everything right now.

This is a job that I absolutely hate with a passion. I put a quarter turn valve on the pan and hook a hose to it and have a electric pump to pump the oil into a barrel , makes it a much nicer job. Now the only mess is the filter removal.

I’ve seen someone with a hollow punch that has a thin hose out the side to empty out filters cleanly. I don’t know where to find one I’ve been looking for a while. I will end up making one someday.

They say Cat filters are the best but I don't know. And I never liked Rotella in a 3406, they always seem to burn the stuff as soon as you start using it and some engines burn a lot of it!
That B model is a great engine !
