I have Tongan blood in me. funny thing is that in Samoa we know of our history with Tonga and the wars but it was never taught to make us hate our brothers, but to learn the History of our people. It was not until I moved to the u.s. that I realized that whole rivalry and sadly conflicts due to gang politics mixed in. I remember as a kid during flag day when it came to boat races, Tonga always sent 2 boats-Tui Ha'apai and the Tui Vava'u with only one order from the king-Any one lose to the Samoan boats which were many, your rowing your ass home. Tonga never lost a race. Personally, I like to think that we are the exact same people and 1 group left to go south or north.
This technique was quite common in the pacific. I used to even see school teachers use this technique on disruptive students years ago. Sadly this ancient technique is now outlawed by the Palagi.
Palm strikes are taught at police academies -- local, state, & federal throughout the U.S. The palm strike is not only dangerous to the recipient, but it protects the delicate bones in the hand of the person performing the strike. I knew a cop with pins & screws in both of his hands. One night, while making an arrest, he ended up trading punches with a suspect, and he shattered both of his hands on the suspect's hard skull. Fiji and Tonga are really close history wise, king maafu conquered the lau islands and teamed up with Tui nayau (a fijian chief) to conquer the rest of fiji because different parts of Fiji had different kings,after the victory Tui nayau gifted him the island of vanua balavu where he lived and died and his grave is still there today.

I'm glad that Samoans and Tongans get along today. Well, for the most part here in the Bay Area, I can't say the same for SoCal since I don't live there. Crazy thing is, there's Samoans like myself with Tongan blood. My goodness...I get it's great that you cover SOME of the fighting techniques and sports of Western Polynesia, but there is a lot that has been totally missed. Maybe it's because once Island groups decided upon converting to Christianity then War Gods and Goddesses of old, and everthything included in thier worship and the culture around them was effectively erased. Only in Eastern Polynesia and it's subsequently discovered then populated Island groups do you see bits and pieces of this war culture. You also see the martial arts in the dances warriors used to do to keep fit, such as the kailao, 'ailao, taufakaniua, and meke, and tge certain weapons used such as the nifo'oti. In Hawai'i the Fenua Enana, Tahiti, Aotearoa, you see our ancient chants, haka/ha'a, hula, our weapons are very well known. We still celebrate Makahiki, when warfare was Kapu and people were allowed to be free and repopulate and procreate. The rest of the year was a free for all when it came to warfare. We had our own martial arts in Hawai'i, although a lot has been lost. Tukailimotu was our war God who humans were also sacrificed to. Maybe thats also the reason for the cessation of in fighting. Christianity forbids murder, cannibalism, and well obviously those two religions conflict. I also think there was no more need for war. Once the Tu'i Tonga solidified most of, if not all the power in the Groups, and surrounding Island groups, then there's actually no need to battle it out. I also must say this, no need to pretend as if Tongan and Samoans are so different from eachother when most of everyone is mixed and have ancestors from eachothers islands most Tongan and Samoans and Fijian I know have some ancestry from the neighboring Island groups, or an entry across Polynesia and the Greater Pacific. We should be proud to be ourselves, and work to collaborate to peace together what was lost.
I wouldn't say that any Polynesian group really "decided to convert to Christianity". What happened was that hordes of white people with guns, arrived on these islands, stole Native lands, and then, some time later, Christian missionaries arrived, and offered the Natives food, shelter, and other necessities, in exchange for them "accepting Christ" into their hearts & minds. It wasn't just Protestants who converted Native Polynesians, but also Mormons. It's very sad that these indigenous people essentially "had to give up their traditional beliefs", or risk dying destitute and homeless, due to the power & influence of foreign invaders, who turned them into beggars in their own ancestral lands.

The King of Tonga converted and then dedicated his whole island group and it's inhabitants to the Christian God and converted to avoid colonization by western powers in an act called tukufonua. Samoa saw the ships and technology if the Europeans and in a speech the paramount chief of that time basically posed this question: we worship our Gods with dedication and great labor, but what have they gotten us? But look at the visitors God they don't do as much but they have ships that can sail for years and carry hundreds of people and nails and guns! And in that act the people of Sāmoa changed religions. And fragments if the old religion still are around but it's not as in pre contact times. This is why in western Polynesia people are devoutly christian in those countries. It's was a bit more of a struggle in islands like Hawai'i because of the resistance to change. This is why certain island groups have different relationships with Christianity and western culture than others. It's also why certain island groups retain a lot of their culture or thier modern culture because they adapted. In Hawai'i the ancient culture still survived but a lot has been destroyed. The groups who fought the hardest were the ones who usually retained a lot of the ancient culture. So because western Polynesia has converted willingly artifacts from the old belief systems are very rare as they were destroyed by the people.

It wasn't just Protestants who converted Native Polynesians, but also Mormons. It's very sad that these indigenous people essentially "had to give up their traditional beliefs", or risk dying destitute and homeless, due to the power & influence of foreign invaders, who turned them into beggars in their own ancestral lands.
@@megamouthspike1930 except that wasn't the exact case in a few island groups. Samoa and Tonga are good examples. The King of Tonga converted and then dedicated his whole island group and it's inhabitants to the Christian God and converted to avoid colonization by western powers in an act called tukufonua. That's why there is a cross in the flag and the color is red signifying the blood of Christ. Samoa saw the ships and technology if the Europeans and in a speech the paramount chief of that time basically posed this question: we worship our Gods with dedication and great labor, but what have they gotten us? But look at the visitors God they don't do as much but they have ships that can sail for years and carry hundreds of people and nails and guns! And in that act the people of Sāmoa changed religions. And fragments if the old religion still are around but it's not as in pre contact times. This is why in western Polynesia people are devoutly christian in those countries. It's was a bit more of a struggle in islands like Hawai'i because of the resistance to change. This is why certain island groups have different relationships with Christianity and western culture than others. It's also why certain island groups retain a lot of their culture or thier modern culture because they adapted. In Hawai'i the ancient culture still survived but a lot has been destroyed. The groups who fought the hardest were the ones who usually retained a lot of the ancient culture. So because western Polynesia has converted willingly artifacts from the old belief systems are very rare as they were destroyed by the people.
