it is stupid as fuck because i want to make videos to just show them to my friends. Why should my videos be banned for using copyrighted music? I dont sell anything.
+Dim Tsant if ur doing it for ur friends and ur on PC change public to unlisted and then send the link to your friends and they can watch. only people you send the link to will be able to watch
@StarGaze TV no we don't.... I give credit to all the original, write out copyright disclaimers on all of them, and still get copyright claim, I had to use the radio edit version if songs bc if I don't it gets deleted
On other channel the music it works for them, but on my video’s it gets copyrighted so I think your supposed to have a license or something to use copyrighted videos.
@@maximus-sj4kv not really, the people are stupid. 2 things, either normal people don't get how to properly use or don't pay attention to the normal big forms. Or Creator just make it look good not work good.
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of Video Creators, Tim. I hope folks found the info helpful. Once I get back to my computer, I'll be sure to chime in on the comments section on YT.
***** I'd imagine what Tim is driving at with the "one way" comment is that RUclips requires permission from copyright owners for us to use their material in transformative works. RUclips does not always enforce it, and yes, different countries handle copyrights differently (Many foreign countries don't have broad fair use exceptions, for example). But at the end of the day, the one sure fire way to keep your channel safe is to only use copyrighted material you have written permission to use.
Thanks so much! I actually wasn't able to monitize a video due to showing my face playing the game during it for Killzone using the PS3 Move rifle. Wonder is things have changed.
I wish RUclips could just have some kind of system which allows you to buy a song and use it in your video. That way, there system has a copy of the song file/digital copyright signature file. It would be so much better.
@@lelouchvikurogane1127 if you create music a Random company will claim it because money youtube gave WAYYY TOOO MUCH power to music companies that is why the copyright system is flaued
I hate the copyright system, it's so complicated. I wish we can just use any song that's copyrighted, and the system will automatically recognize the audio and it will give credit to the original owner.
Currently it works that way, the main problem came if you monetize those videos... if you don't, just get the copyright claim usually with no more issues, An alternative to avoid this you can use creative commons music or royalty free music. There are a lot of great musician who still in the dark and have excellent music you can use and allow you to monetize your videos.
Everything depends from the original song license by the artist, for example there are a lot of free from the source songs which only require attribution, you can find a lof of them in put channel. XoXo Kathy M.
Don't see why they won't let you play music if your channel isn't monetized. That's like saying I'm somehow taking credit for their music by playing it in my living room.
Exactly. If the channel playing other ppl's music is not monetized, I too don't see what the big deal is. So basically YT wants to play paid music and let you and I love it and listen to it FOR FREE. But if you try to do what YT is doing, but in your own living room, you're busted. Hmmm... sounds like something I learned in commerce class, called a Monopoly.
i uploaded 56 videos in my channel and i in all of them using Metal bands music, i get 3-4 videos blocked worldwide, my last was because i used Norwegian movie from 2017, its so frustrated, my channel is not monetize, but videos can't be played on RUclips even i try dispute .. nothing helps ...
I have one video with copyrighted music and I get: "Copyrighted content was found in your video. The claimant is allowing their content to be used in your RUclips video. However, ads might appear on it." I can't monetize the video but none of my videos are monetized. Sounds like the owner of the music get to choose if they want to monetize my video but the views are not that great so I don't care either way. The only thing was RUclips took it off for a while and then they put it back with that description so I can only tell you my experience and yours could be different with RUclips.
They almost always will, RUclips actually has a page where you can see if they will in exchange for claiming the video. This channel is aimed at people wanting to make money, where that would not be a good solution.
Disappointed... I knew this already but what are the chances of record labels or artists responding to your email? Let alone freakin' sending you signed letters with permission?! The copyright system is too complicated at times. Even fair use.
I get some of it. It's unfair to the artist to use for example a whole song and then people listening to it through a channel and the channel owner getting views and money. But what about only 5-10 seconds of it? Seriously?? That should be fine.
they shud just add something where you add the song through youtube, so that the person who owns that song makes like 10% of the monetization on that video or something.
Dear Slim, I wrote you but still ain't callin' I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin' Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
That's where youtube partnerships come in, and why so many creators are partners with some company. Partners like Machinima etc - already have deals with mainstream music creators/games and sort all the legal stuff out for you, so you just record and upload. still, you can't use all copyrighted music. If you're not partnered you have to get expressive permission from every game company etc yourself. Instead of your partner doing it. Which is why every youtuber is behind a partnership more or less - because it's way too much hassle for a person to do that.
Of course there's copyright - it's yours - giving people permission to use your music doesn't remove your copyright from it. The only true "non copyright music" is where it's quite ancient and in the public domain. Don't confuse "free to use" or "common creative licence" with "no copyright". People are confused enough.
David Frigault - you obviously have problems understanding words you use - and understanding copyright ownership SUCCESSORS (if the person had a succesor) would be unlikely to own copyright. Nor would the deceased's beneficiaries or executor be able to give permission if the one who'd died had assigned copyright to a publishing company.
You find his publishing company - whichever one owns the rights to the song you want to cover and ask them if you can have a license to put the cover on your youtube channel.
RUclips actually give a lot of information on this subject: - If there is a particular commercial song you would like to use, you will likely find the current permissions for that song by going to Creator Studio -> Create -> Music Policies, and search for the song or artist you would like to use. Generally, the vast majority of recordings allow you to use them, so long as the video is NOT monetized, and the copyright holder may place ads on your video to gather revenue. There may also be the option to record a cover of the song, which will likely result in a shared revenue scheme. A few recording are totally blocked, but these are in the minority. Be aware that the copyright holders have the right to change these permissions at any time in the future, but this is a good place to look. - If you want music to use in your monetized video, go to your account -> Creator Studio -> Create -> Audio Library , and you will find a fairly sizable list of music you can use. - If you want to use copyrighted music, in a monetized video, the only legal way is to buy a mechanical license for the 'phonorecording' (the legal term for any copyright recording) of the track you want to use.
