An interesting thing about CrossFit is that you CAN ask a CrossFitter what their snatch is. And C&J, and Back Squat, and Mile time and 2k row time, etc.. They probably won't be all that impressive to somebody that primarily does Oly Weightlifting or whatever that sport is. But it means a CrossFitter can often connect to and relate with ppl from so many disciplines. I'm pretty frequently having really good conversations with ppl from all sorts of fitness disciplines. A lot of the time learning from them. Seeing how I can apply the knowledge to what I do in CF.
Too bad that crossfitters can't fathom someone enjoying sports some other way and always pull their cult recruitment bs. Might include small traces of sarcasm...
I’m very obsessed with movement quality, and I kinda struggle to participate in class with people who are competitive that don’t hold themselves to the same movement standards as I do. At the end of the day, I know I have to stay in my lane, and I use it all as a way to fuel my workouts. Today we did Cindy, and the dude next to me didn’t squat to depth, touch the floor or extend his elbows during the pushups, or even extend his elbows at the bottom of the pull-up. Probably didn’t even get his chin to the bar. Can you imagine how good it felt to beat him by over a round? Shave reps all day, idgaf. That shit makes it allllll worth it 😂
Hearing that the pres out rule is inconsequential caught my interest. I've always seen the rule as that one annoying sibling or family member. It's just there to sour the mood. I'm glad to hear the press out to a jerk isn't the be-all, end-all to my progress.
With all the short format content that's mainstream I'm really enjoying the longer format and more relaxed videos. Something to wind down to at the end of a long day.
At 21:20 Dylan feeling 145 lbs heavy on his back and crunchy knees, and then at 21:40 Zack feeling knees at 165 lbs., I'm glad to see you're both human and it's not just me that feels like that! 😆
You’re talking about gym culture here. The culture is set at the top and travels downstream, like in the Army. If the leadership doesn’t accept BS and has that integrity then the company/gym will have that culture. Call “No Reps” in a gym! Rep shavers in metcons, depth or lockout in the power lifts. Great convo, thanks for the episode.
I ran the cal poly deadlift program (3x20 touch n gos) and my back strength exploded. The touch n go turns it into more of an RDL and top of my pulls felt extremely strong.
I would love to see a reaction video to Olivia Reeves latest competition lifts and developments. You mention a bit in this video but the last competition was crazy
I started with CrossFit and I did it for about 3 to 4 years. I will say you will not get any better at weightlifting that’s where I wanted to improve the most and my strength. I no longer do it anymore and I’m lifting full time. CrossFit does NOT teach the snatch correctly well most CrossFit gyms. I didn’t really learn how to snatch properly until I got an actual oly coach that knew the ends and outs of it. My legs, hamstrings, lats, core, etc have been stronger than they have ever been! I will Not be going back to CrossFit.
Crossfit doesn't suck at all, people suck. Crossfit's methodology is good if you want to be fit. It starts to suck when people practice that methodology and make a competition out of everything.
@@shorecasted9295 the CF methodology does not say that you should compete with others during training. The competing is reserved for the competitions only.
Most people I know in CrossFit don’t really care about who’s beating who. People have so many strengths in different areas. But I can see how if you like to compare and prove yourself to others (outside live competition) it must be really frustrating. It’s definitely an easy sport to cheat in if you’re measuring yourself against others in an unjudged environment
What rack is that? I have low ceilings in the garage and need something to fit w/ an optional pull-up bar. Plus moving it in and out of the garage would be a plus.
@18:30 I think there’s something to be said that a smaller weightlifter, or, in many cases (not all-tranquilo) male and female lifters. While the smaller and/or female lifter may be able to snatch more than a larger/male lifter, it’s reasonable that the larger/male is actually stronger than the smaller/female lifter. When incorporating technique and widening the aperture for movement, the lift becomes more dependent on technique and less reliant on strength. Thoughts?
Now I want to get in my basement and squat. Pause squats! Ha, you guys scared Chris off. What was that about. Poor guy probably didn't know where the cameras were. Guess he's deep down a shy guy. Loved watching!! Thanks for the motivation! ❤
i need a group setting. my gym is mostly girls and let me tell you that is both motivating and terrifying. i'm 41 and 275 and i am that guy finishing 24.1 for no reason lol
Spoke in the wheel of fitness. Should be utilized in a balanced manner. BB, Oly, CF, cals, PL, running, cycling, rowing, all spokes in the wheel. Unless you are a specialized athlete, most are not.
Why the change in grip Zack? As someone who's body proportions are pretty similar (6'4", long femurs and long arms) I've always somewhat struggled with where I feel comfortable for my hands when doing backsquats. I kind of like a really wide grip and noticed you were and the start but when more narrow later. I don't have mobility issues for my shoulders in getting to a narrow spot.
Video number 5. Zack, what do you think of someone who has never trained in a gym trying to learn weightlifting to improve their overall athletic state, specifically their strength and explosive power for Judo?
The only time I have shaven reps. Is when my ego tells me to RX a cardio workout. Then as it progresses come to the realization that the pace is unsustainable and blowing up.
I've never done crossfit as I don't feel that my body mechanics are built for it. I'm not sure if I'm just bein naive, but I see crossfit amateurs and hobbyists seem to be in great shape.
Once you learn/realize someone is a rep shaver, their performance becomes completely irrelevant to yours, but agree that before you realize "oh, we started at the same point, and did the same pace, but somehow he switched at 49 and not 50 reps", it sucks. But it only takes catching them once. And sometimes people are just oblivious or can't count, but it's very obvious who the actual shavers are, they are the ones when no one is challenging them, they seem to have actual reps, but when someone is in class with them that is comparable, they suddenly "can't count right". In our box (very "family-friendly/oriented" not a lot of "bro-stuff" going on, although a little good-natured stuff of course), we have a few that sometimes are finishing a cycle at the same time as someone else, but clearly cycling the moves at a slower rate... we often pre-discuss round times "you should complete the 10 snatches in 1:15 or less" for example... if I'm the one barely getting to 10 snatches in 1:15 (that's optimistic, LOL)... and the guy who is clearly cycling slower than me, switches at the same time as I do, I'm totally fine with that, because if the stimulus says 1:15, I don't care about their rep count even if they claim it "wrong", they are still hitting the intended stimulus if that's the guidance. It only takes about 3 workouts with someone to know they are rep shavers and/or form cutters, which we strongly dissuade (try to cheat the movements more than a couple and a coach (including myself) is going to stop you and correct you. I wish Denise Thomas could come to every box in the nation for both accountability and coaching tips, saw her here in Ft. Worth a little while back and it was truly inspirational.

This is unintentionally such a great video. Full of life advice and chill moments.