To be fair, it's not RUclips at all. I tried to livestream some Beat Saber play on Facebook, having no clue that they can and will shut down livestreams for copyright infringement, but they did. Copyright law issues come up pretty regularly as technology updates. People in the music & movie industries (and lots of other fields for that matter) want to protect what they created and make sure other people aren't making bank on their work. I can't really blame them. I feel ya though, it's tough if you just want music you enjoy in your vlog or to stream a liveplay of a game.
This is too complicated. I just want my 4yo brother to sing Marry you by Bruno Mars with the actual song in the back so he doesn’t forget the lyrics :(
I hate copyright laws so freaking much. Most youtube videos actually HELP these companies make even more money. They are literally punishing free advertisers.
I don't understand. You see all these big RUclipsrs using copyrighted songs and even clips from movies in their videos. How do they get away with it and monetise their vidoe?
iluvgtasan I don't know how their all getting away with it but I don't monetize my videos and some clips I have posted of tv shows, the copyright holders just attached ads to them which was nice that they let me use them that way. The thing is, I didn't know which ones would do that and which ones wouldn't and have gotten into trouble by holders that just didn't want me using it at all and didn't know until after I uploaded them which would have copyright strikes on them. I think I've had two. Don't want any more of them.
Tbh, them replying wouldn't be the problem, the problem would be convincing them to give you permission. Metallica is butt and you gotta put in a lot of work because the copyright is =strong with them.
Not really mate. Let's say you create a song. I then use your song for my video. I give you the credit in my description box that it belongs to you. However, even though you created the original song video itself and even though I clearly told people that you are the creator of the song, for some reason all the people seem to flock to MY identical copy of your song in my video as opposed to yours. Let's say I get 3 million views as a result of including your song, and you only get 10,000 views or whatever for that same song that I took from you. So what was the point of me saying that the song originally belongs to you if now people associate the song with me. It would be horribly unfair on your part; as I basically took away all your glory. See?
This Is Not Even My Final Form come on, don't be such a smartass. You know what I meant, I wanted to make the "view comparison" obvious... fine... make that 200k then instead of 10k... the point still is the same... it's still stealing.
Jinigosoti Game-Clips And arent you aloud to use remixes of their song? and put credit ? noo when I do that for Work from HOme song...they blocked every single one of them. The Greed.
@@deltaf1zzyy You're only confused because this video doesn't explain copyright well at all. Look up better vidoes on how to use copyrighted content legally.
The whole copyright system is broken. People just want flow for their content. Most non copyright music is garbage. How is there not a company or middle man that works with these big artists or labels to provide music for the people at a small fee or low monthly cost. I'm tired of slowing down the speed of music to 97% on social media platforms.
+Carl Johnson *_I KNOW..._* right...?! This is especially the case with music in the World Music genre; there's *_*SO*_* little of it that's not copyrighted there (i.e. traditional Kurdish folk music)!!! ** :(
It's still not legal, but depending on the copyright holder, they could just mark your video for a copyright match and monetize the video instead of you.
I just waisted three hours of my life with a unuploaded video that I already finished editing till I figured out I can’t just put who the song was made by. :)
if using a movie clip for example, you have to give credit. say you “I DONT OWN THE CLIPS USED IN THIS VIDEO” and then put the copyright section. if it’s music put “i don’t own the music in this video” and then put the artist, the song and their social medias. that way they won’t want to really copyright you.
as long as your video does not make a HUGE IMPACT and has has like less Views..they wont bother about it.. but when u make a Video(for EX: a meme with video song) and it has 10+ mill views and they think that u generate lot of ad revenues. they probably gonna copystrike u.
Biggest rules of this. 1. Always ask the artist's permission before using their song 2. Give the artist credit and always say you don't own this song 3. Don't copy other RUclipsrs 4. Create your own content 5. Using the owner's stuff without permission is ILLEGAL, don't do it 6. If you use someone else's stuff, give them credit at all times The owners do look at RUclips videos
dominique Jackson I want to use Steven universe music (don't judge they got some people who has good instrumentals) so what I can't just talk to Rebecca sugar or the owner of the Instrumentals on RUclips
San D.R.O just because their video is still visible doesn't mean they didn't receive a third party copyright notice which would allow the video to stay up but not make money off of EVEN though you see ads running on it which was applied by the claimant.
So a lot of the youtubers I watch use tons of copyrighted music clips in every single video and I doubt they get permissions for 100+ songs, so how are they able to get away with it? I mean, these are people who have 2 - 6 mill subscribers and get 2+ mill views on their videos and use TONS of copyrighted music. I imagine companies would take notice to this but they get away with it?
If you tweak the speed of a song a little bit RUclips can't pick up the song. I did that in one of my videos because Im sick of not being able to use the music I want, and you can't even tell that it's sped up
I did a little digging and basically because youtubers are using multiple clips of less than 10 seconds of audio, youtube can't track the copyrighted songs being used so that's why nothing happens. So unless the copyright holders themselves are checking and verifying this then people can get away with it. Using the entire song or a long portion ie: 30 seconds etc... can be tracked but 1 - 7 second clips of various songs throughout the video doesn't get picked up
Kayla Teets Check out RUclips's Audio Library and go to the 'Ad Supported' music. You'll see loads of popular copyrighted music that they allow you to use but each of them will have certain restrictions like they'll have ads playing that go to the copyright owner or it may be restricted in certain countries. It's a great way of getting around it and I reckon this is what a lot of people are now using - you can't monotise your videos using this but if you just need some background music and you want to use something popular, there's a whole load of music available.
How the hell am I suppose to contact tupac. one he is dead. and two even if he was alive dat nigga aint got time to answer if i can use 3 seconds of his song in my crappy gaming video.. lol
+HufftyPuffty Exactly. I wanted to use a 2 second sound clip from a movie of someone giggling in a gaming video and I think the company responsible for the film would see my email, laugh and delete it straight away. So I just didn't bother editing a sound at all, too much hassle. Plus, would a company really spend money sending out a letter from the USA to the UK saying that I have permission to use that 2 second sound clip to satisfy RUclips? I think not!
Me: *Singing A Non Copyrighted Song* Copyright System: *Copyright Notice* Me Again:*Use A Non Copyright Music* Copyright System: *Your Channel Is Demonitized*
Wow I heard big RUclipsrs say using under 30sec of music was okay ( and they still do) 🙄😩 I just got a strike on my channel and now I think I might have to private all of my videos (176) because I don't want another one 😑. I would die if I got my channel taken away for something so stupid! Thanks for this video
+Missphotogenic Baby Not really sure how but, big RUclipsrs some how get away with murder while the little guys get strikes everytime. I'm going to follow the rules I guess.
So how is it that there are thousands of RUclips channels playing almost every song that’s ever been recorded? And those channels are still going strong Can I play copyrighted music without monetizing?
I have created my own music beat for beat grove for grove in groove maker, only to have someone else steal the music and claim their own copy right against my music.
onemon22 Dispute it, find proof they stole it, and bring them to court. If they're doing an actual copyright fraud, the consequences will make sure they never do it again.
I started creating my own beats/songs using apps and as I'm slightly making videos I sneak my beats in as the background music. I keep all of the original files and the parts of the music just in case if someone ever tries to claim it as theirs I have proof I did it. You should make a video showing you have the original files so your viewers can be aware of
onemon22 If you create music all you have to do is register it with ASCAP or BMI before you use it in your video and thats the only real way to be safe. You have to register it first to prove its yours. Thats exactly what Im going to do. Im already with ASCAP as a songwriter.
smart girl.....i think the same way....with some of the lawsuits that I have read about regarding CR its like people can destroy your entire life through financial means just for using the smallest thing.....its crazy
Protip: According to the US Copyright Office, any work published before 1978 that DOES NOT include a copyright notice (for example, on the front or back of the record sleeve) is no longer copyrighted. Period. As long as you're willing to use older music and do your due diligence checking its copyright status, there's all sorts of stuff you can use. If you don't believe me, look it up. They have a whole brochure about this which they helpfully offer as a pdf on their website. You're welcome.
How can I legally use copyrighted music on RUclips? When you get a third party content claim RUclips suggest you do one of the following: Acknowledge it. If you don’t mind the ads, you don’t have to do anything. Remove or swap the music. Share revenue. If you’re a partner you can share revenues for song covers. Dispute the claim if you believe you have the right to use the music. The best option is to secure the permission of the copyright owner to use their music on RUclips and to have the owner retract the claim. This may be free (as with Creative Commons or Public Domain music) or you may need to pay a licensing fee. Getting the permission (or the license) may be easy or hard depending on what kind of music you’d like to use. If you are after a popular commercial song this usually involves getting in touch with the publisher and working out a deal. As you can imagine, the licensing fees in this case may be quite substantial.
can you just say in the description like "i don't own this music in this video all rights go to owners" or something?? please help?? this is too confusing....
I just try to avoid copyrighted music. I use no copyright music. You can find some at this website called Bensound. I ussually give credit like you said, just in case.
***** You never know what a copyright owner will or will not care about. The point is that legally, whatever you do, unless you have permission from the copyright owner or it comes under fair use (which is a rocky boat) then it's still illegal
***** Sigh. Just because people do it all the time doesn't make it legal or right or okay. With music people are much more likely to use the kind of people's work who can find out and are going to care, hence why people get copyright strike. Just because you can get away with something doesn't mean you should.
This is click bait for most of the people who clicked this video. Most of the people who clicked this video clicked it because they wanted to know how to legally use copyrighted music on their channel and this dude just said " I recommend you don't do it" and then talks about how to use copyrighted games and movies which most people don't care about. If that's all you had to say for music then why did you put it in the title?
Yup, I read that EA can take your video down if you use their music (not sure if that's what you were playing.) Crap I guess all of us have to make our own crap. Unless we have millions of dollars sitting in our bank account for copyright.
Your tips really helped me get views and things on my channel. It's quite a new channel but I am planning to go all in with this and you've been a great help man thank you so much.
This answer to using copyrighted music etc just makes you understand why most people will not use copyrighted material or as the majority do, just ignore copyright altogether. Lets face it most people have no idea what the laws are until they have broken them and are punished. If you are unsure just don't copy anyone's material, the best you can do is create your own and probably more fun too.
Also, as it would take many lifetime's to bring to justice all the millions of people that must have broken the copyright law how can it be regarded as a law at all. Unless a law is enforceable within a reasonable period of time I don't know how it can be regarded as a law. For laws to work they must be enforceable and enforceable within a set time frame else bias and prejudice becomes the norm, some may be punished but many will go unpunished which is of course unfair and make the law unfair.
Do you think watchmojo.com ask permission to every video clipe they use?!?! and how about PewDiePie he uses lot of others music, does he ask permission from everybody too??
***** But i used music from youtubes library and then i wasnt able to monetize my video, or do i have to join other network, other than standard youtube.
Please, stop telling people things that can get them prosecuted. Fair Use is not a license to use material in any way, period. It is an admission of guilt with a supporting claim of Good Faith. In other words, it is an acknowledgement that you Knowingly Violated Their Copyright, but that you weren't doing so for nefarious purposes, so you hope they won't have you prosecuted for it. It is not a freedom to do something, it is a legal form of begging the copyright holder not to do anything about it.
Pretty useless video. Is pretty much impossible for regular, small creators, to get permission of a copyright holder to use songs or whatever. Our only way is to appeal for Fair Use, and only if it's correctly used.
@@yesuwu8530 Yeah, sure. Million dollar companies will let you use their properties for nothing. You now licensing exist, right? They will charge you even for breathing if they can.
Copyright is sth every piece of music has whether it's Creative Commons or liscenced, but I see what u wanna say. Pewdiepie n Guys jus size i believe can get personal permission, but all the small and mid sized channels... Dunno Thing is that they probably just don't hunt copyright abuse that strict anymore
That gives me hope, but do u use popular music and then monetize it? Because if I give up the monetization rights then I can use certain songs. Not sure though if I like that...
+Benno Six I think that big youtubers like Pewdiepie just end up buying licences for the songs they use. I wish that licences would have been talked about in this video, because they're an option too, although I don't really know how they work very well.
All I see is that there are BILLIONS of ppl only use art pieces and music from others and NONE OF THE CONTENTS are originated from their own. They call it music video ,tribute or whatever, and they're not blocked. I'm sure that these ppl did none of those things in your video
SheepPharaoh That's exactly what I'm talking about. These guys just stuff those things in a video, having no creativity, and didn't even mention their owners and their still not blocked.
Can someone please explain why/how a video I made gets muted by YT for copyright music when there are several other youtube users that before me have the same song in their video and their video has not been muted. They didn't post any permission with the video or anything different that I did as far as I can see. If anyone could explain this I would much appreciate it. Thanks.
***** The '30 second rule' is a myth. If you want to avoid YT detecting the use of a copyrighted song in a video you can shift the tuning of the song up or down a couple of semi-tones. You will need some sort of audio manipulating software for this. I hope this helps. If you have any questions just ask!
My recommendation is: Just put some more speed on your song ;) i use to speed up my songs just a little bit and then add them to my videos. Never get a copyright varning from youtube then:)
8:00 min long video!!! Guys here. Go on RUclips and find the music you want to put in video. Turn it into a mp3 file. Put it in editing software. Render it. Publish on RUclips. Put in description that you don't own the music in the video. Don't monetize the video. Then you are done. Less then 1:00 to read the process.
Plenty of people don't monetise videos. That's the way it was for everyone until a few years ago. People used RUclips as a hobby - many of us still do. If you don't monetise and infringe anyone's copyright they can choose to either "cause trouble for you" or monetise your video for themselves. They make that decision even before you infringe their copyright.
Step 1: determine the copyright owner Step 2: check for existing terms of use Step 3: find copyright owner contact info Step 4: contact the copyright owner Step 5: follow up with copyright owners
Yeah me too! I would love to fan animate music videos, or just animate with music, but a couple of others that have done it, apparently they do it for free and do not make money... Which kinda sucks, I imagined it would fall under fair use like making a remix- you're making something completely new...

If it's copyrighted music then vou definitely can't monetize it. It doesn't matter if it's accompanied by your own original video, animation, commentary or whatever. RUclips might leave it online and even put ads on it, but the revenue from those ads would go to the owner of the music. It also depends on the given musician/music publisher - Some may give you a permission to use their work for commercial purposes, but you would have to ask them first or at least look up online if they allow it.
The best way to get music for you projects is through indy artists. You can find them on RUclips, soundcloud, and other sites. Email the artists and ask them what it would take to be able to use their music. They are usually very supportive of getting their music out there. I have done this successfully with my reality show, Camp Chainsaw on my RUclips page. I also put a link for my soundcloud page in the video description so other artists can contact me for inclusion in future videos. If they dig your video, you may even get the artist sharing your work! Try it.
This did not help :( I made an 80s music compilation video that was blocked in its entirety. I dont understand.... these videos - full videos - came from RUclips and arent blocked. I even have them on playlists on my channel... AND there are other 80s compilation videos that aren't blocked, using clips from the same videos I used. I don't understand, very disheartening. Makes me want to just give it all up :( Am just a tiny little YT user and cant afford to buy licensing rights from all these people. How do others get their videos posted while mine is blocked??
ONLINE W/DYL - I wanted to click "Like" but I wish it had a "Boo" button.... so sad!! Wish there was a place we can post up vids other than our own computer!! Got things to share!! LOL FB wont let you either if you use copyrighted stuff. So sad. Sorry to hear about your video. Sounds like a lot of fun too!
Gonna REupload a new video BASED on the copyright hits... but gonna post it unlisted to see if it gets blocked... only have a laptop and movie maker so it takes FOREVER to put a video together.
Video Creators How does a site like Bad Lip Reading get all the videos it does. I understand Now... a lot of copyright holders would be glad to give them cuts... not Not at first. Every-time I see a good BLR video I wonder ... how did they get copyrights. When it comes to music their is a rule with "Mixtapes" that allows artists to use material (I think) but it is very specific.
Vintage Michael I'm not familiar with their process specifically, although they may fall under fair use, I'm not sure. Maybe they did reach out and acquire the necessary licenses. Maybe their network (Maker) has blanket licensing deals in place for their partners. Maybe they decided to take a risk and use the content illegally in hopes that the owners wouldn't take it down. There's several different options. I'm not sure which one they went with.
Vintage Michael Parody falls under Fair Use, as does commentary and critique. "A parody is a work that ridicules another, usually well-known work, by imitating it in a comic way. Judges understand that, by its nature, parody demands some taking from the original work being parodied. Unlike other forms of fair use, a fairly extensive use of the original work is permitted in a parody in order to “conjure up” the original." - (Stanford University Libraries)
#1 - No, you can't use copyrighted material if it stays below a certain time/quantity. Copyright applies in any case that the protected material can be recognized. So if you can recognize the song in 1 second of play, 1 second of play is protected the same as the full song. #2 - No, copyrights do not just expire after a period of time. If all owners of any part of the copyright have died, then a timer starts - but given that with Music, there is always a label/publisher/etc who owns some small part of it, and passes it on when they are purchased by other studios, and so forth, it pretty much just doesn't happen. (and in those rare instances it does, it is decades after every involved party is dead) #3 - Fair Use - is not a right to use, or a license to use, copyrighted material. It is literally a plea for the copyright holder not to prosecute you - stating that you Acknowledge that you are Violating Their Copyright, but have no nefarious purposes in mind while doing so, so you hope they will let it slide.
Tyler Hanson Roger Hodgson has some sort of axe to grind with anyone touching Supertramp stuff. I got a copyright strike for making a piano tutorial of a Supertramp song, so I sent him an email asking them politely to remove the strike and if the video offends them, when my account is restored I will delete it. I received a very arsey legal reply telling me I had infringed their copyright and they take it very seriously. At that point I thought, screw him, it's just a tutorial so I challenged it and won and my video was restored
There are RUclipsrs who have posted full feature length Star Wars films with only a few edits and you expect me to believe they got permission from Lucas Films to do it, and I post a short video with our national anthem as the music and I get a copyright strike? Bull$#1t! There is some kind of privileged system going on here. If Fair Use is going to be selectively ignored by copyright holders then they can be called out for violating Fair Use and then boycotted.
yes I agree. I found many videos with full screen mode, not much edit & just upload on youtube but got no copyright. (I watch their video & found some ads on it). but i try to upload some little cutscene of naruto & I got copyright penalty 1 month. I think They should have done something in their videos that prevent copyright content.
Yeah, I have found the full length movie Dragon Ball Z Battle of the Gods on RUclips, in HD with no visual edits, but the guy slightly altered and remixed the soundtrack and now it's fair use to upload that whole movie and make money off of it? The RUclips Copyright System is really broken AF, and that's especially been an issues this year, and RUclips does nothing about it.
i think the myth is true.....cause i sometimes use copyright n never get any strikes if it's under 30 sec......n once one song went 31 sec, it got strike...
I have been able to. They will send me a notice telling me it's copywritted and that I cannot monetize it and some countries or platforms may not be able to view it, but I can still keep it up.
Camermon. You can't use copyrighted music without the consent of the copyright owners, even if you don't monetize the video. It's technically illegal, however no one's going to go after you- except for RUclips. Like this video mentioned, there are ways to find out who owns the copyrights but 9 times out of 10 there are more than one copyright owner. The reason why some people can get away with using copyrighted music in their videos is because of the agreement the original copyright owner(s) have with RUclipss Content ID system. Because the copyright owner(s) and the labels know that people are going to use their music illegally not matter what they do, they obviously want to make money off of it. So a lot of copyright owner(s) are jumping on the bandwagon and allowing their music to be used on RUclips, however there will be an ad that will appear on your video. To which RUclips will take a cut of the profits, the copyright owner(s) will take a cut of the profits, and I do believe you will get a percentage as well. And then there are the copyright owners who tell RUclips and their Content ID system to immediately remove the audio, or even video, from that channel. Thats why sometimes a video you uploaded will get deleted in seconds. Unfortunately there is no way at this time to find out which songs you can use in your videos, so it's best just to stay clear of that. If you get flagged three times for copyright infringement RUclips will remove your account. Their content ID system is pretty much the only way RUclips can really monitor the illegal use of copyrighted material, and to remove the liability from themselves. It's a pretty complicated process just to use one song, so my suggestion would be to use the music that RUclips provides or any royalty free music!
***** I want to make lyrics videos of music that has been released on RUclips by the artist as music video or audio. Is there a way to use their music without copyright problems? Can I change the audio? I always see songs with the audio pitched. I've already a second channel in case it could get removed or they could delete my account.
Vanessa Leighton Depends on the song. RUclips has recently made it available for creators to be able to see which copyright holders, registered with RUclips's Content ID System, will allow their songs to be posted on RUclips without copyright issues (ads will in return appear on the video). If you go to creator studio > create > audio library, there are three tabs at the top. 1) free music 2) ad supported music and 3) sound effects. The ad supported music is the music released under copyright however the copyright holder will allow creators to use it by putting ads before the video and taking 100% of the net revenue. Just search the songs you want to do in there and see if they come up. If they do, then go for it! If you don't see it there, then you would have to get the permission from the copyright owner(s) to be able to publish their song on your channel. Now in regards to pitch changing, that doesn't always necessarily work. There are several key aspects of a song that RUclipss Content ID System looks at, so that wouldn't be a viable alternative. I hope that helped a bit! If not just let me know and I'll try to explain it better haha :)
I make "Lets Play" videos and I published a Fallout 4 video with the Diamond City Radio in the background and got in trouble....but I worked it out later on. I just thought it was weird because the whole radio thing is part of the game. Thanks for this video!

It's considered playing a copyrighted song onto a game. Let's say a game includes a copyrighted song by a writer, if that song is heard then you will get a copyright strike.

Yea, that's true... however video edits would let u use the song, but u can't monetize

If you want to legally use copyrighted music, games, or movies in your RUclips videos, there's only one way to do it. This video will show you how.
Alloy 7 Video Yup, exactly. :)
Thanks so much! I actually wasn't able to monitize a video due to showing my face playing the game during it for Killzone using the PS3 Move rifle. Wonder is things have changed.
Do u know how to do SFM videos?
I wish RUclips could just have some kind of system which allows you to buy a song and use it in your video. That way, there system has a copy of the song file/digital copyright signature file. It would be so much better.
+Daniel Sadjadian that is a really good idea and way easier

I hate the copyright system, it's so complicated. I wish we can just use any song that's copyrighted, and the system will automatically recognize the audio and it will give credit to the original owner.
Currently it works that way, the main problem came if you monetize those videos... if you don't, just get the copyright claim usually with no more issues, An alternative to avoid this you can use creative commons music or royalty free music. There are a lot of great musician who still in the dark and have excellent music you can use and allow you to monetize your videos.
Credit usually isn't enough, maybe they want you to purchase a license

I have one video with copyrighted music and I get:
"Copyrighted content was found in your video.
The claimant is allowing their content to be used in your RUclips video. However, ads might appear on it."
I can't monetize the video but none of my videos are monetized.
This channel is aimed at people wanting to make money, where that would not be a good solution.
lmfao
Disappointed... I knew this already but what are the chances of record labels or artists responding to your email? Let alone freakin' sending you signed letters with permission?! The copyright system is too complicated at times. Even fair use.
I get some of it. It's unfair to the artist to use for example a whole song and then people listening to it through a channel and the channel owner getting views and money. But what about only 5-10 seconds of it? Seriously?? That should be fine.
That's like saying you don't mind being burgled - if they don't take very much.

I know right?
So how in the world do so many youtube content creators use mainstream music???
Exctly, I don't fkn understand it. :(
They get permission through the big youtube labels or companies.
Hey 1234567890sunshine what you think about my music on the channel !!! Let me know ~Thanks. It's free to use in youtube videos no copyright ...
How am I supposed to contact 2pac if he's dead!?
David Frigault - you obviously have problems understanding words you use - and understanding copyright ownership SUCCESSORS (if the person had a succesor) would be unlikely to own copyright. Nor would the deceased's beneficiaries or executor be able to give permission if the one who'd died had assigned copyright to a publishing company.

RUclips actually give a lot of information on this subject:
- If there is a particular commercial song you would like to use, you will likely find the current permissions for that song by going to Creator Studio -> Create -> Music Policies, and search for the song or artist you would like to use.

RUclips is the problem, not following fair use
fair use is a defense...... not a law

Fair use. Search it up. That's how YMS and IHE are able to make their movie reviews.
iluvgtasan I don't know how their all getting away with it but I don't monetize my videos and some clips I have posted of tv shows, the copyright holders just attached ads to them which was nice that they let me use them that way. The thing is, I didn't know which ones would do that and which ones wouldn't and have gotten into trouble by holders that just didn't want me using it at all and didn't know until after I uploaded them which would have copyright strikes on them. It's stupid. If you use a song it's free marketing for the creator. What's their problem I would love if someone would put my music in his video
San D.R.O just because their video is still visible doesn't mean they didn't receive a third party copyright notice which would allow the video to stay up but not make money off of EVEN though you see ads running on it which was applied by the claimant.
Might be considered fair use since it's transformative, because they're giving their commentary on it
So a lot of the youtubers I watch use tons of copyrighted music clips in every single video and I doubt they get permissions for 100+ songs, so how are they able to get away with it?
Kimberly Duran I've browsed the library before but my videos are monetized so I don't use those. Thanks though! :)

+CharlotteBut Popular RUclipsrs use a lot of copyrighted music.
+CharlotteBut They ask permission to use copyrighted music in their videos.
Tondipea How do they "ask"?
CharlotteBut they ask permission from those who owns the music like.
Tondipea I'm not sure about that...
I heard that 30 second thing too. I totally didn't believe it. I try not to post anything with CR on my vids just to be safe.
the 30s thing is not true. can still be reported and taken down.
Don't afraid to be safe make more than one channel 😂😂😂
In many cases already one second is enough to identify. But then there is a high error rate.
Anita Star i just 30 secs for my vids, sometimes even like 33 secs
smart girl.....i think the same way....with some of the lawsuits that I have read about regarding CR its like people can destroy your entire life through financial means just for using the smallest thing.....its crazy
You're welcome.
but what if they remastered it?
How can I legally use copyrighted music on RUclips?
When you get a third party content claim RUclips suggest you do one of the following:
Acknowledge it.
No. Saying you don't own it in no way gives you the right to use it.
***** You never know what a copyright owner will or will not care about. The point is that legally, whatever you do, unless you have permission from the copyright owner or it comes under fair use (which is a rocky boat) then it's still illegal
***** Yes but you can't just assume you can use somebody else's art because it could end up biting you in the arse
***** Sigh. Just because people do it all the time doesn't make it legal or right or okay. With music people are much more likely to use the kind of people's work who can find out and are going to care, hence why people get copyright strike. Just because you can get away with something doesn't mean you should.
Watch this channel get striked down because of this video
Tekonix right lol
10 months later it’s still here 🤔💀
why do popular youtubers like bethany mota always use copyrighted music? why do they not get in trouble?
HelloDemi I'm trying to figure that out too! I seriously don't understand why everyone else but them get into trouble.
GlamourBby14 same i really don't get it..
HelloDemi same! i want to know this!!!
they're youtube partners
but so am i and i don't have the rights..
This is click bait for most of the people who clicked this video. Most of the people who clicked this video clicked it because they wanted to know how to legally use copyrighted music on their channel and this dude just said " I recommend you don't do it" and then talks about how to use copyrighted games and movies which most people don't care about. If that's all you had to say for music then why did you put it in the title?
thanks
I saw a black guy in the thumbnail, and the the first thing I see in the video is a white guy
righttt me too
+ZBacoNZ how is that racist? He expected a different person in the video who ended up coming in later.
+Emma Foote how is that racist he expected a black person from a thumbnail
(im black,so called) I agree, this time....the guy looks black-e-dee black in the thumb...lol..kinda look like him though!
IKR! I once saw a delicious hamburger on a McDonald's billboard and then saw a shit sandwhich when I went inside...
i have a gaming channel and i got strikes for listening to music thats on the game
talk over the music or mute it where the music is played.
yeah a lot of games like gta 5 or wacth dogs use real music by famous artist
Like on the Sims 3 my Sim had the radio on and the music was copyrighted.
Hey dijon dotson what you think about my music on the channel !!! Let me know ~Thanks. It's free to use in youtube videos no copyright ...
Btw, if you sub me, I'll send 10+ subs back only if you commend below that you've done it :D
done :)
Orgil Learns Done!!
I’m sure 80% music RUclipsrs get pissed off when their video gets blocked worldwide
@@MrSolowTv
I don't think so....?? Try it I guess...
Do you think watchmojo.com ask permission to every video clipe they use?!?!
and how about PewDiePie he uses lot of others music, does he ask permission from everybody too??
+Urban Exploration Finland with Janne Flinck I think that Pewdiepie just ends up buying the licences of the songs he uses.
+MrBX5 He makes a lot but not that much.
His RUclips network pays for a lot of songs every network have their own library of music that you can use
***** But i used music from youtubes library and then i wasnt able to monetize my video, or do i have to join other network, other than standard youtube.
It depends on the song and the copyright also its a bot that does this so sometimes it could make mistakes
I don't understand why you didn't discuss "fair use". You can circumvent all of that if used properly.
What do you mean ? This video didn't even help me T-T
How do you go about doing that?
What about their business email?
@@yesuwu8530 Yeah, sure. Million dollar companies will let you use their properties for nothing. You now licensing exist, right? They will charge you even for breathing if they can.
thanks for the tips, but it`s depressing :(
i feel like so many people use popluar music and get away with it, but
what you say makes sense.
They got permission. OR MOSTLY BECAUSE ITS NOT COPYRIGHTED
Copyright is sth every piece of music has whether it's Creative Commons or liscenced, but I see what u wanna say.
Pewdiepie n Guys jus size i believe can get personal permission, but all the small and mid sized channels... Dunno
Thing is that they probably just don't hunt copyright abuse that strict anymore
Benno Six Copyright isnt so critical anymore now to be honest.
+SheepPharaoh Exactly! when it comes to these stuff, YouTUBE IS JUST UNFAIR BRO!!!!!!!! :D
Can someone please explain why/how a video I made gets muted by YT for copyright music when there are several other youtube users that before me have the same song in their video and their video has not been muted. They didn't post any permission with the video or anything different that I did as far as I can see. If anyone could explain this I would much appreciate it. Thanks.
I'm asking the same question :/
life is not fair and thats what i can say to u
billy Bob
i think she monetize her video and the others didn't
*****
The '30 second rule' is a myth. If you want to avoid YT detecting the use of a copyrighted song in a video you can shift the tuning of the song up or down a couple of semi-tones. You will need some sort of audio manipulating software for this.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions just ask!
PETE TRISH
great comment
*Article 13 has joined the chat*
My recommendation is: Just put some more speed on your song ;) i use to speed up my songs just a little bit and then add them to my videos. Never get a copyright varning from youtube then:)
o.O thanks
CupECat can i use like faded alan walker?
CupECat how did you gain so many subs? And how long did it take?

8:00 min long video!!! Guys here. Go on RUclips and find the music you want to put in video. Turn it into a mp3 file. Put it in editing software. Render it. Publish on RUclips. Put in description that you don't own the music in the video. Don't monetize the video. Then you are done. Less then 1:00 to read the process.
drakeanator That's what I thought was considered fine. Geez, people saying they get flagged is scary, some of that content is hard work.
1 word: NoCopyrightSounds...
Don't worry, I'm sure, after using 3 Copyrighted music, you'll probably get Terminated.
What? Isn't that what you want?
Besides, if you demonetize your channel/video, you wouldn't have any reason for making the videos...
Plenty of people don't monetise videos. That's the way it was for everyone until a few years ago. People used RUclips as a hobby - many of us still do. If you don't monetise and infringe anyone's copyright they can choose to either "cause trouble for you" or monetise your video for themselves. They make that decision even before you infringe their copyright.
just "DISCUSS" with the owners, dang gonna have long conversation with ED Shreen!
Step 1: determine the copyright owner
Step 2: check for existing terms of use
Step 3: find copyright owner contact info
Step 4: contact the copyright owner
Step 5: follow up with copyright owners
No no, doesn't count unless you take eight minutes to say that
What if I make an animation and put the song in the background? like an animated music video.
That's what I'm here for, too
m ø e me too T.T
Ve Ci
So if I were to use the song "stressed out" by TOP then they'd put ads on it and I'd be fine?
The best way to get music for you projects is through indy artists. You can find them on RUclips, soundcloud, and other sites. Email the artists and ask them what it would take to be able to use their music. They are usually very supportive of getting their music out there. I have done this successfully with my reality show, Camp Chainsaw on my RUclips page. I also put a link for my soundcloud page in the video description so other artists can contact me for inclusion in future videos. If they dig your video, you may even get the artist sharing your work! Try it.
***** Sorry about that. I meant independent when I said indy.
*****
He means indie as in independent btw nice advice!
Great advice man, this is what I was looking for! I will try it. Thank you so much
Diego Gutierrez You're welcome. Let me know if you find anything!
I'm an indie composer. If you guys need music, check out my channel and let me know :)
I just got copyrighted when the music is copyright free.
?
Same *UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*
Maybe you used something else in your video that is not copyright free
omg i wish copyright was never a thing , soooooo confusing
haha lol, me 2. So confused.
Nah copyright is necessary, otherwise people wouldn't be paid for their work
IzzyIsDizzy
How would you feel if you made something then someone steals it and you can't do squat? Copyright is important.
The worst case is if a company changes their name and therefor declares all licenses for invalid.
without it, people can claim your work
This did not help :( I made an 80s music compilation video that was blocked in its entirety.
BoogieShmoo My school did a lip dub that featured 80's music in December 2016 and it got taken down. We we're confused as well.
How did the unlisted video go? Did,you ever upload it?
Seiferboi if the RUclips algorithms detect that you're using copyright material after scanning your videos while you upload you're still screwed
I hate copyright it’s not like we’re claiming the music it’s so stupid
Agree
I literally had to delete SO MANY FRICKEN VIDEOS CUZ OF COPYRIGHT REEEEEEE
you keep using copyrighted music consistently.
Use NCS music go to NCS (No Copyright Songs) youtube channel
NCS got me copyrighted :(
No one is going to do this and hardly anyone big does... Talking about fair use would have been MUCH more useful.
+Ashley Dufault yeah he is a noob cause he neglected to talk about fair use which actually can justify snippets of other peoples music in your video
Baby Spine
I mean, it's cool to know, but this isn't the only legal way to use copyrighted content, haha.
haha I know right
+Baby Spine this was made in 2014
+Magnus Mayorga The DMCA laws were made in 1998.
I wish RUclips would just let youtubers to use music from anywhere without copyright
ItsAda copyright law doesn't work that way and sadly the system (at least in America) benefits these companies that own the music.
what if you don't monetize?
Monetized or not, it doesn't change the fact that you don't own the material and don't have the necessary permissions to use it.
Video Creators Sounds tricky
(and in those rare instances it does, it is decades after every involved party is dead)
#3 - Fair Use - is not a right to use, or a license to use, copyrighted material.
It is literally a plea for the copyright holder not to prosecute you - stating that you Acknowledge that you are Violating Their Copyright, but have no nefarious purposes in mind while doing so, so you hope they will let it slide.
I've found that using 80's or 90's copyrighted music gets your videos pulled off the fastest.
yeah, like Supertramp....
I know right, I can't believe how crazy they are over supertramp
There are RUclipsrs who have posted full feature length Star Wars films with only a few edits and you expect me to believe they got permission from Lucas Films to do it, and I post a short video with our national anthem as the music and I get a copyright strike? Bull$#1t! There is some kind of privileged system going on here. If Fair Use is going to be selectively ignored by copyright holders then they can be called out for violating Fair Use and then boycotted.
I think dat dey don't get a strike bcuz of d credits in d end of star wars. Srry for your strike man
THEY HAVE COPY RIGHT LICENCSE
yes I agree. I found many videos with full screen mode, not much edit & just upload on youtube but got no copyright. (I watch their video & found some ads on it).
but i try to upload some little cutscene of naruto & I got copyright penalty 1 month. I think They should have done something in their videos that prevent copyright content.
pretty sure they reverse something i remember seeing it somewhere
Yeah, I have found the full length movie Dragon Ball Z Battle of the Gods on RUclips, in HD with no visual edits, but the guy slightly altered and remixed the soundtrack and now it's fair use to upload that whole movie and make money off of it? The RUclips Copyright System is really broken AF, and that's especially been an issues this year, and RUclips does nothing about it.
i think the myth is true.....cause i sometimes use copyright n never get any strikes if it's under 30 sec......n once one song went 31 sec, it got strike...
learning to make your own music now seems more easy and obvious than this
Are you allowed to upload copyrighted songs if you don't monetize the video????
***** Thank you!

+Pip Girl I don't think you might get in trouble because the song is the game's content but I'm not sure
+Conner Miles I didn't get in trouble I just got a warning from RUclips saying that I am not in trouble yet but I can't monetize that video. :/

Man wish I knew about these stuff I'm trying to put some music in my gameplay and the only one I could get in my recent video was from RUclips. At least it didn't strike me for being an ad-free audio
It's considered playing a copyrighted song onto a game. Let's say a game includes a copyrighted song by a writer, if that song is heard then you will get a copyright strike.
How did you got out of that I uploaded a letsplay video of batman arkham knight and it had music that was in the game but it saysthat ots copyright music
Music is what makes videos really
What happens if you give full credit, link the official song, AND put the copyright law but you still get copyrighted?
Somehow it’s still copyrighted
Most of the time I find that it gets copyrighted as soon as it's uploaded. They don't even see if I've given the credit.
Tried doing a reaction to gods plan before I could finish editing the upload they blocked it! But I see everyone and their granny with a reaction video
All I need to know is how you add the Music credits to the description of the video, Simple Enough.
Actually no. That doesn't make legal to use the song.
